Despite its name, Earth is probably the only planet in our solar system with an ocean. It is the fifth largest planet in the solar system and perhaps the only one that harbors life.
The seas and oceans of the earth, covering 70% of the surface, are home to a large amount of life. With an average depth of 4 km, they make up 97% of the water on the planet. In addition, they have some impressive terrain: the most extensive mountain range, the Mid-Ocean Reef, lies deep under the sea. A study carried out by the universities of Münster, Cambridge and Zurich Engineering has found that the ages of the planets are between 4,400 and 4,510 million years old. To date, five mass extinctions have been recorded on the planet. The first time happened 440 million years ago and the last time 65 million years ago. Michael Rampino, an Earth science expert at New York University, claims it takes the solar system about 30 million years to cross the plane of the Milky Way. The presence of the system could be one of the reasons why comet orbits are unstable, launching them towards the planet. To this, he adds a possibility that is less studied today: dark matter.
8.7 million species, one planet. The ecosystem on which humans depend for survival includes about 8.7 million species of plants and animals. This was at least confirmed by a study conducted by the University of Hawaii (USA) in 2011, which is said to be the most accurate to date. We only know 1.3 million of them. Unfortunately, WWF warns with its Living Planet report that since the 1970s only the world's vertebrate populations have shrunk by 60% due to global warming, the destruction of ecosystems and the anthropogenic biodiversity crisis. We have the capacity to care for and protect (and even discover) all those species that make our planet (almost) an inexhaustible source of life.
