Guess who's back with another thrilling project? Yup, it's me, tackling those expansion joints that were drowning in debris. Unlike last time, I've got a better solution - an easy-to-use product that's as mess-free as my attempt at cooking. So, here's the scoop on my latest escapade.
Step one: clear out those joints. You might find rotted wood or wood fibers, creating the perfect breeding ground for debris and weeds.
If you're wondering, I'm using an ancient landscape scythe from my dad's shed - a true workhorse. After a good sweep and some recycling magic with mulch, I was ready to tackle the real deal.
Now, for the star of the show: 1/2" Trim-A-Slab. No liquid mess, no foam backer rod drama. Just slide it in, seal the gap, and voila! I enlisted a 1x2 stick and a mallet for those tricky corners. You can use hand pressure for most areas, but a mallet helps. When I reached the end, I just used some garden sheers to cut off excess material.
Expansion joints are there for a reason. They let your concrete flex without cracking up. So, don't go filling them with just anything. Use a product designed for the job, or you might end up with a crack over time.
What's your take on this? Would you give it a shot? Let me know in the comments below. Talk to you guys soon.

If it stays in place then this would be a good product. Although in cold weather climates I'm a bit skeptical!

Prefer SL1 or Silkaflex joint sealant... the theory is to keep water out of the joint and avoid damage due to freezing and expansion

I agree. This is just covering the eyesore and not making it as much of a trip hazard. But it's not doing anything to protect the joint. It's actually trapping moisture. I would never use this product.

@@aznative_ I agree. Your comment reminds me that I forgot to mention it's recommended to also use backer rod under the sealant to prevent three sided adhesion and increase the flexibility of the joint sealant. If the joint sealant pulls away from the gap during cold weather water can be introduced and damage occur. Hope this helps somebody.

That product clearly needs very specific conditions to install. If in doubt foam backer rod and self leveling caulk will get the job done.

Nature is a force to be reckoned with. I’m hopeful this will minimize most growth. Happy to share how it holds up in a few months.

Cutting the excess with garden sheers? That's not the right product for the job.

Maybe not for an artisan. But for the rest of us, the tool at hand is generally better than the one in the store.

There still a chance water gets in the joint and potentially cause damage..I'm pretty much an expert in anything with concrete and not to shit on your dreams here bro but this is just lipstick on a pig..but hey sometimes it's really all that is needed..but usually backer rod and sikaflex is the way to do it..
