I gave up with the Soaps years ago now, but recently I've seen various old episodes of Corrie (70's/80's) & Eastenders (80's) here on RU-vid & realised just how well written they were then with excellently crafted characters.
@Christopher Christos or your nostalgia goggles are on. They'll be people in 10 years time thinking this era of EE rn is the best. Stuck in the past it's unhealthy
Wonderful wonderful scene and great to see all these fantastic characters from EastEnders' golden age back together again. If only they'd stayed around lodger.
Was having a ciggy outside the terminal when I worked at the airport a few years back when I happened to turn and look at the guy stood next to me, and was astonished to see it was Tom Watt! I couldn't remember his real name at the time and just said "Lofty?" He laughed and said "yeah!". Next minute we were talking football like old pals! Great guy!
I would have taken that as a compliment; first off, it's 30+ years later and people still recognize me and secondly, I must have done a great job in my role if some random person on the street remembered my character's name. Tom Watt is totally recognizable but I never would recognize the original Sam Mitchell or Collin (Michael Cashman).
@@thenightporter Talking of Sam Mitchell, I saw Daniella Westbrook outside Baker Street underground station around 10 years ago - she was leaning against the wall chatting on her phone!
I recently saw the scene where Lofty leaves Walford with only a suitcase to start anew. Glad to see he became a success in the three decades he was away from Albert Square.
It was nice they got these characters back for Dr Leggs funeral. I was watching repeats of eastenders from the late 80's on Drama at the time this episode aired and was funny seeing young Mary and Lofty on one channel and them seeing all these years later in the current episodes.
I was happy to c Mary again, when first saw eastenders abit late, jan 1986, when I small , Mary used to remind me of Madonna lol, when Madonna had long hair with her album like a virgin I think it was still in the charts, but I remember Mary, I miss her, lofty and others
I know this scene is about Dot but there should have been more reactions from the old characters and Kathy. She was a huge character back in the day. I feel like she was a background character in this scene.
I’m glad the writers made Lofty do very well owning 15 pubs mind you I could be more by know he deserves it. I can see him coming in permanently at some point possibly buying the club if Ruby ever decides to sell. I can see Mary and Annie popping back I mean they are coppers so they have reason
Sandy Ratcliff who played Sue Osman was very sick in her later years and died last year so it’s understandable she didn’t want to take part in this awful soap now, and I mean it is absolutely dire, and before you ask, I watched this scene as I wanted to see Mary, not a fan of the show now but I was years ago.
that's a lie. Don't make things up. Sue's actress is dead now and at the time of this was 70 years old living on benefits. And the actor who plays ali said he'd never come back.
Its nice that the actor and actress have not let themselves go. Ok its over 30 years and they look older. But they are both still total recognisable. Even punk mary not being a punk no more. I think a lot of it is the fact they have not really gained any weight.
@@pferreira1983 oy yes I know . I see what you mean now lol I just thought you meant the original Michelle actress Susan Tully looked different. It was pretty pointless recasting Michelle cause she did not stay long and has left again. Unless they are bringing her back?
@@shanefolan9175 Yes! That awful recasting was such a waste. If Sue Tully didn't want to reprise the role then they shouldn't of brought Michelle back.
I don’t want to mention it yet but when it comes to Dot’s funeral I hope they bring Lofty, Mary and and a lot more old faces back but I don’t know how many is left
It looked like Mary was gonna temporarily revert to her old ways and have a go at Dot over Annie, which would have soured the occasion, so I’m glad Dot reminded her why she did what she did at the time, and got her to see sense, for which Mary then thanked her. Those funny incidents involving Dr Legg Kathy & Lofty mentioned didn’t happen on screen did they? Clever of the writers to devise them, perhaps they had a list and decided they were the most amusing ones.
Yeah that line when Pat tried to get you on the game .Yeah everybody seems to forget that when Pat first turned up on EastEnders she wasn’t a nice character she ended up as.
seeing mary and lofty now, apart from the memories, justs makes me want to wallow in eastenders past, when it was actually worth watching, not a load of crap like it is now, i think the best thing that you could have done for yourself, was to probably to stop watching eastenders round about 1989.
Is there no mention of Mary’s nightmare god fearing mother who had a lot more to do with Mary’s punk rebellion than Dot ever did? But Mary of 2019 thanks Dot for her turnaround, just doesn’t add up. But what can I expect with the writers constantly rewriting history to suit the current storyline thread.
Nice to see Mary and lofty ...reminded me of the show back when story lines where better...just think the writing could be so much better nowadays...I still watch because I will always be a fan ...but lately the show is a bit lack luster in the script department...
I hated how Linda Davidson's character was credited as Mary 'The Punk' Smith, as she was never credited as such originally. It made me suspect that whoever was responsible for crediting the actors wasn't even bloody alive in the late 1980s.
Heh Literally just watched the Episode when Sharon made a move on Lofty and he ended up with Angie before Den caught them. Fucking hell. Sharon and Angie Watts. On the same night. Lofty didn't do too badly for himself.
Why didn’t they bring Mary and lofty back full time it will be so good Mary’s daughter could rule the square by arresting people and lofty can help Sharon
June Brown Dot Branning I Absolutely Love Her When She Remembers Mary Smith She Was in Albert Square She Used Wearing She Looks Like Being Punk She Used Be Makeup Dot Was Shocked She Didn't Konw Mary Daughter Annie is Growing Up She Remember When She Was Baby They're Both Huge I Love Mary Saying To Dot Thank You When She Meet Dot Walford Helping Annie Bron She Was Anything She Going Through Years ago She Was in Albert square
How come television soaps, don't have to pay some sort of fee to companies when things like the Vans trainers at the beginning are in plain view? Anyone know the answer to this, its been bugging me a while now. Like tinned food items on shop shelves etc.
This is the first time I've looked at even a clip of this show since about the time when those two characters left! Is it just a change in my perception, or was Dot Cotton always a dead ringer for Albert Steptoe in drag??!
Who's the girl at the beginning who asks when the chippy opens? I cant place her, cant remember if i know her from being in eastenders or something else but her face/voice is really familiar.
