In this video we look at all the basics you should know before investing in grow lights for your indoor plants.
Especially during the winter months houseplants can really benefit from extra light, but knowing where to start when it comes to grow lights can seem quite daunting if you're not sure what you're looking for.
There's so many choices with grow lights - LEDs, CFL (compact fluorescent lights) and halogen bulb lights. Each have pros and cons and some will be more suited to you than others.
House plants can be grown purely under grow lights, or with a combination of natural light and artificial light. Grow lights can also be used for plant propagations, seedlings and indoor fruit trees.
****
I realise I made an error and said PFF instead of PPF (I'm a numpty and my dyslexic brain got the better of me). I correct it when it comes to PPFD, but please ignore "PFF" on the second technical term 😂

Turning your lights to red in the evenings is amazing! I am a Red Light Therapy Specialist (for humans lmao not plants) and I always tell people that are skeptical about the existence of red light that red light is strongest at sun up and sun down which is why the sky is red when the sun is setting. Thats when you (and your plants) are getting the strongest amount of natural red light!

You say ur a red light therapy specialist. R these lights for plants same as red light therapy for humans
@toriandtilly

@LD I don't fully understand what you are saying, but it's the same basic concept. In plants, it helps them grow and in humans it helps heal your body by stimulating the mitochondria to create more energy for your cells to be able to do more for you.

I am fairly new to growing plants and this may be a dumb question to some, but how do I create bright, indirect light r low light with grow lights? Where should I put my plants in relation to the light? How bright should the various colors be? I have two really nice grow lights we originally bought to use with our planted aquarium until the plants were moved into a new tank with the same lights, only a different size. Now I have them to use for my plants. They are the Fluval Plant 3.0 and they are 48" long, which is how long my plant rack is. They are full spectrum and I can change the intensity of any color and change the programming to have whatever intensity come on whenever I want. Please explain how to go about giving my plants bright, indirect light as well as low light, with my grow lights. I am having a hard time finding the necessary information anywhere online and I love your channel, so I would rather get my information from you!!!

The "mars hydro" one you showed, if it's anything near the specs they say, you're gonna burn the shit out of your plants unless you keep them way far back, which will waste the light (and be kinda annoying for situations other than grow tents) and the smaller lights are much better options for houseplants, because you can place them closer to the plant without burning the leaves, which makes it possible to hide the lights a little better.

Thanks for this video! I am wondering if grow lights can cause skin damage (alike to the sun)? Also, do regular LED lights benefit plants at all?
@TheJungleHaven
@TheJungleHaven 2 года назад
To my knowledge unless you're up close enough for a grow light to burn your skin, I don't know of any negative side effects of having them in and around your home. In regards to regular LEDs, I've never personally tried it, but have heard that you can use regular LEDs so long as it provides enough PAR for your plants (I wouldn't have thought it would be as effective though)
@JayJay-ec1yk
@JayJay-ec1yk 2 года назад
If your using white led diodes, they emit so little uv that it’s very unlikely to cause any sort of skin issues.

@muCephei_
@muCephei_ Год назад
I think it was important to emphasize the need to research the light needs of each plant. I saw a video comparing the growth of a flowering plant under a 30w vs 15w bulb. The plant under the 15w grew more luscious leaves while the 30w grew small leaves and at a slower rate. However, the latter produced flowers first. I wonder if this means that plants with less light in general produce more leaves to try to catch more light for growth therefore producing more green foliage... I checked the video again and the plant that grew more foliage seems to have gotten a more focused intense beam...

Hey Chris! They'd be absolutely fine under full spectrum lights, but with such big plants just make sure to invest in lights that cover a larger area (as I talk about in the video). For tall plants it's also sometimes worth having a few different grow light sources so they can receive light from multiple angles and not just above too. Hope this helps x

Hi ! Love your videos. I set up a grow cabinet earlier this year and now that it’s summer I’m having issues with temperatures getting up to the 90s F inside the cabinet. I’ve tried better ventilation bringing in cooler air but the humidity drops so fast and defeats the purpose. I assume the issue is the heat coming off the grow lights but they’re Leds so I don’t think that I can find anything that runs cooler. If I split up the light schedule into 2 and turn off mid day and allow everything to cool down then turn back on to complete the necessary hours, do you think that will cause issues? Or do you have a better suggestion?

Where have you got your cabinet is it getting full sun throughout the day ? If it’s fully sealed glass then it will get super hot it is a green house after all it’s rare your led lights are going to cause such high temperatures like that unless the electric system itself is producing the heat or it’s already hot from the day probably best to move it that’s if it is getting heavy sun

Thank you for sharing your knowledge on this. Personally I’ve never thought about getting a grow light as I’ve always wanted to keep plants in a natural environment. (I know keeping tropical plants in a U.K. home probably isn’t natural) but you know what I mean. I didn’t like the idea of using electricity on keeping my plants alive. However I’m worried about winter when the light starts to fade and reduce down. I have lots of Calatheas and at the moment they are growing well at the back of my west facing room but I fear come winter their current location will be too dark.

Holy shit… I tend to thing of myself as a smart shopper and look at reviews but I never thought about some of these massively produced “trendy” products, that a lot of the ones with the most reviews could be bought and to look at the maybe 3.5-4.0 rated products. Not sure if that made sense… lol. But actually a really good point and something I’m going to start doing! ✌🏻☀️

I made a grow light from a broken tv. They have strips of leds inside that I attatched to the underside of shelves I power them with a 24 volt supply.

Wow that's crazy!! That's so creative I love it. Are all your plants happy under it?

@@TheJungleHaven they seem to like it. The light is blueish white more so than even cool white "normal" leds. The leds in tv's are 1-2 watt range each and there is about 60 watts worth in a 40 inch tv. I keep a look out for tvs on bin day now.
