Easter Island Moai Statues: WHAT is Carved on the BACK? | Ancient Architects

We’ve all seen the incredible Moai statues, created to honour the ancestors of Easter Island, known locally as Rapa Nui, between 1000 and 1650 AD.
There are around 900 statues on the island, some weighing up to 86 tons and some 10 metres high. Most are carved from volcanic tuff, which is basically compressed volcanic ash and compared to volcanic rock like basalt, it is easier to carve with stone tools.
Some moai statues though, a minority, are made of basalt, such as the example on display in the British museum. Only 13 moai are made of this harder rock type and they tend to be the earliest examples. The one in the British Museum dates to between 1000 and 1200 AD.
Something not everybody knows though, is that the backs of some of the statues are also intricately carved. Interestingly, these carvings are not considered to be original features. Sometimes the motifs are carved in low relief, sometimes incised, but what are these strange images actually showing? Watch the video to find out.

I doubt the so-called birdman cult in anyway superseded ancestor worship.The Polynesian religious-cultural paradigm is heavily atavistic. The birdman cult would be a later expression of ancestral reverence. But this doesn't entail it was connected animism or any form of animal worship. Also, the red hats are probably not hats but would represent joints connecting the moai to the ancestral sky. They descend from the sky father, and were probably viewed from below as up holding the firmament. The are painted red because that colour neutralises taboo/tapu.

I think you would find the history of Hawaii very interesting as well. A lot of the pre-missionary history is not commonly known. For instance there was once a step pyramid near the Kapoho area of the Big Island of Hawaii. Some of the stones from it were used in the construction of Iolani Palace in Honolulu. Today the site just looks like a typical cinder cone. Hawaii has an incredibly diverse and compelling history.

Its surprising how few people can see that the design on the back of the Moai represents Easter Island itself. In this context look at the circle on the loin cloth and match it to the crater. Then matches the eyes of the two birds to the larger volcanoes on the other end of the island ie.. Terevaka and Puakatite. Then the egg becomes the volcano named Rano. The island is representative of the back of a giant. What is interesting is the significance of the smaller volcano Rano and the birth place of all Moai on the island. In essence the design is an ancestral creation story.
@julesgosnell9791
@julesgosnell9791 2 года назад
I tried doing this on google maps - I don't buy it: - I couldn't find a site called "Puakatite" - Medieval Easter Islanders did not have satellite views of their island - I can't think of another mythology that identifies a volcano with an eye - people think of eyes as coming in pairs - Do the translations of any of the place names align with this mythology ? - The fitting of the pictures to the map seems to require a bit of a stretch of the imagination

There's definitely a similarity there, and I've actually been to both places. In fact was in Göbekli Tepe just a few weeks ago, but Easter Island was 17 years past. It's difficult to say there's a particular link as the time difference is possibly enormous. Plus there would have been similar local animals that could make the carvings seem connected but they might not be. However!! Is there a possibility that these monuments are much older? It's difficult if not impossible to know how old a stone carving actually is as carbon dating doesn't work on stone. Even the pyramids may be older than estimated. There's a lot of mystery surrounding Easter Island and though totally unscientific I felt that the age of some of the statues were ancient beyond what is thought. But that doesn't mean a link to other groups. Parallel cultural evolution is a more likely explanation.
@sharonjuniorchess
@sharonjuniorchess 2 года назад
@@brianmsahin I see similarities between Polynesian art and Celtic art forms but unless we can find evidence that they are related it is to easy to jump to conclusions. There is good evidence that the Egyptians were sailing around in this areas more than 1,000 years earlier. Maybe they took them there?

Easter Is. is sometimes referred to as the furthest point of the Polynesian expansions. They were into tattooing and scarification. I wonder if anyone has looked at the designs on the Moai and compared them to the designs used by various polynesian groups. If they are identical, it MIGHT suggest answers to questions about their origins. Thanks for another interesting video, Matt. Keep up the good work.

After hearing about the baskets on the head of the winner when they swam back, id say thats far more likely to represent an egg basket, the hair idea is far less likely as they represent the birdman man cult icons and the basket would be important in that, showing they had won that dangerous competition.

I had a conversation with the curator of the Kon Tiki museum in Oslo. He told me he had visited Rapa Nui and that the red top on the statues are called pukao and that this name is also used to descibe the top knot the locals make in an annual ceremony where they color their hair red and put it up in a knot.
@christianbuczko1481
@christianbuczko1481 2 года назад
@@ancientexplorer1865 that doesnt mean its the correct idea though. The hair may be a stylised version originating from the basket. Very little actual history of the place is known, most of what is known is only a 150 years old with even the written language having been lost about that time. And that was after the islands population was decimated by south american slavers and diseases killing off most of the people by the time people interested in history arrived and started recirding things.

Fascinating to hear about the vulvas on the back, especially with them being older than the bird warrior cult covering them. It made me looking up female ones. To my astonishment there was one with breasts and it clearly is much degraded by age. However even more so about the name. The dramatically flattened bodies of Rapa Nui female figures (moai papa) contrast with their fully modeled heads. The word papa in the Rapa Nui language literally denotes a flat horizontal surface of volcanic rock, but it may also indirectly refer to Papa, the female personification of the earth in many Polynesian cultures. Although indisputably female, moai papa also display masculine features, including goatee beards and, typically, bald heads.

Regarding the last question posed in the video, it should be noted that no other external people could bring the cult of Bird Man to an island in the Pacific Ocean so remote and distant from other civilizations. The analogies of the Rapa Nui cult with beliefs in hybrid, bird-shaped deities (such as Horus in Egypt or the shamans of Palenque), belonging to distant and already extinct civilizations, are only casual and extrinsic. Therefore the origin of the bird-man cult must necessarily be indigenous. Each new religion develops in History parallel to the rise to political power of a new social class. It's a typical process of human civilizations.

Interesting, most birdman carvings often look more like Tucans than Kiwi's like this one does. The baby one kind of like a seagull/duck. Funny how many people don't know the history of Easter Island, specifically the fact there where native white there as well. Then again many don't know that Australian Aboriginals visted the Amazon before the Spanish & breed into some tribes, reason I point it out is the cloud people of puru probably went there.... Like how South America is the home of sweet potato & we have that here in NZ - Waka blond who has Persian DNA & the native Maori who have Indian (India) DNA. A lot more sea travel happened in this part of the world than credit is given. (1421 the yea rchina discovered the world - look at the ships lost in the Tsunami years & then look at Stewart Island Tsunami years - a lot of Dots connect).

1:21 Those shadows.... I know this is just based on one single platform of these statues, but that row of shadows looks like the shadows are making a wave. Maybe I am just seeing things, but I believe that in the time of Atlantis the Earth was a single landmass and it fractured from building up internal pressure until the crust could not withstand the pressure, and water flooded the globe as the ocean floor was being formed. This functionally was like radioactive decay of a particle and so we observe drastic amounts of decay as if large periods of time passed, but this was the global flood spoken of by many cultures. And then waters receded and left people where they found themselves. Some utterly disconnected from the world out in the middle of uncrossable oceans. And that this process *specifically* occurred in a manner where there was a first "pulse" of energy released, and then a phase of lower energy release, followed by a second pulse until the Earth as a whole rapidly transitioned from a first equilibrium to a new equilibrium, due to sufficient activation energy present. Enter me seeing this picture of the shadows of the Moai. The shadow of the Moai looks almost as if they follow the waves of the pulses of energy. A first spike, even with one of those red head coverings as if tied to fire or large quantities of energy released, and then it retreats before a second large spike followed by a literal Earth shattering event's equivalent "aftershocks." Maybe people who remembered the time before the flood wanted to capture the details in a way they felt would last. And they also carved the circle (Earth? Even the way it appears oddly like a shell suggestive it is referring to the true Earth's structure which is hollow) with three waves occurring, almost as if being produced by an approaching cosmic source of these waves that itself meets a resistance from the planet and is caused to seemingly separate into waves traveling outward perpendicular from the angle inward. Then the carvings after seem almost like the work of later generations as they, who did not live through it, lost awareness of certain subtleties but wanted to make sure to capture some more information before it, too, was lost, and so they did the best they could. But at that point it maybe even like the work of a "child." In terms of, people at the time of the Flood were highly conscious to the actual fundamental nature of reality. Their understanding and perception of reality was *solidly developed.* But, they lost appreciation to the things that created that situation and fell. And so, we had to relearn again.

Those are probably geaneology. Maybe when things got bad from sickness, and, slavery (Blackbirders). Disease. I'm part Samoan. I have an understanding of how they could've been so afraid of their families dying off. To the point where they'd do the unthinkable carve on their ancestors Moai. To say we were here. My Grandparents were born in the 1920's after the Spanish Flu. They had 12 living out of 15 children. I asked why? They told me Spanish Flu wiped out 1/4 of the neighboring island of Upolu. All from one ship the SS Talune from New Zealand. They heard the stories of whole bloodlines being wiped out. The Moai made of Basalt Rock was probably made during a time or peace/prosperity (because otherwise they wouldn't have had that extra time to carve a harder stone than the softer lava rock.

I was supposed to go to Easter Island a few years ago. Took me a year to put the trip together; I'd paid non-refundable deposits, and was all set to go...until three days before I got on the plane to Chile, when I burned the shit out of my arm with hot oil. I went to the burn clinic at the local university hospital--arguably the best burn clinic in the US--and asked them if I was safe to go. The doctor said, "well...you've got second and third degree burns all up your arm, and while right now I don't think we'll need to do skin grafts, I can't say for certain for a couple days. So yeah, if you can handle the pain, you're probably safe to go. I'd say I'm 80% sure you'll be fine. The problem is, if I'm wrong and that burn gets infected you'll need to get to a competent, modern hospital within about 48 or 72 hours from when the infection sets in. If you don't, then there's a good chance amputation will be only safe treatment. Is there a competent, modern hospital on Easter Island?" Although I had the odds in my favor, even with good odds, I didn't much care to gamble my left arm just for a tourist trip. So instead of Easter Island, I got to visit the burn clinic every other day for a month so they could shave off the burned, dead skin with a Bic razor.

I doubt the so-called birdman cult in anyway superseded ancestor worship.The Polynesian religious-cultural paradigm is heavily atavistic. The birdman cult would be a later expression of ancestral reverence. But this doesn't entail it was connected to animism or any form of animal worship. Also, the red hats are probably not hats but would represent joints connecting the moai to the ancestral sky. They descend from the sky father, and were probably viewed from below as up holding the firmament. The are painted red because that colour neutralises taboo/tapu.

So did I understand this right? Some poor lower class sod gets selected by a higher class guy to swim to mata nui,perhaps drowning or being eaten by a shark. The poor guy, then finds an egg, climbs to the top of a mountain with it and shouts to his “benefactor” “ shave your head, I’ve got your egg”. Then the poor guy takes his egg down the mountain, puts it in a basket on his head and swims back, hopefully not drowning or being eaten by a shark. Hopefully the poor guy doesn’t have to climb the 1000 ft cliff to give the egg to the higher class guy. Then….the higher class guy, who has done nothing but watch and shave his head (and pick his athlete wisely), gets painted white, gets a parade and doesn’t have to do anything for a year. So what does the guy who actually took all the risk get? Not beheaded for refusing to do it? That sounds like a really lousy class system to me!

Instead of categorically stating the dates which you declare to be factual and without question, you should really say that it’s only your opinion and thats really all it is. Needless to say you are WRONG! The method by which the caves were made and polished has not existed for thousands of years, it is the same method which is absolutely unique and will never be replicated unless there is a reverse cataclysm strong enough to realign the earths axis point by 23.5°……. The evidence for the real information is within the mathematics of each extremely ancient structure.

The Polynesians are considered by many to have been amongst the most accomplished and intrepid navigators of all time, this in light of the fact that they were technically a stone age people without any modern navigational technology. The Polynesians triangle was at one time a vast network of interconnected islands and communities. In short, the bird man cult could have been a local invention, introduced from other islands in the triangle or quiet possibly have been retrieved and introduced to Easter island via south or central america. The sweet potato is also from the americas and by the time Europeans started their voyages of "discovery" into the pacific ocean, the sweet potato had been introduced and spread throughout the entire triangle and beyond. Some may debate this, however it must be noted that the ameridians were not deep water navigators and one thing is for certain....sweet potatoes can't swim.
