Earthquake Intensity Comparison - 3D Apartment Simulation (Southern California)

This video contains 8 realistic earthquake simulations of different intensities (from 3 to 10). Scientists use the Mercalli scale in order to describe how strong the shaking was perceived during an earthquake in a particular area. The upper intensities of 8, 9 and 10 are usually associated with earthquakes that exceed a magnitude of 7 on the Richter scale.
Have you ever experienced an earthquake? What was the maximum intensity you've felt? I have experienced an intensity of 5 while visiting the Big Island of Hawaii back in 2020.
Let me know what you'd love to see in my next simulations!

This video simulation was created in Blender 3D with the Bullet Constraints Builder (BCB - a structural simulation software) which extends Blender´s basic physics functionality with a sophisticated toolset to simulate load dynamics in building structures. It establishes constraining connections between rigid bodies that incorporate real world behavior and parameters. It has been developed at the Laurea University of Applied Sciences in Finland within the scope of EU Inachus FP7 Project (607522).

The other thing is that really intense earthquakes can last so long. The 2011 Japan earthquake was a IX (second to last on this scale), so already devastating and terrifying, but it lasted for SIX MINUTES.
@Batigol99
@Batigol99 Год назад
6 minutes is insane. I survived the 2006 Yogyakarta earthquake, it also has IX scale but last 57 sec. It was so terrifying that our house is collapse, and more of 5000 people lost their lives. Can't imagine how it feel 6 minutes earthquake.

When I first moved to California I knew eventually I'd deal with quakes. The first one was 4 months after I got here, the Coalinga quake was a magnitude 8 and did some damage here in Fresno. The San Francisco quake was the hardest I have felt, I was in Monterey at the time and it shook pretty good and was a 7.1. We also felt the Northridge quake in Fresno, it was just under a 7. There have been some lesser shakes, it's weird that my dog knows they're coming 30 seconds or so before they arrive and wants to get outside. It's a very specific behavior so I always go out with her.

Thank you so much for your feedback! Animals usually feel the P wave first which comes earlier depending how far you are from the epicenter and they are many times unnoticed by humans.

I am surprised that the stairs didn't go sooner, but being suspended, on the side, must have kept them, mostly, intact until the final one. It provided them a springiness that wouldn't have been there if they were open on both sides and rigid.
@EarthquakeSim
@EarthquakeSim Год назад
I was surprised too! For this simulation I decided that it would be more interesting to have a section of a house so that we can see better what is happening inside with the furniture and walls.
@masonthefish2006
@masonthefish2006 Год назад
The stairs are important too. They play a very important role in evacuating the building’s occupants. When the stairs get damaged the people on the top floors can no longer evacuate, and emergency crews cannot go up to rescue people.
