Start learning the major and minor scales. Start with just one key, learn all 7 notes. This will teach you the chords that belong to that key. Let's take the key of C. The notes are C D E F G A B. For major keys: the 1st, 4th, and fifth chords are major, the 2nd, 3rd, and 6th chords are minor, and the 7th chord is diminished. For minor keys: the 1st, 4th, and 5th chords are minor and the 3rd, 6th, and 7th chords are major. So for the key of C major the chords would be: I - C Major II - D minor III - E minor IV - F Major V - G Major VI - A minor VII - B diminished (don't worry too much about what this means for now, focus on the first 6 chords). --------------------------- Now, you can use these chords to start writing chord progressions. Let's stay in the key of C. One of the most common chord progressions for major keys is I - VI - IV - V. So for the key of C this would be Cmaj - Amin - Fmaj - Gmaj. Once you understand how the chords fit into each key, you can start to understand what he's talking about here: creating melodies which follow the changes of your chosen chord progressions. This stuff can be confusing at first, so start small and take it slow. It's not as hard as it seems at first. Hope this helped!
@LoGsounds
@LoGsounds Год назад
I approve this message, although I would make it slightly simpler. Major and minor keys are the same thing, just with different featured chords. In my opinion there's no reason to shift the numbering. To sound standard major you simply feature the 1 chord, to sound standard minor you simply feature the 6 chord. In this scenario the numbering stays the same, 1 4 5 are always major, 2 3 6 are always minor, 7 is always diminished. As opposed to saying In a minor key 1 4 5's are minor. This is true, because that's actually just 6 2 3 of the original major key. Within that structure, simply choosing to write music around different chords will yield different sounds, without having to change the numbering. Not saying this method works for everyone, but it definitely makes things easier for me.

Brilliant. Edit: just want to say a big THANK YOU. I don't know if it was just the right teaching at the right moment, but this short video taught me all the three note voicings you used (I had never encountered that), and that the E string rooted voicings can work very well adding the open strings (esp in key of A). I also love that the diminished sounds so much more pleasing in the three note form. Finally, these shapes allow for really easy muting of the unused strings. Very cool and thanks again.

@jeremyjohnson9585
@jeremyjohnson9585 Год назад
So you are taking each note of the scale and forming its chord shape? That's so simple, but so genius.
@LoGsounds
@LoGsounds Год назад
Basically yes. For instance, first note I land on is G#. I know that note is the 7th of the Key of A, but I also know it's the 3rd of E major, the 5 chord. So by noticing this connection I now know the 7th of every key is the 3rd of that key's 5 chord, always. So I'll navigate the fretboard, finding connections like these, memorizing the ones I find most valuable, and commit them to my playing. In the demonstration, I'm mostly landing on 3rds of each chord just to keep it simple and working with the 1-5-3 shapes I'm using. At the end however I expand a bit out of that.

@LoGsounds
@LoGsounds Год назад
His playing/writing is great, I rocked a bunch of LAGQ back in the day. In reality, "classical" music theory is no different as the stuff we use today. All of the chord progressions and movements, Melody tendencies, passing tones, chord voicings, everything that you've ever heard in the past hundred years has been done a hundred years before that (and some concepts even a hundred years before that). The only difference are the tones and the general arrangement are wildly different than they were back then (distorted guitars and synth and whatnot).
