Great footage! I lived in Germany in the late 1980s as a child and hope to revisit in the next couple years. I got to experience the Fall of the Berlin Wall in person...an experience I'll never forget! My family lived near Giessen and we just happened to be visiting Berlin when the Wall fell on Nov. 9th 1989, a very lucky coincidence. My Father had a camcorder at the time and recorded our experience!
The most surreal place I remember living. 84,87,88,89,90. Sometimes I’ll smell it, coffee, grit, olive oil… A most interesting epoch - a fantastic landscape - 20’s days…
Note how entering East Berlin was like travelling 15 years back in time. That is what will happen to Russia now, after their attack on Ukraine. They are isolated, they've never had any real development, economic or otherwise. In ten years they'll look like we did 5 years ago, only poorer, with trashier cars and even worse houses. It's sad but it may take a few decades of stagnation before a new generation of Russians get rid of the tyrants and rejoin the modern world.
they have had to word 8,75 h a day and ordering a car take at least 8-10 years time .... my first visit of East Berlin (Capital of GDR) was 1979 and now i live here since 2012
I was stationed in Berlin at the time this video was taken. This brought back so many memories. I was an MP and might have been working at Checkpoint Charlie as this was filmed? Anyway. thanks for the "flashback" 😎✌
It's because while gaining political freedom they lost their superior education- and healthcare systems and a strong sense of community. For many of them life was actually better back then. It may seem absurd to us looking back but when you think about what's really important in life, life in the GDR wasn't so bad.
