rule of thumbs, don't strip the blue nail, otherwise your f'd. sync your trophies before doing this and copy music, videos, pictures, and especially your save files to a flash drive or ext. hdd, but if you don't want to take the time copying all the files/installing games to your ps3, do the backup. the backup takes a long time to complete, so i suggest you do it when you know your too busy to play it/asleep.

I hope the PS4 will be able to have an upgradable HDD because I'm thinking of replacing the 500GB HDD on Day One when the console is released and replacing it with a 1TB HDD :)
The PS3 will automatically have you format the HDD, I don't believe there is a way around that. What you need to do is, get another enclosed HDD or a large USB thumb drive and the PS3 has a backup utility built in that will load your save data on to the external drive. Then after you install your new HDD in the PS3, plug in the external USB and load your saves. Also anything you've bought from the PS Store can be re-downloaded once you log back in to the PSN.
Sorry, your comment came up as spam so I'm just seeing it now. If the HDD was already in a PS3 I would try to install it and see what happens. If all else fails don't format it, if prompted, and then give the HDD to your mate and have him back it up for you on an external drive so that when you format it you can just recover all the files. I would just wait, SDD drive might come dow in price, by the time you fill your hard drive, though only 10 games will fit on the 500Gb PS4, so only 20 games for 1Tb. I would wait, get a 2Tb or an SDD later.

My question is when I do this and use the external drive I have to backup the information, will I have to create another online user name for play? Can you downgrade to an 80GB hard drive? My fat ps3 died on me so I bought a refurbished ps3 slim and I want all of my stuff back. Is it possible to put an 80GB hard drive from a fat ps3 into a slim ps3?
You neede to get the latest software update for re-installation from a computer and put it in a usb stick. Afterwards you plug it in to your ps3 and press on reinstall or something like that and you should be good.
***** are you downloading the update for reinstallation, not the regular one. If so, try formatting the usb and put the reinstallation update file back in there.
So doing this won't mess up the PS3 software? Cos the last thing I want is to replace the hard drive and it corrupt the software or anything like that.
backing up files is point less!! i do this all the time n its jst bs o and the 750gb hdd is not the bigest i have a 1tb hdd in mine iand i have put thm in my frinds ps3s as well and all withOUT ANY MODS! no dam difrnse
Connect your PS3's via Ethernet cable and go to settings, make sure both PS3's are the same firmware version, Disable Media Server Connecetion and your internet in Network Settings, then go to System Settings, then Data Transfer Utility, (make sure ethernet cable is connected to both ps3s) Press "Ok" And select "Transfer data from this system to the other PS3 System", then press "Ok", go to the other PS3 but do not turn off the current system. Then disconnect from media server and internet connection, Then go to system settings, Data Transfer, then select "Transfer data from the other PS3 system to this system", BEWARE IT WILL ERASE EVERYTHING FROM THE PS3 SYSTEM THAT IS RECIEVING DATA, and you have an option to delete everything from the other PS3.

No you don't need to install anything on the hard drive before pitting it in the ps3 and yes it works on the ps3 phat but make sure to back up your save games from the old ps3 because you'll have to restore it next time you put the old one in
