Easier loading a boat onto a bunk trailer

I started guiding in 1978 so I’m here to share what I’ve learned from being on the water about 175 days a year. Loading and unloading my boat 2x a day has taught me ways to make my day easier. If this works for you and helps you out, great and if it’s not allowed where you are then load accordingly to your launch site’s requirements. It’s allowed here as we have concrete ramps poured out to 50 feet. Be safe out there!

Same with here in Wisconsin, we fish a lot of shallow lakes. Some even have a dock attendants that get upset if you power load. Understandably with gravel landings it tends to create a hump and ruin your prop. Fortunately we have gotten good at just using momentum and not having to get wet cranking the boat up.

Great informative video. I've backed in many trailers that weren't mine, for unloading and loading over the years and learned these things early on. You figure things out the more you do it. It's always easiest to back in a little too far, hang out the door and wait for the boat driver telling you to pull up a little, rather than play the back n forth bs. If you're doing this on your own, you'll figure out pretty quick where your trailer should be for proper loading.

@JimHanelyfishing Месяц назад
💯 on the money. That ramp is all poured concrete but was designed by a ny state bureaucrat who had no knowledge of how to launch a boat. I call that ramp the “optical delusion” as it looks steep but is actually the opposite…so you need to get your tires in a bit. The design is so bad that the bike path crosses the same area as the boats back into. Thanks for the comment

I can tell you’re not a duck hunter. We often launch our boats in very shallow water. Sometimes the boat launch is the deepest water we run in, and sometimes we even have to push the boat off the trailer. So yeah, we dip our tires in A LOT.

If it’s a pontoon boat. It’s easier to back the trailer up right to where the wheel wells are covered in water and get the pontoon boat aligned with the bunks. Then once the pontoon boat is aligned with the bunks, use a little bit of throttle and have the person in the car back the car down the boat ramp more while your throttling up the trailer. Works like a charm.

My Uncle tried telling me it was against the law to power load the boat. Always did it the hard way. That was until I bought a boat, took him out on it, power loaded it, and when he told me it was illegal, we had a conversation. No, in fact, it is not illegal. Some ramps are dirt, and those are frowned upon, but the concrete ramps we have, its totally fine. I encouraged him to actually look it up. And when he couldn't find it on his phone, he admitted he heard it from a "friend." He now power loads his boat.

When i bought my boat, the trailer wasn't properly adjusted. I went to a ramp during the week when there was little traffic and unloaded the boat. I adjusted the bunks so that they would each land outside of a hull chine. After this, i could easily approach the trailer even with conflicting wind and current and it would center up and load correctly. I often went out alone, but could quickly launch and load. The longest part was parking and retrieving my vehicle/trailer.

The only problem I see with this technique is if you have shallow water at the ramp, I've seen guys hit the bunks and then rev their outboard and sometimes it hits bottom. But that works the technique you're talking about very well if you've got deep enough water at the ramp. The only other issue you get is if you bank the bunks all the way in the water sometimes your boat floats away before you can get it out of the water.. hey but look at the bright side at least you can back up and get your trailer in the water without 27 attempts. I might be wrong but i believe your bunks are loose every bunk trailer I’ve seen hasn’t had moving bunks. But I’ve also only been around custom built trailers for so called “hot” boats. In our case we are running 2.5l and inboard outboards with lower units worth more than your boat itself so we will never be power loading(because of the turned up shit) I like how you dip your trailer. But power loading does leave divots that I’ve seen people hit. But some ramps are designed for it and it works great. The only downside you have is it it will prematurely wear the carpet. But you fully dip it to help prevent that. It wears faster because of the angle with the engine you don’t let the boat slide up the bunk like designed.

That flex is a normal thing to see on “bunk” trailer. They are 9 feet long and are supported at each end and designed to take the shape of the boats hull as its drive on. Thanks for the feedback.

Yeah and throw 3 foot waves everywhere behind you in the most wakeless area on the lake! Definitely get the bunks wet, but don’t be the guy at full throttle putting your boat on the trailer!!

I do the same as you. Get all the bunks wet and pull forward a little. One of the lakes I frequently fish will ticket you for power loading. It sucks especially when you’re by yourself. Trying to climb over the bow onto the trailer and winch it up.

They need to make people take courses if they buy a boat. I went to Florida and guess what. You can get a boaters license in 15 min online. A temp one for 3 months. I knew how to drive one but that explains all the boat accident in Florida.
@JimHanelyfishing
@JimHanelyfishing 29 дней назад
I actually lobbied for that here in NY and it went through. Its not much more then what you explained but at least its a start. As a captain, I have to be aware of whatever the boat approaching me is going to do, even if I have right of way. I’m prepared to make a course change to avoid a collision. Thanks for the feedback.

First boat I had had a roller trailer. What a frigging nightmare to load. I never got used to that thing. New boat got a bunk trailer and man what a difference. If it it’s not perfect, it still usually one and done. Get it close enough and crank the rest if needed.

Just use liquid roller or silicon spray on that part of your bunks. Don’t spray all of the bunks unless you want your boat to really slide off
