This is 8mm footage of my parents boarding an Eastern Airlines DC6, tail number N3024C, in what I believe was 1959, flying from Idlewild (now JFK) International Airport to Miami, Florida for a vacation. My uncle shot the video on an Bell & Howell wind-up 8mm projector. Wish I could have heard those engines. Enjoy. #mcdonnelldouglas #newyork #airlines #dc6 #aviationphotography

Looks like a DC6B to me. Eastern leased these in winter months from Pan Am to handle the increased New York-Miami traffic.

Cool. I was counting the windows and then comparing them to Google Images until I settled on a DC-6. I tried looking up the tail number but to no avail.

Correct. They never actually bought any -6B's.

@@LongIslandMopars Eastern leased two DC-6Bs from Pan American starting in 1955. Most of the other leased DC-6Bs came from Trans American Airlines (previously North American Airlines) beginning in February 1957.

Another thing on my bucket list I'll never achieve - flying on a DC-6.

The closest I came flying a commercial prop plane was an ATR turboprop from LaGuardia to Norfolk and back in the same day. Brought an mp3 player with me filled with music from the propeller era and listened to it in flight. It was cool but nothing like being in a piston-powered plane.

@@LongIslandMopars I flew both ways across the Atlantic on Super Constellations. Flown on a Convair 340 and a couple of C47 flights. My flight on a Saab 340 was so enjoyable that it erased my fear of flying caused by the 1979 Chicago DC10 crash.

@@stephendavidbailey2743 That’s awesome that you flew on Connies. Convairs must have been cool, too. I flew in Saab twin engine turboprops back in the late 90s/early 2000s (United and Northwest). They were cool planes.

@@LongIslandMopars The trip east was unpleasant. Three years later, the trip west was much better. East, directly in line with the propellers. The back of the plane was far more comfortable. 18 hours each way, if memory serves.

I grew up in Hicksville 1962 - 1972 so I saw all the classic airliners on the Canarsie approach from the South looking North. How long was the DC-6 flight IDL - MIA?
@LongIslandMopars
@LongIslandMopars 6 месяцев назад
Awesome. We used to go to Hicksville from Queens for the Sears on 107. Further south was the Farmer's Market which was probably Bethpage as it was opposite a Grumman plant. I never asked my parents how long the flight was but I imagine it would have been about 4-4.5 hours as the jets that I flew when I traveled for work could do it in 3.

Yep. I thought about overdubbing it in but finding the right clips to sync up is tough. I wind up using the projector sound clip instead so it's not a silent film. 😎
