The ram pump drive pipe and delivery pipe need to be full of water before the ram pump can work properly. Filling these pipes can be a challenge especially with larger pumps. A great solution to this problem is the Drill Pump. The drill pump connects to the end of a drill and pushes a lot of water through the pipes quickly. This helps to prime the drive pipe and fill the delivery pipe so the pump can start cycling on its own.

If you left that garden hose attachment on the waste valve and let it cycle it would most likely dampen that knocking noise as the pump operates..

How long do the plastic valves last???? Brass has a very short life....... The swing doors loose tolerances and start getting sideways motion on the flap door, then they stick stop..... Then I have to climb in and out of the ravine just to tap the door.... I have 60ft penstock..... 3 =20ft PVC pipes one that is 3' and 2@2"...... Less than 3ft of drop over 100ft lift on 700ft of 1/2" return line....... I have an 1800 gallon tank and only get 2 tank fills before the checks are thrashed......

To save all the faff, I would be tempted to put the drill pump in a valve off by pass loop. You could even incorporate drain valves to help remove the sediment. Tee off before the ram pump and loop to the drill pump then reconnect after the ram. You could still use the brook to charge the drill. And if you were really concerned about sediment you could put a strainer on the feed pipe. Just a thought. Nice simple vid👍🏼

Instead of getting your drill wet, just partially open the delivery valve.

The larger pumps make a louder click. The 1/2" pump is not bad at all.
