Love this! You never hesitate at that first cutting action! So inspiring! I find V-necks to be most flattering and buzz right past so many knit tops without them, not any more though! I have gotten quite experienced at altering a t-shirt from crew to V-neck, but this makes me want to go thrift a sweater and try it! 🥳 I need a project to feed my soul during these very short, dark days! As always, thank you & well done!😊
Thank you, you gave me the confidence to change my turtle neck sweater in a v neck, I had to cut it in half and sew the 2 pieces together to give me the length needed: IT ACTUALLY WORKED!!
Newbie here, just catching up on your great tutorials. Upcycling, for me, has been a great way to express creatively thru the years as well as saving perfectly good fabric from the landfill. I love your time-saving tips! I just finished making a toasty lined zippered vest from a beautiful pleated wool plaid skirt. After taking out all the pleat stitching, I had almost five yards of 45" wide fabric! More projects to come from just one thrifted skirt. Happy to have found your channel!
I found you not long ago and I am actually basically binge watching all of your videos!!! the best on sewing I found so far!!!! please do more on pattern construction, I am self tought and now I make all of my clothes and I also do patchwork and quilting but although I did do a pattern construction course, if you don't do it constantly you just forget everything, your videos are fabulous "refreshers", I am so glad I found you, many greetings and happy holidays from Zurich Switzerland, Dona
What a great idea! I just thrifted a beautiful turtleneck, but the neck elastic is really uncomfortable. I'm sure that's why it was thrifted. I was preparing to donate it again but will try this instead. Thank you and Merry Christmas!
I have several sweaters that I have been wanting to convert for several years. A couple have silk blended into them. I've been afraid to cut them, wondering if they would unravel or stretch; or what I would use to bind the neckline. THIS video is SO helpful & timely. This is my time to do this. Thank you so much for this tutorial!!
Wow! I would never have thought you could cut into a sweater without having it fall apart. No stay-stitching first? I'll have to take a deep breath and plunge into it :)
Great tutorial! I always enjoy your tips and tricks, you are a very smart gal. Just wondering though, have you done a video on how to put sleeves into a sleeveless top or dress. I'm not so happy with my arms anymore, would love to cover them up in an easy way.
I have several sweaters sitting in the back of my closet because the necklines are too tight. Thanks for reminding me how much nicer they would be with a better neckline. After all, what good were they in the back of the closet?
Thank you so much for this video! I'm finding that I cannot tolerate high necklines anymore, I feel strangled. And yes, the V-neck is more flattering. I'm assuming this technique will also work for a scoup neck, cuz a girl like variety.
This is really helpful. The only thing I couldn't quite get was where exactly you were sewing when you did the understitch. I need to look that up to make sure I understand.

Any chance you would make a similar video turning a mock turtleneck into a boat neck? I bought a shirt I liked except for the neckline. It is made of a mostly polyester wide rib knit fabric. I bought a piece of fabric (mostly polyester brushed knit) to use as a neck band, but I'm not sure how to go about it.
I know you are not a fan of turtlenecks, but I live in them from October to June. I prefer for the turtle to really hug my heck, no drafts allowed. I often see turtleneck sweaters at the thrift stores where the only thing stopping me from purchasing them is that the turtle is loose around my neck. I think that some of my favorite sweaters were donated because someone thought the neck was too tight but it's just the way I like it. Do you have any suggestions for decreasing the width of a turtleneck? I'd love for you to show us in a video.
Haha, I'm sure we'd get along fine as thrifting buddies because we'd be searching for opposite things! I'm sure you could make the neck smaller by removing the turtleneck, making it a smaller tube, and then sewing it back on by just stretching it a bit to fit the neckline. The original neckline would probably accommodate it easily.
It's a knit fabric, but I would definitely try it on a knitted garment. They're not as different as you might think! I do a lot of sweater upcycling and I treat knitted garments just like I treat knitted fabric. The mock T that I have has a sewn on neck and is made of cotton jersey. I'll probably have to piece the facing. How much shorter should the facing be than the opening in the shirt?
Hmmm, good question. The outer edge of my facing was the same measurement as the neckline that I cut. So I guess you can cut your neckline, then duplicate that shape as the outer edge of your facing. Make sense?
Yes, sometimes they ahve that extra bit of binding at the back. Every upcycler's nemesis, lol, This video might be useful for the V: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ehAdA86tFdw.htmlsi=CMFp_gW0j0SQHKCz

I was AM worried about converting some into a V neck and not having them fit on my shoulders right - is this a baseless fear ? you did nothing here to keep the shoulders in place :) so I am hoping ....
Be assured that your shoulders will be fine! It’s only if you do a wide neck or a deep neck in the front and the back that you need to consider your shoulders.
@@CatherineSews OMG - thanks you SO much for that - I have had scissors hovering over a sweater for MONTHS - but as I am super new to sewing - my brain kept saying it would mess up the entire thing - and I hate turtle necks .... this wee little answer - I can't tell you how much it means to me! :)
