I came here from that 2.5min video. What I learned from it, is that you make pairs. This is such a digestible video. I went from "What am I even looking at?" to "I could play a game right now and not have any questions". May have to use that cheat sheet for the chinese characters, but other than that, completely understand how to play.

In oder to count 'doubles'/''tai', you must know what is the current wind and which wind will count as 2 doubles. 🀄Red dragon 發Green dragon 🚪White dragon 東 East Wind 南 South Wind 西 West Wind 北 North Wind Pong takes precedence over Chow. You are only allowed to chow when the player on your left discard the tile.
@es330td
@es330td 2 года назад
If Pong gets preference over Chow, why would you not say "Pong" every time? Is "Chow" required if the previous person discarded the tile?
@dontan9637
@dontan9637 2 года назад
@@es330td Chow is taking the tile (discarded from the player on your left only) to form a series of 3 tiles. Pong is the taking of the same tile (discarded by any player) to form 3 of a kind. Chow is chow and pong is pong, which are 2 different actions.
@es330td
@es330td 2 года назад
@@dontan9637 So if I have 5,6 of dots and the player to my left discards the 7 of dots I say “Chow” but if I have two 4 of sticks and a third 4 is discarded I say “Pong” and now have 4,4,4?
@dontan9637
@dontan9637 2 года назад
Yes, both examples you given are correct. For that 7 dots (discarded by the player on your left), if another player say Pong, you cannot chow to make (5,6,7). Pong takes precedence. For the 4 sticks, you are right to Pong. But if another is calling for '4 sticks', you will have to give way. Coz Win take precedence over Pong. In summary: (lowest) Chow, Pong, Gong, Win (highest)
@user-pm8nj3mb6q
@user-pm8nj3mb6q 10 месяцев назад
@@es330td A Pong is more valuable because it has less options. If you have two "Green Dragon"s, there are only two other stones in the game that will let you complete them: the other two "Green Dragon"s. If you have 4 of Bamboo and 5 of Bamboo, there are four 3 of Bamboo or four 6 of Bamboo, that will complete that combination as a Chow. Thus, a Pong is considered more valuable. Why would you not Pong? Well, if you Pong, you reduce your options. Suppose you have 3 of Bamboo, through to 5 of Bamboo, and another 5 of Bamboo through to 7 of Bamboo. If you now Pong a 5 of Bamboo, you are left with 3 of Bamboo and 4 of Bamboo and 6 of Bamboo and 7 of Bamboo. Good luck in getting something decent out of that. (Not the best example, but I hope you get they idea.) Is a "Chow" required? If you want to take the tile the previous player discarded, you have to say "Chow". You are not required to make the Chow, however. If nobody Pongs or Kangs, you can just take the next blind stone from the wall.

Yakuza uses Japanese riichi rules, which is more complicated than what is presented here. Knowing the wind honor tiles matters since depending on what seat you're in and what round it is will determine if you can use them for certain hands, there's a whole hand value system where you need yaku to qualify a winning hand, a points system, etc. You'll want to look up riichi mahjong tutorial videos.

Thats something i didnt understand also, like why is there that distinction if the rules seem to only be different if the player is on the left of you? Like does chow take precedent over pong if both are called or something? If theres no actual difference then why have two different calls?
@oxiepidge

Chow (chii) is specifically for sequence calls from your left like 123 and pong (pon) is only for calling the 3rd tile for a triplet and can be called from any seats discard that turn

@@oxiepidge With the pong call being made for any discard in theory this could conflict with another players chow call? if so who gets the tile?

The Chow is a row of three tiles, each of the same suit, with each a number one higher than the previous. Those could be 3 of Rings, 4 of Rings and 5 of Rings.You can only make a Chow on the table if the player before you discarded it, or making the Chow will Win you the game. The Pong is a series if three tiles, all three with the same image. Those could be 7 of Wan, 7 of Wan, and 7 of Wan. You can make a Pong regardless of what other player discarded the tile. As a Pong is more difficult to make, it has right of way over a Chow. Yet, a Win is even more difficult, so a Chow Winning the game will take priority. A Pong winning the game will take prioriy over that, but a Closing Pair will have priority over that again.

Thank you! A very concise explanation of the rules. Mahjong games can get quite boisterous, especially when gambling is involved.

Great teacher. Love that you explain every little nuance. These are often the issues which trip up beginners. Just found a set from the 1920s in a charity shop and now want to play 👏👏👏

Thank you so much for this video! I watched many videos on how to play the game but didn't understand anything. Your tutorial is the only one with clear explanation of rules. I ordered mahjong today, can't wait for it to get here to play with my hubby.

Really enjoyed the video; very informative and nicely detailed. I liked that you explained the flow of the game first and the limitations of what each player can do, because it can get confusing when you try to learn the rules all at once. Thank you. Now I can start watching Akagi 🤓

Omg LMAO. 0:22 I literally came from that video, and came away thinking ‘wtf’. I kinda just moved onto this video and the side eye shade 2.5 zoom in absolutely floored me 😂 I literally learnt nothing

After watching four other tutorials, I have to say that yours is the best. I'm on the fifth episode of Mahjong Legend Akagi: The Genius Who Descended Into the Darkness, and decided I didn't wanna be confused anymore. I'm loving the anime since it's written and animated so well, but this game is so intimidating to absolute beginners. With what I've learned from you, I know I'll have a much easier time understanding what's going on, so thanks a million!

Great tutorial. I played a few games with seasoned players who played two different styles and was so confused with the conflicting instruction that I needed to cleanse and relearn. This was perfect. Thank you!

Best Mahjong learning video of the 10 or 20 I've watched recently. You don't assume people already know things, which may teachers do, and you give us what we need to know and nothing else. Your voice is also very pleasant to listen to. (not sure why some are critical of your narration, maybe some just like to go against the consensus).
