Tour Earthship Homes Under Construction in Colorado. These off grid homesteads focused on sustainability are all at different stages of development.
Earthships are a brand of passive solar earth shelter that is made of both natural and upcycled materials such as earth-packed tires, pioneered by architect Michael Reynolds. Many of these sustainable homes are fully off-grid while incorporating natural building practices and a greenhouse for growing food.
All of these land owners using this method of sustainable development attended the Earthship Academy near Taos, New Mexico.

10 years ago I saw Earthships off the Grid North of Taos... I’m all in not having a Mortgage or car payments. Will see what tomorrow brings.

Debra here....(of the Thomas and Debra duo featured in the first Earthship shown in Crestone!). Actually....not all of us attended Earthship Biotecture Academy in Taos, New Mexico; in fact Goldie attended Earthship Argentina with Tato Wacker, and the rest of us have learned from our partners, husbands, friends, books, videos and experience! One more important comment about Earthship construction: ANYONE can pound a tire! Michael Reynolds refers to 80-year old women in China pounding them with only their FEET. Love, Peace!

Ok, I got me some land in NE Nevada, off-grid property. I love the earth being used for energy. This awesome system is totally self sustaining, and I will stop looking at other options. garden fresh foods, recycled/reclaimed water systems. I am single so I don't need much. These Earthships are amazing. I will be in touch with you folks. Thanks for giving us an alternative method for living. I love every thing about this project.

I hope to find a place people are going come see me, it's hard to figure out what the next step is for me, as I feel like I'm just stuck renting and working, I do car shows and road trips for video hobbies keeping me busy so far... but not building a home 🤔😢

Instead of using a sledgehammer to pound, the dirt in the tires try putting a flat plate on the end of a jackhammer

You'd need a 300-man crew and thousands of person-hours to construct one of these. No wonder they cost an arm and a leg if you try to buy one that's already constructed.

@Joe Maxwell Yes, they can be labor intensive. However, these land owners have found a way to make it work with limited funds and help from friends and volunteers.

I am an owner/builder. In the video my husband, Thomas, relates how we had Wwoofers in to help at the beginning (especially the tire pounding!), and have done most of the work ourselves since then. We are still in process, yet have NO BANK LOAN and it will be a beautiful work of art when finished! And all off grid, to boot!
