Those F-40's were and still are Awesome! IDK why Amtrak quit running them in favor of the GE stuff! EMD needs to make a comeback or something with some new passenger engines! Fantastic video!
I just love the F40's Bob! I still have all the clips on that video you gave our dad along time ago! I play it every once and a while to look back on the F40's!
Sounds like the horn was plugged up. These were the waning days of the F40's on this train; they ran until 1997 for awhile after the P42's began experiencing issues with snow intake.
@bountyhunter2341 There are no more F40PH's active on Amtrak. The ones you see running around now are converted to NPCU's, engineless Non Powered Control Units that are used as cab/baggage cars.
@DJGENEX71 , they waste to much gas , cost to much to maintain they had lots of problems , werent eco - friendly and their height is a problem , so they made the P42s so that it has more power , generates less fuel , smaller height and is faster and lighter than a F40ph , thats why their isnt so many F40s like they had before , all the F-40s you see today that amtrak uses are diffrent because they upgraded them so that they arent as dirty as the old F40s they had .
The F40’s were so weak thru the Rockies that they usually added a third (or fourth) on in Minot, ND. The only reason you see this one with 3 is probably because they haven’t added it yet or already took it off. And the F40s were actually not more reliable than the P42s that they have now. I see the Empire Builder all the time, it was more common then with the F40s to add freight or other engines on than it is now to add other power on with the P42s.
