* This also includes footage from Sega Saturn, Sony Playstation, PC and Game Boy Advance.
* The Mega Drive version is the only version without a weapon select button.
* Now, I shouldn't say this but I will anyway - even if this whole thing is supposed to be fun, you wouldn't believe how much work it takes to record multiple longplays while making sure they sync pretty well, and then editing them together, editing the audio, adding icons etc.
* I'm open to feedback and suggestions: would it be better if the background around the video frames was total black, with minimal dark grey text for the systems, the audio etc.

Lots of "tender" and "funky" on the snes version. For some reason it seems to have been given the most care of any version. The background on the dog rescue is stunningly beautiful. Im pleased to see how well the genesis stacks up. These mid 90s titles showed how awesome audio and graphical content was possible on the 16 bit consoles.

If you're an 8 year old kid, you'll enjoy either version the same. The game took advantage of both systems in their own way. I had a Genesis and loved this game along with Sonic series and Street Fighter 2, but I eventually did get an SNES for Square's RPGs. No regrets here with having a Genesis first.

I can't believe that the 32 bit versions doesn't have the 3D effect of the crow's house and the dog's house in the Puppy Love stages!. The 16 bit versions have it.

It's amazing how in-sync you manage to play all the footage, as well as how you mix and match audio between games. Well done! On The Flyin' King, I NEVER take the bomb with me! It's much easier to leave the bomb at the start, clear out the entire level first, then go back for it, which is what the fast-travel rockets on the side are for. And I wished you showed how you can use the Barn Blaster on the final level (if you go the whole game without dying) to instantly beat Psy-Crow and skip having to race him.

Wait... what? I didnt know you could use the Barn Blaster to kill Psy Crow! Now I will have to test it. Luckily for me this game was just added to NSO SNES library.

Have to give it to the SNES on this one. Better visuals, textures and better backgrounds compared to the Genesis, but I will praise the latter on colors, it looks more vibrant.

People can even analize them technically to determine which one is more advanced, but the best is and will always be the one you played as a kid. I prefer the older ones, PSOne and Saturn are too diferent. I wish they would make a mobile version.

I love both the Genesis AND SNES versions!! ...'Cept it kinda sucks that there's no convenient weapon-switching button on Genesis. Also, I don't care what anyone says, the SNES soundtrack is beautiful, and I prefer the SNES (the one I grew up with) anyway as it has a background for Totally Forked! which is just black for Genesis, and, of course, weapon-switching button. Also, I just noticed the Gen is the only one in which in the last level Psycrow doesn't slow down when you hit him. LAME! ...And the only one that tops ALL of them is the Saturn port. Just look at that parallax scrolling on the water in the background of the first level!!!

The SNES version has more graphical detail than the Genesis / Megadrive version. Both versions are great and you aren't missing out on much if you play either of them.
@DJZeeJay
@DJZeeJay 5 лет назад
@YTCensorsMe Poop Im not referring to resolution. I was talking about the addition to details in stages etc.
@DJZeeJay
@DJZeeJay 5 лет назад
Well actually there are. Take the puppy saving mini game stage for example. Theres more detail and effects in the SNES version. Then the background in the stage where you have to take the cow around has more detail. Also the ISO 9000 stage has more background detail too. Same goes for the food stage. Theres more detail and scrolling in the SNES version
@DJZeeJay
@DJZeeJay 5 лет назад
@YTCensorsMe Poop Check the food stage again. The background is completely missing in the Genesis version in some sections, and if its there, it doesn't scroll like in the other versions. The SNES version has parallax scrolling going in the background. Heck even the final stage has more background detail in the SNES version. The genesis version is the inferior port here, in terms of graphical details, though thats not saying much considering they are all great ports whatever system you play it on. Just because the res is lower does not make it look like shit. By your (faulty) logic then you'd be calling every Genesis game superior because its got higher res, lolwut. The genesis was better in terms of resolution and clock speeds, while the SNES was better in handling graphical effects, colors and sound.

I don't think both versions are that enferior to each other, but if you have a close eye SNES does have some missing frames in only one instance, the rocks in Level 4 and the bottom of the grinder in stage 3 is missing, not sure why and also you get to cycle your weapons on SNES which is a win for me.

Wow, that's pretty crazy. Both have to make sacrifices to show off what they can do. The SNES is running at a lower resolution than the Genesis version but clearly can display more and as a result brighter colors, as well as the waterfall in the background of the first level. Genesis version is technically running in Stereo--if played on a model one Genesis--and sounds great! Plus the SNES has better transparency effects SEGA consoles seem to have always struggled with against the competition.

Unfortunately with only video comparison it doesn't show that Genesis version lack of switch weapon button. It really hard to beat on last level if you stumble upon the bubble gun. Meanwhile SNES able to swap weapon immediately, so no problem with Bubble Gun, and able to preserve the other decent weapons for later.

Seems like the Genesis version has been rushed out a bit too soon as it lacks some sound effects and also should have had an option for the already widely spread Genesis 6 buttons controller in order to have a button to switch weapon. Then Genesis version runs in higher resolution with sharper graphics but SNES version has more parallax layers in some instances. SNES seems to win this one but I have to dig both versions more to really tell. Also there are the 32-bit versions, the Sega Saturn one in particular which seems the best of all.
@FuriousTH
@FuriousTH 7 лет назад
There are some things in the PSX and Saturn version that I don't like, for example the Puppy Love Background and Lorenzen's Soil (Lorenzo's Soil in those versions), I still put the SNES version in first place because it was originally made by Shiny while the 32 bit versions was made by another programmers (Screaming Pink).

@aceshighdueceslow
@aceshighdueceslow 3 года назад
it's quite astounding how little polish the Genesis version has against the SNES version when it was the opposite for EWJ1. Though for the 32-bit versions I feel the only things they really have going for them is the Red Book soundtrack (and personally I'm not too fond of some of the tracks because I think Tallarico got a little too high on his own supply and went overboard) I mean, the continue signs in the PSX are just...they almost seem like placeholder graphics
@FuriousTH
@FuriousTH 7 лет назад
Finally I was waiting for this comparison, for me Earthworm Jim 2 plays better on the SNES, has more visuals, better control and improved soundtrack. The Genesis or MegaDrive lacks backgrounds sometimes (Forked and Flamin' Yawn) some tunes like Puppy Love sound too electronic than a real italian instrument, as well lacks parallax scrolling in some levels like Anything but Tangerines and Level Ate, the most annoying thing of the MD version is that you can't switch your weapon, you need obligatory waste the ammo of that weapon to use the normal one, unlike SNES that is totally easy to change it by just pressing a button, the good point of this version is the resolution that is more wider than the SNES. In conclusion Earthworm Jim 1 plays better on Genesis but Earthworm Jim 2 on SNES, like Mortal Kombat 1 that is better on Genesis but 2 is better on SNES.

@FuriousTH 7 лет назад
Woah chill out, I'm not trying to be a fanboy, I like more EWJ on Genesis but EWJ2 on SNES, yeah there's pros and cons but in other aspects the SNES still wins, Genesis lacks some sound effects and looks like a bit rushed out, so how do you explain the lack of the sounds and backgrounds? Other thing is that you're actually a Sega fanboy and you don't accept the win of EWJ2 on SNES this time, the PSX and Saturn looks like more based on the SNES more than the Genesis (See Jim Run, Run Jim Run for example). My verdict is still this: Earthworm Jim wins for Genesis. Earthworm Jim 2 wins for Super Nintendo. That's it.

@Fabrício Levi No Mega Drive o movimento da câmera não se ajusta bem com o personagem, deixando ele na frente, dando quase na mesma do Super Nintendo. Sobre o som, bom, as vozes eu tenho que adimitir que são bem abafadas mesmo. mas a música é quase a mesma. Por mim eu iria no Super Nintendo exatamente pois não tem realmente muita diferença do original, e ainda compensando pelos problemas com coisas novas. Bom, a versão de SEGA Saturn é a definitiva de qualquer jeito, mas meu PC não rodaria e não tenho o console, então... ;-;

Even though the PS1 and Saturn versions are the kings of EWJ2, I think we can all agree that they could've added a lot more to those 32 bit games. They should've had more levels and an automatic save system.

Hm... seems like PSX and Saturn kinda don't hold up well against the older MD or SNES versions. Older ones have better graphics in many areas even. Personally, I prefer the SNES, because out of all of these, I feel it has the best visuals with more background layers and improved color pallets. Really it seems like the SNES is a refined version of the MD. SNES with PSX music would be perfect. Gameplaywise, I feel Saturn/PSX tinkered with the level design too much and killed a lot of the fun. I feel maybe it was an attempt to make he game longer?

I feel like of the 16-bit EWJ games, Genesis got an objectively superior EWJ1 but SNES has an arguably-better 2. The colours, instrumentation (sorry but the FM just sounds basic/threadbare/weedy here), non-dithered transparency and additional background details make it seem like the SNES version was given more love this time around.

Are you sure the Saturn and PlayStation versions aren't the wrong way around, because you have that level with the spotlight effect and the Saturn version is transparent when the PlayStation version uses dithering to achieve the transparency, which is the exact opposite of what both of those consoles generally did.
@Ashitaka0815
@Ashitaka0815 3 года назад
It's a generally wrong assumption that the Saturn couldn't do transparencies, it's just that when both graphics chips combined their image, the transparent layers could be distorted. There are videos out there that explains that phenomenon in more detail, but that was in general the reason why the mesh option was used so often. But it doesn't mean the games generally HAD ti l to use it. Panzer Dragoon Zwei and Saga are some examples for great usage of even big screen filing transparency effects in some areas (like water) where in others they used mesh (radar and lightening)

One thing I know is that regardless of the version I've just never been a fan of Earthworm Jim's level layouts. I honestly think if they were a bit more linear the game would be much more satisfying to play and they'd also end up looking more like actual locations as opposed to a bunch of random shapes at times. You know, if they were laid out more like say Contra III or something like that.
@ccdmn1557

Earthworm Jim always had surreal locations since the first game, it's part of the charm imo. EWJ2 goes a bit overboard with gimmicky levels though (instead of platforming ones).

@@ccdmn1557 I'm a fan of many of the locations, just not the maze-like level layouts. I'd honestly rather they were a bit more linear so they felt more like actual places within that world rather than that obvious maze-like "gamey" kind of level design. If they levels in the game were laid out more like say Contra or Super Mario World then I think the game would have been very special.

22:27 shows you how platform games like this should have went pretty much every single time on SNES vs Genesis, with the SNES version having more colours, more background layers, just as much line scrolling as seen on the ground perspective effect, extra details like the parallax window frame details on sides of the sheds, proper transparency as seen in the background clouds/sky, just as much vertical resolution as the Genesis, similarly running at 60fps with no slowdown just like the Genesis, and although it often doesn't in this game, it really should have richer music and better sound fx and voice samples for the most part too, etc. And the Genesis should have a bit more horizontal view, as it does here, and little else. Sadly, while it seems many developers really pushed the Genesis to its limits, especially when their games were available on both consoles, they rarely pushed the SNES as far as it could actually go.

And I guess a game like Symphony of the Night with its 256x208 resolution is just utter trash to you as well, yes. Also, what about the hundreds of Genesis games that are in 256x224 resolution too, including Super Monaco GP, Top Gear 2, Sunset Riders, Street Fighter II: Special Champion Edition, Super Street Fighter 2, Splatterhouse 3, Shining Force 1 and 2, Fatal Fury 1 and 2, Wonder Boy in Monster World, Out of this World, Mega Bomberman, Bonanza Brothers, Saturday Night Slam Masters, Micro Machines, Lotus II and Lotus Turbo Challenge, Hyperstone Heist, Virtua Racing, etc--all total crap, right.
