Plastic is a particular problem in polluting agriculture landscapes in Africa. Plastic pollution is a major threat to food systems both terrestrial and marine based food systems; plastic pollution is a threat to human health - exposure to plastic can lead to cancer, reproductive problems, and developmental disorders. Organizations such as AGRA have been working with partners in countries to promote sustainable farming. AGRA has demonstrated embracing management practices that that manage environment and social risks - like its Environment and Social Management System (ESMS), it is possible to control plastic pollution in agriculture landscapes ibn a just and inclusive manner.
As we all garner our efforts in the next 7 years towards attaining the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), maintaining climate warming to 1.5 degrees, limiting biodiversity loss and other social-economic development targets, we need to push for a Zero Plastic Pollution Africa (Net Zero-Plastic Africa). By taking these steps, we can help to protect smallholder landscapes and ensure a sustainable future for Africa. It is possible and the time to start is now.
