There are very few english people left in the East End now. The foreign cultures that have taken root in the east end and in most provincial english cities have no interest in Pubs. The closure of Pubs in general are a euphemism for the end of england and english people in general.

One of the main reasons that so many pubs have closed in the East End is because of the ongoing Islamisation of the East End in the name of diversity.

Born in bow by the old bow bridge and the lea in the Mid 1930's I married the daughter of the landlord of the Bombay Grab Bow road which I now understand to have become a Mosque, after many years in my wife's family the previous landlord was jimmy lane the would Champion wrestler, i became a publican taking over the old army-navy Plaistow the new carpenters-arms carpenters road Stratford and the white horse high street east ham, in the early 60s, the old army-navy was demolished and a new one built, then the white horse demolished, the carpenters -arms I believe is still going but I have many memories in these pubs with the weekend singalongs and entertainment, I now live in the Cotswolds but still an Eastender at heart.

I come from the East End, I was born there, I now live forty miles away. The weekend just gone, hubby and I revisited and wanted to have an East End pub crawl. The one pub we especially wanted to revisit closed around six weeks ago, I was gutted. The amount of other pubs that now have their windows and doors boarded up is heartbreaking, such a damn shame :(

difference is the crafty snowflakes moving into Bethnal Green in particular are keeping a lot open for themselves . They don't serve traditional lagers and beers that we are used to but U .S or Italian for example chharging higher than usual so we don't go there . Its a disgrace now tbat all good cokneys can now be found stuck in some weattherspoons thinking "hold on a minute , somethings not right here . I drank in many of the pubs shown on here at one time or another during the 60s as a teenager. of course some people don't have any roots only a hut in a dusty field so they think they have the right to put anybody down that has good memories of the place they grew up in. it was then a community a dirty grimey place to live but it was community which has now gone.

Sure, if the English moves out so does their habits and thus the pubs. However, even in places with 90% Brits like for example Liverpool many pubs have closed also...Same goes in all other western countries, even if the place is still 90% "local", bars-cafes-bistros have all closed in large numbers since the late 80:s...

I'm only 51 but can remember when a night in the pub was A:affordable,B: something most people did on a regular basis and C: the only food on offer was a cheese and onion roll out of a plastic dome thing.No doubt some younger viewers of You-Tube will be thinking 'so what was good?' Trust me,you've missed out.2 pints of lager and a couple of bags of crisps for this-side of a pound,no drugs and everybody knew each other.The local dick-heads were and kept an eye on, and if it went wrong they were dealt with.Going to a town centre pub now on a Friday night is like going to a war-zone and just not fun anymore.Such a shame

I’ve drunk in a fair few of these pubs, and many others not mentioned - The Prince Regent, The Peacock, The New Gog, The Steps, The Freemasons Arms, The Beckton Arms, The Paul’s Head….I could go on for ages! It’s an interesting fact (could be a coincidence, I don’t know) that the demise of the British Pub has seen a relative increase in men’s mental health issues. Not because of the drink, but because the pub used to be the place to go and have a laugh and chat with your mates. Somewhere you made an effort to get dressed up for. Somewhere you could vent about your problems instead of bottling them up. I’m 66 now. As a kid we were often outside pubs on a Friday and Saturday night with a packet of crisps and a lemonade. There was always an adult checking on us. They were places that ALL of my family went to. As an example: My Nan, who raised me and my sister used to work in Woolworth, Canning Town. On Fridays and Saturdays after work her and my aunt Peg would have a light ale (or two) in the Beckton Arms which was at the back of the shop. They’d then get a mini cab to the Nottingham Arms (long gone) on Prince Regent lane Custom House where they’d meet other family members including my dad, stop until closing when Aunt Peg would get a cab back home. Saturday would be similar but from the Beckton they’d go to the Paul’s head (near Aunt Peg) and Nan would get a cab home…… When I joined the Army in 1975, I would ALWAYS know where I could ring Nan (she never ever had a phone at home) and at what time. My diary was full of pub numbers and I knew the landlord and landlady of all of them. A real nostalgia trip this was….sad to see the death of British pub culture it really and truly is.
@AbdulKareem-uy6hk

I totally agree with you. I'm a Muzzie (Muslim). I obviously don't drink but pubs are part of British culture. It is sad to see the demise. I was Born in the Isle of Dogs/Poplar and grew up In Stratford in the 80s and 90's. My mother and I still have a cockney accent. My grandparents Immigrated from Nigeria about 70 odd years ago. My daughter was born in the Isle of Dogs. We registered her birth at Bow registry. She's only 15 but still a cockney through and through. I live south of the river now but I still visit my mother in the East End...

dean madnut The church that held the Bow Bells is the St Mary-le-Bow church in Cheapside. These were the bells that people had to be born within earshot to be a true cockney. The Great Bell in this church, (the loudest), was destroyed in an air-raid in 1941. The St Mary and Holy Trinity church in Bow, which you speak of, is still a church.

THe music and the pictures of those Grand old pubs, brought me tears in my eyes ......I remember playing a bit of music, once in a while..... in many of those once glorious pubs. ... Watching other brilliant musicians play ... and even had the fortunate luck to see and hear proper "old skool" Eastenders play a tune on the "old Joanna" ( ones that where born in hearing distance of the Bow Bells ) ...... The people that use to frequent them, where really welcoming, and a as Dutchman and foreigner myself ( I lived here nearly 30 jears, and I feel part of London, I now lived here longer than in Holland ) I can truly say, there was no better pub, than an Eastend pub .... I learned more from the kind people in them pubs, than whatever they try to teach me at school ..... but as with most of those old boys and girls, the pubs have now gone too ..... it just breaks my heart .... Living in Romford, I can see that even around our way ... diversity has ruined most of that as well ..... and yes I am a Brexiteer, as Europe is an un-Democratic monster, that ruined many cities in the UK ....... as for the" Old Eastend" ... I'll miss it ... every day .....

Yep, use to eat a lot of pie & mash .... Went to many of the pubs there, I was lucky enough to just still see them as they were .... But within 5 years of living in Eastham, we moved further East ... Seven-kings, Chadwell heath ... and now Romford . I hadn't been back in the East end for some years .... Last, the missus asked me if I fancied a drive down the Eastend ..... Well, that was a drive and a half, it was shocking .... An old Neighbour of ours said once, never visit the houses you use to live in .... And she was right . As for the great pubs in Eastham .... they're gone ... only a few are left standing ( but those are either turned into mosques, Hindu Temples, Tesco’s or the happy clappers get hold of them ) . 25 years ago, I use to walk in the dead of night from the three puddings happily to Manor Park, ...... but nowadays, I'd wouldn't even drive there in a tank ..... It's only those people who never have known the real Eastend, that think diversity is a "good" thing . But as far as I am concerned, diversity has ruined the Eastend ... probably not a pc correct opinion .... but when a 17 year old girl gets stabbed in the back ( thanks to a very lacks immigration policy & that "diversity" ), and all the other things I've seen with my own eyes ... my political correctness starts to wear very thin. 29th of March WTO ... out is out ... no delay, as we don't want to stay ..... Enough is enough ... the EU can jump high and low ... as for the Bells will be ringing in Bow

@@AbdulKareem-uy6hk We left the Eastend / Eastham nearly 25 years ago due to it no longer resembling and or fascilitating the British culture. By the time we left, 70+% of our neighbours where 1st and 2nd generation migrant people, the majority where very nice migrant people, but they did not participate in the English way of life and culture. (And I'm a Dutch immigrant myself, but I participate 100% in the British way of life). Good immigration is all about integration and accepting the culture of the country you move to, not trying to force one's own culture onto that country or the people who live there. I believe this is now a restaurant? August 2020. As a proud generation of East Enders..the saying was...if you were not in church..you were in the other..if your not in one your in the other. Some great old pics but why that awful bleedin West Ham song.........anyone knows true east Londoner's support The O's! I was actually born in an East End pub (The Mariners Arms, The Highway E1) that was demolished in 66. Some great nostalgia here but that woeful bloody song - nah! ;-)

Please can you direct to me any cogent and clear arguments which aren't riddled with vehement desire to insult which supports a single thing you've said? What I see is someone desperately suppressing his childish insults with a half colourful vocabulary.

I worked in the East End in the mid eighties, some great pubs and the people were fantastic, went back to a Leeds West Ham game last season, the people are still the same but the place has changed completely, my mother from Leeds won a UK wide talent singing contest beat Vera Lynn, my mother was a down to earth seamstress where as Lyn was middle upper class, that’s why she won it, down to earth humour and hardworking lass !!!

I love your pics, but could you add dates and street names, as that would be very helpful to me?
