I have the md305 and 615. The 305 is loud and very woody. The thin satin finish allows the wood to vibrate fully. I will keep this mandolin forever!

Thanks so much! It’s a couple of years later and I love this thing now more than when I shot this review it’s just so loud and resonant and has such a nice, woody tone. This would be such an amazing instrument to start on! You could start on it and never have to upgrade :) Have a great day!

I bought the MD304. (I prefer Oval hole mandolins lol) It's my first mandolin that isn't a super cheapie xD Plays like butter.

Hey Neal...I may missed it if so very sorry but have you tried Elixers on this? I just ordered some 10s...I know that's light but I have some arthritis issues and not playing out anyway but I don't want to lose that nice woody sound....

Hiya Gibby - I can’t say that I’ve tried Elixers. I’ve actually done very little string experimenting. I just go with the GHS mediums 99% of the time. Hey, I hope you had a good thanksgiving :)

I’ve been pondering get one of these for awhile. Have to order online and can’t hear live. Its between md305 and 505 and the 305 has less brash higher tones. I prefer it and really appreciate your review. The mandolin sounds great!

Hey there - sorry I didn’t see this. Your 305 might be arriving today. You’re going to be very happy. As far as Copperhead Road, no lesson yet. I wasn’t meaning to imply that a lesson was coming - I was just noodling around to demonstrate the sound. Having said that, I should do that one. It’s a fun little riff that folks might dig. I’ve been practicing on a cheap Rogue Mandolin for the past 4 months and think I’m ready to upgrade, not that I’m a good player now by any means, but I think I’ve invested enough time to justify a somewhat pricey upgrade. I’ve been looking at this Eastman MD 305 and the Kentucky Km-250 series, and am having trouble deciding. They obviously both seem like great mandolins, but I was wondering which of these two you would recommend, if either, for a beginner like me. One of my friends who has been playing instruments his whole life says I should wait til I’m good enough to upgrade (like a year or so), but I also hear a lot of experienced players saying learning on a high quality instrument makes it much easier and more fun. Hope I could get some advice as you are obviously a very skilled player. Thanks!

Hi there - I would definitely recommend upgrading sooner than later. A nice instrument is a world of difference. They don’t just sound better, but are easier to play and easier to keep in tune (that one is a biggie) and are a joy to play. Why be frustrated for a year, then wind up spending the $ anyway? I’ve never owned a Kentucky, but I’ve played the Km-250 at a store and been very impressed. You’d love either one! The Kentucky is probably a few less $$, but definitely take the plunge :) Have a great day!

COMANDOLIN Thank you so much for the advice, you’ve convinced me to buy the Eastman! I’ve heard that The Mandolin Store is reliable to buy from and hope it ships safely. Love your reviews, and I also watched your 12 bars blue video and been working on gettin it down. Should be easier once I get my hands on the Eastman. Thanks again, keep doing your thing!

Wow! I'm amazed. Absolutely amazed. That is just spectacularly beautiful stuff. I watched a couple of videos and will have to check out many more. I couldn't subscribe fast enough. Your playing is spectacular, the backing tracks are wonderful and the scenery is amazing. Just fantastic!

Hey there - the 305 and the 315 are essentially the same instrument: same woods, same tuners and the same hardware. The only difference is the A or F shape. If you really want an F and have the $, it’s awesome, but they sound and play the same and you can have it for hundreds less by going with the A.

Hey thanks - it’s a year later and I couldn’t love this thing more. If you’re getting one, you’ll be very happy :) The tune is the Glasgow Reel which is also a favorite of mine. I just did a tutorial on it if you’re interested. Have a great day!

Wow, you are like the Bob Ross of mandolin reviews (as someone else mentioned below). To paraphrase Bob Ross for mandolins "There's a tune hiding in those strings. You just have to push the little devil out"!! Awesome!
