Replacing a broken tailgate handle on a Toyota Tundra is not hard. If your tailgate won’t open or is difficult to get a latch to release, this is the fix for you.
This is the one I bought from Amazon:

There are a lot of "Made In China" parts that are identical on Amazon. I just picked this one because of the price and really wanted to see how it would work as a Toyota replacement.
The OEM Toyota replacement handle is part # 69090-0C040.
This handle fits the 2nd generation Tundra from 2007-2013. There are also some 2014 models this will fit.
Check your VIN on a Toyota parts website or here:

This part number is for tailgates without backup cameras in the handle.
The Toyota MSRP is $122.11 for this part. However, there are many aftermarket companies that sell generic replacement parts for much less. I got mine from Amazon for less than $20.00.
If your handle is completely broken, you might be wondering:
How do I open my tailgate with a broken handle?
It is possible to fix your handle with the tailgate closed. Simply remove the 8 Torx screws that hold the access panel on. Once the cover is removed, you can manually pull on the left and right latch rods to release the latches. These are the long rods that are held of the handle by the 2 colored clips.
The other question I hear a lot is:
How do I know if my tailgate handle needs to be replaced?
If your tailgate handle will not release the latches to open the tailgate or if it will only release one side, your likely culprit is your tailgate handle. In my case, I could still open my tailgate, I just had to pull up harder on the right side of the handle to get the latch to release.
You will need a T-30 Torx bit and maybe a flat head screwdriver for this project.
