Croatia is a spectacular and diverse country, but while the Adriatic coast and islands are very popular and internationally famous, relatively little is known about eastern Croatia, even by locals. Take a tour with me on a 6-day trip I took east in November 2021, after which I was surprised at how many of my Zagreb friends - even those with the money to go skiing internationally each year - had never been to Slavonia.
And when I started to quiz them on their knowledge of eastern Croatia, I was VERY surprised at the lack of knowledge. So join me on a tour, and then take the 3-question quiz about eastern Croatia that I have so far asked 70 people in Zagreb. Only one so far has got all three questions correct.
Want to learn more about the realities of living in this flawed but majestic country? Our new book, Croatia, a Survival Guide for Foreigners is now available on Amazon. www.amazon.com/Croatia-Surviv...

Your report is amazing and much appreciated. Since I live in Slavonia (Nasice, I call it Nashville, I hope I am the only one who does it...hehehe) I can certainly number all the answers to your questions, however, I think you picked the wrong season of the year for visiting such a vivid, beautiful and interesting region, especially missing out some other place such as Slavonski Brod, Požega and Vinkovci. Nevertheless, I can only express my gratitude for the effort and passion of promoting Croatia. You must be a precious English (British) gem who arrived in Croatia, adding it an extra value. Welcome and enjoy all the perks while living here.

Nemam riječi kojim bih Vam svima opisao ljepotu i strahotu slavonskog ratišta. Lijep pozdrav svima!

Baranja is a special gem which is often overlooked. You can spend 6 days only there. If you need a guide there, just tell me Paul, i did my PhD there which was related with wine cellars (which are called 'Gatori' there) and during that period i fell in love in Baranja, it's people, landscape, food and wine. P.S. Monument in Batina is not just Soviet style, it is actually dedicated to Red Army soldiers who were KIA during fierce Batina battle in which they helped Tito's army to flush the Nazis from Srijem and Baranja in 1944.

We have as a country in Europe such rich history and culture, literary every street in Osijek has a story, but people are not aware. For further research I recommend dr. Stjepan Sršen's "Pozdrav iz Osijeka" (he tells a story of Osijek through old postcards) and Božo Plevnik's "Stari Osijek" (more detailed historical analysis). Greetings from Osijek 🙂

I hope you will visit us during the summer, especially the area around Požega, which the Romans called Vallis Aurea - golden valley .. every September for several days, the Golden Strings of Slavonia is held, a cultural manifestation that cherishes the old customs of Slavonia, what Klapa is to Dalmatians, that is Bečar to Slavonians. i'm from Baranja, i can't say i was suprised about uniqueness of approach to tourism in Baranja, i'm glad to see that it's developing. unfortunately in Baranja u get 50% pay for same job u do in Dalmatia or Istria and it's hurting local population a lot. so i'm grateful ur bringing attention to this region of Croatia that's been forgotten by Croatian ppl and government. it is a sin. every1 is in Vukovar 1 day of the year and then it's forgotten. i'm a bit resentful to ppl from coast sometimes cuz of that.
@PaulBradbury

I think Baranja has a huge future, as does all the east. People are looking for safety, lifestyle and authentic experiences, and I think Baranja will benefit a lot from the remote work revolution.
@stjepannekic3602
@stjepannekic3602 Год назад
This video is amazing and shows actually how much east of Croatia is unknown, thank you for that. Now, if I may contribute, as man from Senj (not Dalmatia, but Kvarner, also coastal region) who moved recently near Vinkovci for work. Main reason why Slavonija and Baranja aren't so recognized and valued in Croatia is because of ads and media. If you want to go somewhere in Croatia, irrelevant being tourist or from Croatia, first thing that comes to mind is either Dalmacija or Istra. Also, Slavonija isn't doing much to improve its own status among Croats or tourists because economy here doesn't rely on tourism although people here are incredibly welcoming. Also, general flat area isn't helping at all, whether it's in connecting to the rest of the country or it's just good looking landscape. Since I love mountains like Velebit where I grew up, it's difficult to get use to such a flat area. This region has massive potential, rich history, incredible people but it's simply not attractive to live here. Slavonija also gained bad reputation for being emptied in last decade or so. Baranja however is getting tourist recognition. Also, since I like to explore as well, I have to mention some places here that are stunning. Papuk and Jankovac or Duboka, just magnificent hilly area! Kopački rit, Prandau castle in Valpovo, some excellent river beaches like Bistrinci or Kopika on Drava, Ada in Vukovar, Šarengrad... so many events like Đakovački vezovi or Vinkovačke jeseni.

@@DBvideo-s Yas, as pylons, and through the brick foundations there are passages similar to the catacombs, I was down there with my father 40-45 years ago, our pastor from Andrijevaca asked him to check the condition, since he was a builder who worked in that way in the late 40s and 50s. @@PaulBradbury I wouldn't call it dead, but I will say that there is a noticeable difference when you look at Osijek during the semester and over student breaks, which is to be expected for a town with as many universities as Osijek

Perhaps you could visit Western Slavonija once? I propose Lipik, a very small town, but with lot to offer.... The AI learning center of Croatia is not something that regular tourist would be interested in, but... We have long history of being healing resort, we have Lipizzans horses stables, rich history from Austria-Hungary era, and much more from the recent decades to show and offer...

I don't like freshwater fish, although I can eat it. I love kulen. However, I can't stand the taste of wine, and I rarely drink alcohol. So a couple of the "wine places" you mentioned are a no go for me if they don't have something else to offer. I hate the fact that a lot of places in Croatia revolve around wine.

Nice video Paul, thank you for your effort to show the world the eastern part of Croatia, but I feel that you are missing the point of living here. Yes, everything is valid from the tourist perspective but I think we enjoy not being a tourist attraction. Yes we are missing some help since the government politic of migration is in place and we need a better quality of life "not more shopping centers" but places where people can earn money not spend them. Regarding Slavonia, there are two common ways to make money and everyone cannot be "Poljoprivrednici" or to be a Tourist attraction. If you have spent time with the local folk you would find out that people are strong in heart but simple and hard-working this quality you cannot find anywhere in the world as you have mentioned in some of your videos, we have our way of doing things that nobody who is not native will understand :) Cheers.
