Lots of people learn to play cello in school orchestras. I'm surprised that more of them don't use instruments like this to play other kinds of music. Then again, when people tell me that they play violin/viola/cello I often find out that they are unaware of the "mando" versions of those instruments.
Love that ‘eastern’ sound from 2:44. If I’d seen this instrument before I bought their Classic Tenor I’d have bought it instead despite the extra cost. Lovely
It's actually a riff from a song, it's called "Misirlou - Dick Dale" it's an early surf rock song But I agree, I love the Phrygian Scale runs and stuff
@@rougeandrei9095 actually an old, maybe ancient, middle eastern folksong that Dick Dale was familiar with from childhood playing the oud. Much of dick dale's music is based on middle eastern music. Misirlou sounds great played by a klezmer band.
Adding a little 12-sting style to the mandocello by setting the lower two strings at an octave interval; I think most traditional mandocellos tune in tandem, just two strings at the same pitch. I'd say this is to their baritone tenor what the 12-string is to a standard guitar. Nice, I really like it. I need to get myself some Eastwood equipment. They seem to be willing to make more out-of-the-ordinary equipment than most.
That's is what i have done on my electric bouzouki, for the A i'm using 13/13 , for the D 22/22 , for the G 34/17, and for the C 48/ 24 . The scale lenght of the instrument is 66,2 centimeters. It you want to see it , go on my channel and search for the video " Byrd song treble booster " , english language. Have a happy new year, Patrick from Italy
Well, usually a cello has no courses and you don't play it with a pick on your lap. It's a mandocello in the form of an electrical guitar with almost identical dimensions than the Warren Ellis Tenor Baritone if that works better for you ;)
Jacob Dobtrinth, recently i have purchased the Warren Ellis tenorbaritone, one of the few available for left handed; i've changed the strings, as it follows : A 14 / D 24 / G 36 / C 48 . Compared to the original strings , too thick for my tastes ,these strings set is more comfortable to play . The only work i had to do , was to adjust the saddles , nothing else . Have a happy new year. Patrick from Italy
Just ran across this instrument from the email that Eastwood just sent out so I came to RU-vid to check out a demo. OF COURSE it's RJ, and of COURSE he rocks it! Very interesting instrument. I could have fun with this.
Chuck, i have two bouzoukis, scale lenght 66 centimeters, the strings that i'm using are the following : A 12/12 D 22/22 G 32/ 32 C 46/ 12 ; this mandocello does not report the scale lenght with european measurements, do you think that i could use the same strings as i'm using for the bouzouki, with the Eastwood Mandocello? The informations that i have found on the " specs" are showing that the C strings couple is 62! Too thick for me! I would like to have a brighter sound that you can only achieve with thinner strings. Do you have any tip for me? Thank you so much!! Greetings from Italy, Patrick
@@patrickbuzzo1970 Hi Patrick, You'll probably have to have a new nut cut to accommodate the lighter gauge strings. The Eastwood, according to the Website is 63.5cm or 25 inch scale length. The light strings should work fine but again, you'll probably need a new nut. I know of a company that makes various parts for them online called MOREtone. They sell conversion nuts for people wanting to convert a standard guitar to a Mandocello but I don't see the nut width listed on the Eastwood website. They're customer service is good. You might call them with more questions but the way it seems I would suggest a local luthier make you a custom fit nut to accommodate your strings. I'm sure it'll sound great when you do. Best of luck to you! :-) Greetings from Pittsburgh!!
@@chucksguitarshop Thank you so much! You are a kind person ! If one day ( when the Covid will be over) you decide to visit Italy, you can contact me via You tube on my channel, i'll be glad to give you some suggestions about places that most of the Travel Agencies do not tell to the tourists. Italy has many unknown places that deserves to be seen ! All the best to you, Patrick 👋
Hi Chuck i 've read now ( very late) your reply , i apologize for it , but i did not receive any " notifications bell" , i 've noticed your comment by casuality ! Last November 2023 i got from Eastwood the tenorbaritone 4 strings , A D G C tuning, and the original strings were 16 / 26/ 40/ 60 ... I said " oh ,no this is crazy " , and i've changed as it follows: 14/23/28/42, the instrument only needed some adjustments on the saddles , nothing else. Now is much easier to play . Of course i always have a compressor among the guitar and the amp. Are you still making videos, Chuck? Take care , all the best to you. Patrick from Italy 👋
I'd love to get one of these. I already have a divan saz and baglama saz and this would be a welcome addition to my arsenal with the voicing that can only come from an electric.
N Hey, Nice electric Mandocello, as a 6 string and 4 string rock and blues player, I really like the 8 String Eastwood. My specific Cigar Box Guitar tuning style is GBDG and ADGG. I am now studying Country and Bluegrass. The extra 4 strings will work wonders for me... Thank You !
i have two custom K4s. seen a couple of guitar coversions, Never knew their was an electric solid body version from off the self. What is this sorcery?
You can play it however you fancy.... but you CAN tune it to more familiar guitar tunings, too! Check our Warren Ellis tuning guide: www.eastwoodguitars.com/blogs/news/warren-ellis-series-alternate-tunings-string-guide
@@eastwoodguitarsofficial It's essentially an 8 String Baritone-Tenor Guitar. Why not an 8 String Mandostang, 8 String Tenor Guitar, a 5 string tenor guitar (10 string version too), 5 string mandostang (10 string version too), and a 10 string mandocello. The Warren Ellis 6 string is cool but Let's get a 12 string version too, and also a 5 string version of the 4 string bass, and a 6 string Baritone. We'll also need a 12 string Baritone Guitar, a Warren Ellis Bass VI, and a 6 string Mandostang Octave Guitar (12 string version too).
I could use a demo of this guitar played by someone who plays mandolin, not a bad demo, it just seems like RJ is playing it too much like a guitar which may not really show case what this instrument is capable of sounding like. Check out some Mike Marshall videos of him playing a Mandocello, Id love her here this thing played like that!
Agreed! Let me know if you happen to find a video like that. I just ordered one for my guitar & mandolin playing husband for christmas, interested in hearing more of a mando style on this.
I just bought one a couple months ago! I am going to put up a video of it after a bit here. I've customized it and tuned her up real nice. Ill lay it all out in a couple weeks :)
