I just needed the cabinet, but them I got to looking at the speaker and decided it was worth saving. You've saved an Oaktron sir ;O}

Just completely rebuilt a JBL D120f 12" for my 1965 Deluxe Reverb.. I've done surrounds and realigned Polk Audio magnets but never a full rebuild.. Have no fear, think before you start take your time follow the instructions and it will be easy. Been watching Craig's list and Ebay for blown EV and JBL guitar amp speakers.

Yeah one thinks it Voodoo and Mojo but it's really easy if you take your time and think it through.. The lining up of the voice coil depth is the big part.. And poking holes in the cone to run the leads next is the soldering the leads to the voice coil.. Working on your soldering technique is a must as you will see all your work go poof before your eyes if you get sloppy.. using Aluminum dust caps make sure your leads are insulated as the dust cap will ground the leads and put you in a panic.. I simply place my leads under the dust cap if the cap does not mount to the voice coil former/Bobbin or just outside to avoid this issue.

Awesome video, clear and concise. Do you use the contact glue as contact glue (apply to both pieces, let dry, press together) or just as a directly applied rubberized glue? Do you find your kits from the manufacturer or from other, aftermarket sources? Cheers!!

You sure made it look easy, been holding off IVE got probably a dozen great speakers waiting to be fixed. I think I’ll order a few kits and do it over the winter. Thanks a lot.. oh question how much time do you actually have into this speaker. 2. This wasn’t your first speaker right? You looked professional doing it.

Devcon makes excellent epoxy glues but I don't recall ever seeing their contact cement. I've used Devcon "2-ton" epoxy many times; they also used to make a white epoxy that cured to a porcelain or ceramic-like surface ---- I used it, as well as some "Liquid Aluminum", to patch a leaky mold for making fishing weights from molten lead!

you can use thinned down clear RTV from the hardware store. Thin with oderless mineral spirits. You dont want to glob it on, just enough to permeate the suspension to create a air tight seal. Rubber/poly suspensions dont need this, but the old cloth or paper type suspensions can benefit from this.

nice! a piece of masking tape can be used to clean the coil slot where the spacer goes if anything got down there, just push it in like a ribbon and pull it out until no particles are found stuck to it.
@goodun2974
@goodun2974 3 года назад
Steve, even better than masking tape for cleaning debris from the voice-coil gap: the sticky edge of "Post-It" notes, those sticky notes you use as reminders on your fridge etc. The sticky paper is thicker than masking tape and doesn't curl up so much. I've even used it to clean the coil gap on old analog meters such as the one in my tube tester.

One thing I don’t understand is the point of reconing a speaker if it’s original parts are unavailable. It only makes sense if it’s parts are around. But with discontinued products it makes no sense

That's not how contact cement works. Contact cement goes on both mating surfaces and is allowed to dry. Then make contact of those two parts.

you got to love it when someone knows how it's done before they upload a 'who to' :} i'm about to attempt to fix the actual coil of an 8" just because i feel like it. fun fact, speakers are the weakest and least efficient electrical motors. most have an efficiency of less than 1%. it's not even funny :}
