Earthworms are gardeners' best friends as they reside in the soil and feed on decomposing organic matter, which leads to the growth of beneficial soil bacteria. If you notice a large population of earthworms in your garden, it indicates a healthy soil ecosystem. Adding compost worm castings or liquid can further enhance the soil quality and promote the growth of nutrient-dense food. Consider subscribing to our channel to learn about beneficial animals, gardening, designing self-sufficient systems, and heaps more!

Nothing makes me happier then seeing worms where there was once barren soil

We collect other citizen's bags of leaves and bury our beds 6" deep before winter. In May, I plant my potatoes then add even more leaves. The leaves keep the moisture in the soil while blocking weeds while adding nutrients and building soil. The worms love it. Every year, we dig up 200 lbs of diverse potatoes for our basement.

It’s calculated that a healthy acre of soil has worms that “turn over” about 400 tonnes of earth a year, creating innumerable cavities into which air, then water seep and interact with the soil biosphere.

My neighbor didn't understand how to promote worm population, I helped him understand that soil must be the first thing to pay attention to. I am a tenant, chose to have my wormery in my kitchen. I have greatly reduced my organic "garbage" and now have both the understanding of compost tea and extract. My house plants are getting to be lush just with the extract watering. I will have an outdoor "dalek" type of composter to add more nutrients.

I compost table scraps and straw from my chicken coop and it's full of night crawlers! A little hot at times for some plants, but mostly the garden does really well.
