I can't believe people have anything negative to say about your videos Susan! I'm self taught and for 23 years STILL consider myself a beginner because I'm self taught! Worked with oils for most of those years and just now getting to pastels, so I welcome EVERYTHING you have to say about this medium. Thank you so much for your content. I appreciate you and your Christian attitude!🥰
I'm always so amazed by how you reinterpret the colors and it's something I'm working on to improve in my paintings! These were all so beautiful and fun to watch thank you for sharing 💓💓💓
Love the insight you provide with your demonstrations and commentary. I am totally new to pastels. I’ve worked with watercolors for about 4 years. Your tutorials are a huge help! Any thanks.😎🎉🥰
I have been doing studies in different media and wouldn't you know that you shared this today when I am about to get out my pastels! You always bring the light to the party. Thank you for sharing. The interpretive part of your work is where the light shines brightest. ❤
Thank you Susan. The painting on a budget tips and on a small scale are a great help in becoming more productive instead of aiming to go from 'masterpiece to 'masterpiece' with long periods of inactivity between. And it is encouraging that the colours can be blended as with other mediums to subdue colours.
Pic 5 with the pink flowers 🌸🥰 . The pink is so fun looking & just beautiful for florals , especially next to the dark - light greens . Good to see a paper assortment of potentials ! Loving your clips , they are clear , concise & i just love your freedom of experimentation.
Landscapes are my biggest challenge. Flowers are my next biggest. Somehow, they always look wild, cluttered and overdone. ☹️ I love watching you paint. You do such beautiful work. I’d love to see more portrait and figure tutorials. They are my first love and I do them best. Thank you for your lessons and inspirations.
Thank you Sonia! I absolutely love doing mini paintings. I find that I can see shapes better for some reason. I think when things are small you can easily see the big shapes and negative spaces. Plus, you’re not so worried about messing it up when it’s so tiny, lol!
Hi Susan I like how all these are not tiresome to work upon, nd are easily to be analysed aswell. Infact this is one of the best advices I've ever received, breaking up small and then working upon em was a great advice by u. I find it useful in every decision of life aswell, glad to see you teacher. My University exams are going on and therefore it's difficult, infact I have another exam in 13 hrs with alot of topics, I'm up for the night to Ace it. Convey my wishes to the family and patrons. Remember our faith is in the lord and only in him and that he'll guide us. Hallelujah Love from India ❤️ Anish
Amen about our faith in the Lord sweet brother! And your comments always bring a smile to my face and warmth to my heart. I have no doubt that you are going to study hard and Ace those exams! God is with you and you have such a beautiful passion for him and a positive attitude!
I am in a pastel class in person and keep saying I am going to quit Because I feel like I’m only failing. But you have inspired me to try more! Thank you so much. I love the talking chit chat You really gave me hope
Coral, your comment blesses me so much. I love that I have inspired you to press on! And that’s what your comment does for me. This art business can be tiring at times, but when I get comments like yours, it helps me to know it’s all worth it.
Thank you so very much. I'm trying to get started with pastels and this was great to show how I can use cheaper paper to practice. Love your color combinations and I'm anxious to learn more. Thanks again!
I love ❤your art Susan 😊!! I'm in your community too!! I love how you explain everything so well, but I'm still not good enough to post in the gallery for your Patreon...I binge watch your videos 😅😊Take care ❤!
Loved this video, I like all your explanations and for those that think she is too chatty, mute the video! There is no reason to complain to someone that is doing this for FREE!!! Her information is invaluable. Amazed at how small and detailed theses are. I need to watch more videos on backing and framing pastels, I'm getting quite a collection amassed and need to get them up and framed. The paper recommendations and pastel product comments are so helpful. I think I try too hard to cover the entire surface of the paper with pigment. QUESTION- Have you ever used a ground on paper? Like to sand the paper?
Bless you so much! I must agree wholeheartedly about people being able to mute the video. Sometimes it’s just hard to understand how people can complain about something free, lol! And I’m including a video here of where I demonstrate how to make your own pastel surfaces in eight different ways! I often use a type of ground to apply to surfaces to make my homemade pastel papers. Check it out and also I have a video on storing my pastels in clear bags which is my temporary storage system prior to Framing or shipping. 8 WAYS to Make Your Own Pastel Papers!! / Plus... 7 Paintings! ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-b51IXH9AWaM.html
@@monetcafe yes, I will. I was thinking about doing some pastel ground on a canvas board. I also tend to slow sped up videos down so I can see the techniques better. I do pray we move past this period in time when everyone wants to complain all the time and argue. I’m so over people being so negative and hateful. This is by far the easiest time in history for just about everything. Being grateful will fill a life if they’d let it. Thank you for the videos.
Wonderful works!! Such a great and informative video! I learn a lot from your videos though I use oil pastels! I try to apply the tips and information, as well as some of your methods you use! Thank you very much for your great efforts, information, tips, and motivation!
This was great! I seem to have lost my way with pastels, or maybe just wanting to expand my knowledge in different ways to use them, and am bored. Sometimes i think maybe there are too many options LOL LOL I don't know what to start with.
I have framed quite a few of my mini paintings as groupings, but usually they were all the same size. I think I would arrange these in an interesting composition that would create an artistic statement in itself. I like to arrange them and then cut a custom Matt to fit over them before Framing.
Thank you for speeding up the demonstrations. And thank you for sharing your thought process, approach, and techniques. I enjoy your videos. I use Neocolor 2 water soluble crayons and traditional oil pastels more often than soft pastels. I would love to get your take on those vs soft pastels. I think there is less ability to layer colors and achieve textures.
Hi Richard, I love using the Neocolor 2 water-soluble pastels myself. I use them often for underpaintings. And you already have a good idea of one of the advantages of soft pastels… I think the layering ability is much better and I also think the color vibrancy is more intense.
Hello Susan, this is - NC girl who bought your red barn painting. Are pastels chalky? I feel like I can't imagine using chalk on paper ...chills up my spine sort of feeling. I haven't wanted to try because of that. Well, that and I have spent my children's college educations on watercolor supplies. Are some pastels crayon-like or chalky? Love your work..obviously! :) Please don't worry about chatting! I enjoy your teaching and I appreciate it very much. God bless you!
Hi Sherry, and that’s hilarious about your children’s college education. It’s so hard to restrain ourselves with art supplies! The better brands of soft pastels are not chalky as in chalkboard chalk. They are softer and don’t have the same feel when you apply them to pastel surfaces. I wish I could just have you over to my studio and let you try it out to see if it bothers you. Chalk has a lot of binder and not much color whereas soft pastels have mostly pure color. They’re a bit more buttery in consistency. Hope that helps, but don’t go spend a fortune on soft pastels until you try some out to see if you can handle the texture. Have fun!
@@monetcafe Oh, Susan, I wish I could go to your studio as well. It's a little far! My son is at Florida State...still pretty far away from you! Thanks for your kind message.
Thank you, Susan, for sharing. I appreciate your instruction and conversation! I'm a fairly new follower binging videos.... Oil pastels, I believe work differently. . . Do you work with oil pastels as well? Blessings to you and yours. ✝️🌹
I am bed bound and. I want to make greeting cards for my friends. What type of pastels should I use, soft or oil. I want to do local pictures since I live in a coastal area. Any thing you can share on coastal pictures? Also do you need a fixative to set the paste ? Enjoyed your video. I do simple watercolors, but that is hard to do in bed. Thanks
Hello from a fellow budding pastel artist. If you use soft pastels in bed, you will need to pay special attention to all the dust that soft pastels generate. There are fixatives for soft pastels as well. Oil pastels never really dry, so they might not be best for greeting cards. If you feel like exploring a bit, you might consider using watercolours for greeting cards. You can start with inexpensive sets and a water brush. Greeting cards are fun using watercolours. They don't produce any dust or waste and don't require.much space to use. Hope this was helpful
Thank you for a great tutorial. I started doing mini paintings because it isn't as overwhelming and don't feel like I'm ruining a 5.00 sheet of paper. Do you use a spray after you're finished to preserve your painting?
Hi Mary Testa, I agree with your thoughts on painting small!! Also, I never spray a fixative on a soft pastel painting since it always darkens the final image. To protect my final painting for shipping or storing, I place them in a clear plastic bag I get from www.clearbags.com/bags/flat/flap-tape/crystal-clear. I buy the bags a bit larger than standard sizes so I will have room for the painting and a piece of foamcore board cut to the size of the painting. Here is a video of my process:ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-4XD4SezFyBg.html&t=209s
Thanks Michelle! I’m looking forward to doing more watercolor tutorials. I really love that medium. And you’re exactly right… Teaching does require some talking, lol!
