I was on my lunch break when it hit - I managed to get under the table for the duration before we all evacuated. My strongest memory is a staff member returning briefly to make sure we were all ok before he went to his family - he had seen a building collapse on people around the corner. He just said “people are dead. People are dead.”
i was in school, i had just walked back into the classroom because our teacher didn’t like us leaving our shoes in the classroom if we took them off. the whole room shook, there was a guy in my class who i liked and he pulled me under the desks and told me it was going to be okay. my mums friend came to pick me up because my siblings were asleep and she didn’t want to wake them up and scare them. on the way out, the uncle of the boy who pulled me out grabbed my mums friends by her shoulders, and this man, who was one of the most laid back and chilled people i’ve ever nat, screamed in her face “there’s fucking dead people in town”
Wow so crazy seeing this footage. This quake was 10 years ago in 2 weeks and seeing where the city is now is incredible. The initial devastation was unreal and 185 lives were lost. Seeing the progress and the city continuously changing around me over the last 10 years has been amazing. Many parts of the suburbs (including my first home) are unable to be built on again but the city is starting to become just as popular as it one was. So proud to be a Cantabrian and to have lived - and over come this earthquake. (I was 11 when this happened, didn't have much recollection of the central city before the quake, apart from photos and footage like this, but remember the quake vividly as you would)

It's especially incredible to see the change as someone who was there at the time but has since moved away. Every time I go back to visit family and friends it is a dramatic step change.

Its nearly been 10 years and the memories are left everywhere in Christchurch. I live in nelson and just bring inside a building during kaikoura earthquake was frightening let alone what there people suffered. And to think any moment one could happen, God hope the hospital still standing
Unfortunately my moms friend died in this earthquake. I was only 4. Mason you’ll be missed so much. Me my mother and my auntie were meant to go to the doctor that day for a check up but an Angel, mason canceled it for no reason. Sadly the building she was in collapsed and she died. Rip to all who died 🕊
My bestfriend was in this. She was going to go to lunch with her nanna on that day but it had to be cancelled for a seperate reason. The building they were gonna eat lunch in collapsed, I think most people dying. I'm so grateful she's okay. That is the 2nd earthquake she's been through.
Throwback. I was in school when this happened, we were lucky to have hardly sustained any damage near me whereas my parents were at my aunties funeral in Sumner, they were lucky they didnt get hurt.

I remember this quake. I live in Dunedin, south of Christchurch. I was talking to a friend on the phone when the quake hit. I said to her, as I clung to the table under which I'd gone, that people were dying in this one, it was too strong not to be deadly. I hated being right. I still do. It's a day I won't forget, ever. 22 Feb 2011. Christchurch changed forever that day, as did the lives of many New Zealanders. Visiting a friend in one of the worst-hit areas a few months later, I got to experience one of the smaller tremors - the sheer terror in her eyes still haunts me - she'd been trapped in a collapsed building that day and every shake brought back the panic and horror of her situation. It was a dark day.
That fear never leaves you. People who've never experienced a large quake can't quantify what it does to your emotions. And yes, all it takes is a little tease of a tremor and you're there again 😦
+Liz G And yet *amazingly,* no one died as a direct result of damage or building collapse during the Kaikoura 7.8M quake. Sadly two people passed away from shock or heart attacks, but it could have certainly been far worse. Definitely a blessing, considering that was the one where I could've sworn many would perish... And I was in Palmerston North at the time.

It ruptured *21 fault lines and set a world record* in a seemingly impossible series of events and geological failures that were ridiculously complex and previously unheard of. I have a feeling that it wasn't as (or more) deadly for 2 temporal reasons. 1) It occured near midnight, whereas Chch happened during a bustling lunch hour. 2) Due to the Chch and Seddon quakes happening first, all the buildings that were weakened and primed to fall, *already did.* Survival of the fittest, most architecturally sound. A process of elimination. If it happened first, Lord only knows it's likely many buildings that were gradually erased or demolished down the line would've collapsed at once, and the final death toll would've well exceeded 185. And who's to say that the Darfield, Seddon and Lake Grassmere faults that were behind the _7.1 M, 6.5 M and 6.6 M Canterbury and Seddon quakes, respectively,_ wouldn't have been part of the sum total that ruptured during the event, too? I was there, had literally left the city center 5-10 mins prior & sitting on bus going down riccarton rd. Had no clue my choice to head hornby warehouse instead of south city possibly saved my life, didnt end up going to warehouse obviously
Crazy I was in Riccarton McDonalds when it hit so you were probably right outside. The sound of stuff breaking and all the little kids screaming was terrifying!!

I'd been in NZ 5 days when this happened. Was in the city centre sorting immigration stuff and didn't know what was going on. Thought jet lag had hit me badly at first. Never thought I'd experience something like this.

I was there for all the quakes. Most out of it one was the first one, waking up to that then going outside and seeing the earthquake lights. Feb was short amd violent.
That 1st one 4 Sept 2010 was so scary for me too, it felt like it was never going to stop. I was alone that night and so terrified and still after tens of thousands aftershocks the fear is still as raw as that night.
