The easiest way to grow sugarcane is to first start sugarcane in water. Best time to plant sugarcane is in February. Sugarcane takes 11 months to harvest, so this way you can get a head start in growing sugarcane. You can also directly plant sugarcane in ground as well if temperature in your region gets above 70F in February. However if the day time temperature stays below 70F in Feb and March, it is best to first start sugarcane in water and when temperature reaches above 70F during the day, transplant the newly rooted sugarcane cutting in the ground. Add a lot of compost to loose well drained soil and plant sugarcane in clusters for a great harvest!

Living in a 4 season area can sugar cane be grown in pots as well or is it better in the ground ?
@DaisyCreekFarms
@DaisyCreekFarms 4 года назад
It's better in the ground. If your growing season is not too long in summer, you can use greenhouse cover to protect sugarcane and retain heat.

Hii Jag...my husband and I been watching lots of your videos... Growing up in Trinidad and Tobago, the island has lots of sugar cane, which we always enjoy eating, unfortunately we live not in zone 7 in the US so can't even plant sugar cane but will do lots other veggies in the summer... We enjoy watching your videos and was wondering where is your farm located?

1. Generally you don't want to submerge the node that you want the shoots coming out of. The shoot can 'drown'. It's best to have at least 2 nodes, and one node submerged. 2. Always plant it laying down. (I guess it doesn't matter much if you have only one node)

Really appreciate the video, Jag! There are so many (20+ minute long) videos showing "easy" ways to grow sugar cane, but your video is informative and concise! You've also given me a reason to visit India (vast fields of sugar cane), aside from the amazing street food, so thanks for that! I'm in Michigan (zone 5b/6a) - hardly tropical if any sense. Do you think I'd be able to grow some sugar cane over the course of a summer for the kids to enjoy? I realize it won't survive the winter (outside), but it seems like a pretty hardy plant that I could do something with inside over the winter.

Maybe this will be of interest. I live in the northeast but use two clear tote bins over my non hardy plants and keep them alive all winter during sub zero temps. The theory is that each tote creates an environment 200 miles south of current location. It would be a way to start sugar cane right in the ground maybe. Thanks for enjoyable video.
@genkiferal7178
@genkiferal7178 2 года назад
starting them in a compost pile in full sun is the other way. the problem is when you remove them from the warm compost pile or they are too big to fit under a tote - then winter kills them the following cold season.

I grew up hiking in Brazil chewing sugar cane among the fields. You need hard teeth and jaws to do that (and a bit of skill). Some "gringos" almost broke their mouth trying it LOL... The secret is to peel and then slice smaller it into thinner sticks to chew. The you get used to it. I don't think any other country plant more sugar cane than Brazil. We also use ethanol from it in our cars...
