In this video I am showing you how I built what is possibly is the easiest and best DIY pig waterer ever! Don't cut access holes in your barrels, or use those leaky bulkheads. Try this and you will never make them any other way.
In the video I mention using a 1 1/2 inch drill bit. That is wrong! I used a 1 1/4 inch drill bit
Here are Amazon Affiliate links to the items I used in this video:
3/4" UNISEAL Flexible Tank Adapter (Bulkhead) - 5 Pack - amzn.to/3liNpqW
5 Heavy Duty Pig Nipples Stainless Steel Watering - amzn.to/3cCPOc2
The bulkhead adapter if you want to go that route - amzn.to/2PZnKrE

Quick added tip. If you cut the pvc pipe at an angle on the end you are passing thru the gasket. This will help start the pipe and you won’t have to need as much pressure to get past the gasket as a 90 degree cut would.

Now that I have moved my pigs several times since building these, I can attest that this method is pretty easy to drain by simply pulling out one of the nipples, and then shoving it back in when you are ready to refill. I have done this several times now, and the uniseal's are still holding strong!

Really enjoyed and picked up some great points from this video. You appeared to have solved several of the same things that have kept me from building a gravity fed pig nipple system. For instance - didn’t want to cut the barrels, still wanted good bulkheads and wanted some flexibility/movement allowed in the nipples. Great stuff. Really appreciate the follow up comment below, as well as the float add on video - I was concerned about the durability but you ha e put some of those concerns to ease as well. Thanks! Thank you for the video. I copied this system and it works well enough. The issue I am having with it is my pigs keep pulling the pipes completely out of the barrel causing the water to drain out. Also lost one of the uniseals in the mud after the pigs pulled it out and had to purchase another. Not really that big a deal but I am now looking for a way to better secure the nipples and pipes so that I am not constantly having to repair and refill it.
@WattsWayFarm
@WattsWayFarm 2 года назад
We had this same issue early on. For us, turned out that the solution was to raise the barrell up more. If the nipple is placed slightly above shoulder level and the pig has to reach up to drink, they seem to not pull it out. And as a bonus, it seems to not create as much of a wallow opportunity at the base of the waterer due to the water running more down the pigs throats and not out of their mouths and onto the ground. Maybe this will work for you?

Based upon this video, I ordered these parts and made this for my boar and sow waterer. So far so good (thye are about 420lbs & 370lbs). They suck and chew pretty hard, but the uniseal seems to be holding the pvc pipe in place. I was concerned that the boar would pull it out but first week is holding strong. The flexibility of the uniseal, like yer man says in the video is THE secret ingredient. Every time I tried these nipple waterers, my hogs have bent them, broke them and pulled them out. I will make one for the feeders this week, but wanted to the hard one first. IF it holds for the boar, it will be easy for the feeders (half the size & weight when full grown). I'd add photos but I don't see a way to do that here. I ratchet-strapped the barrel to t-posts atop two layers of cinder blocks, on my side of the hog panels with 6" pvc pipes extending into the pen. THANK YOU for this video!!! this is a game changer if it holds. Yer man's a genius. Please keep posting your ideas for "pig farmers for dummies" like me. Keep it simple like. Now, I need a way to keep the water from freezing during Michigan winter. Let me know what you're doing.

Saw this video and been looking for a good way to water my pigs. They tip there water bowl out and it’s a lot of work to get them water again. This may be a stupid question. Also will it give them enough water they need. Sorry for the long question
@WattsWayFarm
@WattsWayFarm 3 года назад
I think they will adjust to it very quickly. With my new batch of piglets I just got, I put a small dab of peanut butter on each nipple to ensure the little guys would find and use it, but I don't even think that is really necessary. Those guys are just really smart and figure it out. As far as giving them enough water, I think yes. No problem there either. The pigs simply stand there and drink their fill. Those nipples do have adjustable flow rates though if you want them to get more.

@WattsWayFarm
@WattsWayFarm 2 года назад
With these style pig nipples, adjusting the flow is kind of a pain, but once you figure out the setting you want, you only have to do it once. Short version is that on the opposite side of the nipple from where the pig drinks is a little disk you loosen to increase flow and tighten to decrease it.

Not sure if this has happened to anyone else, but I tried this method and my pigs are actually able to pull the entire nipple and pvc pipe piece out of the barrel completely. Draining all the water. I even tried epoxying it in and they still pulled it out. I had to change to a different method.

Been building waterers for several years. your process is still complicated and expensive. Drill your hole, heat barrel use bolt with same thread as nipple. Thread using bolt. Remove bolt, crew in nipples done. You can also us same process and add a drain valve at bottom. 15-20 min done and no glue ot tape.

Wow! That is some pig! Sorry this didn't work for you. I have been using these for close to a year now and have 3 different batches of pigs using them right now including my breeder sow's and boar and have only have had that happen to me once (just a few weeks ago my boar pulled it out). Now every once in a while, we do have to push to push them back in where the pigs have pulled them out a few inches The pigs do like giving them a work out, but that is one of the things I like about this solution. I figured if I went with the rigid bulkhead approach, they would break them off...
@WattsWayFarm
@WattsWayFarm 2 года назад
Had a boar start pulling nipple out. Raised the entire barrel up a little more with cement blocks and fixed the issue. No more pulling it out. The nipple needs to be slightly above shoulder level on the pig. Maybe this will help you too!

Alright, so as the owner of hyper destructive pigs… drill a hole through the PVC pipe inside the barrel close to the seals. Run some stout wire through those holes and link the pvc together to keep the pigs from pulling out pipes and wrecking the seals. Took my pigs less than 48 hours to destroy this design as is.

I'm going to have to be a bearer of bad news. I did make 2 barrels in this fashion, using the gaskets. Both had 4 nipples. Almost every gasket leaked. I used silicone to glue them in, but found that my pigs were actually pulling the nipple through the hole and out of the barrel. Not only did the pigs abuse it, the goats would hit them, causing the gasket to leak even more. I have built these types of waterers with secure nuts and washers on both sides, holding them tightly in place, in the past. These lasted for years. But this model just can't hold up to the abuse. Too much water loss. Wasted 2 barrels with this idea. Hoping I can come up with a new idea to use what is there, and securely get everything attached. Great idea. But it just doesn't work.

Is there a reason why you didn't just use half inch PVC with a half inch PVC female adapter to connect the nipples into? Also have you thought about welding a frame stand that would hold the tank up off the ground instead of using cinder blocks? Seems like that would be a good way to make it lighter and easier to move around.

Had the same issue but made it work. Just pry the unideal gasket halfway over the outside of the 3/4 pvc adaptor with a flathead screwdriver. Twist the uniseal gasket into the hole in the barrel. Then tap on the end of the nipple with a rubber mallet until the whole assembly snugs up into the gasket. The gasket will seal the outside diameter of the pvc adapter to the 1 and 1/2 " hole.
