Easiest way to make a HV supply from an old TV or PC monitor (best flyback driver)

I didn't quite understand why it was necessary to put lamps in the circuit... would they serve as resistance?

Would it work to use a fluorescent light ballast instead of the halogen bulb transformer?

The bottom of my flyback had small shorts and arcs at the bottom. I just set it in enough mineral oil to cover the bottom and it became safe and silent with no shorting and still had full power. They work just as well fully submerged. Pure mineral oil from the pharmacy, not baby oil.

Why cant you use a resister in place of the light bulb?

Isn't it better to find the primary coil of the pens and then the neutral ground of the secondary hv wire? Will you get a higher out put? And a low amp power source so you don't kill you self with a shock ?

What is the use from these type of high voltAge

Why you dont power it on real 230v with a bulb AS Ballast ?

Most crt displays have bleeder circuits that will discharge the capacitors in the circuit slowly after use, but I would'nt risk my life on such an assumption. Sticking your hands into old t.v's, computer monitors, and electronics in general can be deadly; even if they are unplugged. The first thing you should have done was discharge the high voltage wire with a chicken stick connected to ground to esnure that their is no risk of getting a lethal or very painful shock. Good to also mention that the vacuum tube can implode and send glass flying everywhere. Ripping apart old electronics is easier than one would think, but when making a video showing people how to do it you should always start with the risks and safety precautions, and that is coming from a generally irresponsible person who takes many risks on an almost daily basis.

If you get your hands on a portable CRT TV then there is almost no need to do anything shown. Just detach the high voltage cable and wire it out of the TV's frame. As for the other end, well, you either find the right connector or just "ground" it into the metal frame of the TV. The later worked for me but after a while the spark got much shorter so I must've been burning through something. Then simply turn the TV on and have fun. Obviously the spark will be shorter than it is in this video because the voltages are lower. But it's good for getting a quick feel of what it's like.

Are you using the bulbs just as transistors? or do they serve another purpose. A.k.a. can i just get like a 200w transistor rather than the bulbs?

Very cool, most videos i see people use fluorescent ballast and CFLs, can you explain why the lights are important? My best guess is that they are used to draw more current from the ballast.

Ok, that's one way to do it. Another, if you don't have a ballast, is to use the circuit from a standard house hold CFL light and connect the outputs directly to the flyback primary pins. No loud buzzing, and it's cheap.
