Hey buddy. Decided to actually buy the the molds and have a try myself. Just made the samples tonight so will know more tomorrow. Even made myself a vibrating table to help with the process. Will keep you informed of the outcome. Paul from the UK.

Out of all the videos I've watched on how to make coasters, yours is the best! Thank you for explaining in detail everything you did to make your coasters. I made a few this week for the first time, several came out shiny and smooth, I now know why, those had the thinner batter. I'm using mortar mix and it does great. Thank you again for making this video!

Wow, thanks. That's awesome, I'm glad I could help and I'm glad you tried it. Thanks so much for watching! I'd love to see them, I can even feature them if you emailed me some pics!

These are the smoothest concrete coasters, that I've seen so far. You did a great job, compared to others. Very nice. I'm going to try it, your way! Thanks a lot :)

Really lovely coasters! What did you seal them with please?
@JessedoesDIY

Thanks! I just used a Rustoleum spray can clear, but you can also buy a concrete sealer like Changs and use that if you want.

Hi. Good job. What did you use to seal your coaster? And how are your coasters holding up after one year?
@confidence_onyema
@confidence_onyema 4 года назад
Also does the spray act as a moisture barrier? As in waterproof? Thank you.
@JessedoesDIY
@JessedoesDIY 4 года назад
Thanks. It's just a basic laquer spray can clear coat in whatever sheen you want. They are holding up just fine. The more coats of clear you put on will layer up to a full layer on top and become water proof. I only put on a couple coats and it soaks in conditioning the cement. Water can still soak in, but nothing stains them and they dry after

Hey Jesse, thanks for sharing the process to make these lovely coasters! I've tried it too, but I also did a drop test to test the durability of the coasters. I dropped it from a height of less than 50cm, and it broke into half. Was wondering if your coasters are 'drop-proof' as well, or if you have any tips to make it stronger. Thanks Jesse!
@JessedoesDIY
@JessedoesDIY 4 года назад
Hey Eugene, thanks for watching! I actually haven't tested the drop durability of these so I'm not sure. There is a super fine mesh you can buy as a concrete reinforcement you just trim with scissors to size, but that won't make it crack proof, it will just hold it together after its cracked. Unfortunately the reason they may be brittle is because of how thin they are, as well as the mix is just sand, cement and water basically. What really gives thicker concrete its strength is the stone aggregate in it, and because these don't have that, or anything else is what makes the crackable

what was that clear spray you used? was it a varnish spray?

Hey man, so my coasters are turning out alright, however the top layer ends up crumbly and “dusty” how can I avoid this and get a clean finish like yours?
@JessedoesDIY
@JessedoesDIY 3 года назад
If they are crumbly and dusty the mix might not have enough water, or it might not be mixed thoroughly before pouring them in the mould. After they are made they need to be sealed otherwise they will dust. Hope that helps

Appears you didn’t put a top coat so I was wondering when you put a hot cup of coffee for 15 minutes will the coaster stick to the cup!
@JessedoesDIY
@JessedoesDIY 3 года назад
I sure did, I applied a couple coats of rattle can lacquer clear coat. That was my top coat. Nothing sticks to them
@margiedurham650

@@JessedoesDIY I’m so impressed with your video- best I have watched in a while. What is the brand name if your top coat- is rattle brand as you stated. I have known people that have stopped making coasters because they can’t find that top coat that doesn’t stick. Maybe you should do a video and show it does not stick. I will for sure like and share. That would fit your reply also. And can you tell me where I can purchase that top coat please. Thank you.
@JessedoesDIY
@JessedoesDIY 3 года назад
It's Rustoleum painters touch, you can find it most anywhere. I just used Matte finish, couple coats. You could also use Tuff Duck concrete sealer from Amazon. I have a link to it in my other concrete videos

So I got hydrated lime and have cement as well. What ratios do I use to make coasters?
@JessedoesDIY
@JessedoesDIY 3 года назад
That I'm not sure. Usually I'd use some sand and cement in a 2-1 ratio-ish, adding water as necessary. See what works for you, then mix it to be like a oatmeal consistency.

@JessedoesDIY
@JessedoesDIY 3 года назад
Really? How runny was your mix? Too much water will weaken it. How long did you let them dry? How thick did you make them? What did you use for mix?
@bytheskinofmyteeth5786
@bytheskinofmyteeth5786 3 года назад
@@JessedoesDIY Both Brands were Quikrete one was a mortar mix and the other one was a sand topping mix. I have been careful of not putting too much water. And letting them sit for 24 hours.
@JessedoesDIY
@JessedoesDIY 3 года назад
Strange. Mortar should be plenty for it. How thick did you make them? Let them sit for 48 hours. 24 is just enough to dry, but 48 is better for a cure to the core of them

@@JessedoesDIY they are under an inch thick. I bought the molds on Amazon. I will try again and let them sit for longer. Thank you for the advice. Much appreciated. :)
