I cant thank you enough, honestly! I'm 2 weeks PP and have been exclusively breastfeeding the whole time, but I've also been in excruciating pain the entire time while nursing. I've been to a lactation consultant and she gave me tips, and showed me how to latch( not like your video did though) , but I was still hurting during nursing. Now I realize I was just giving him my nipple not the surrounding area of it. BIG DIFFERENCE. I found you video last night and I've had multiple pain free nursing sessions with my newborn son. I can't thank you enough! Thank you, thank you! Love from Vancouver Canada ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤

What do I do if baby refuses to open wide enough to get in more than just the nipple or pushes the breast out of her mouth if more than the nipple goes in?
@alissabrownibclc
@alissabrownibclc Год назад
So if you're struggling to get your baby to open a wide mouth/they're struggling to take more than the nipple this is likely related to jaw tension/hyperactive gag reflex. If you check out my Instagram here (instagram.com/alissapembertonibclc/) I've just posted a reel with some easy at home exercises to help ease jaw tension. Suck training getting baby used to sucking on a clean finger (placed upside down in baby's mouth) is also good to desensitise gag reflex. It would be worth getting your baby checked by an IBCLC for tongue tie, and if you find exercises at home aren't enough to get baby to open a wide mouth then a craniosacral osteopath would be the best person to see :)

Is there any hold for flat nipples. I've flat nipples and I'm struggling to breastfeed my baby.
@alissabrownibclc
@alissabrownibclc 3 года назад
This technique will work well with flat nipples, other mums also find it helpful to use a 'Latch Assist' to help evert the nipples, or use a breast pump for this as well. Some mums also find nipple shields helpful :)
@rauzana5177
@rauzana5177 2 года назад
@@alissabrownibclc will nipple shields cause confusion in babies later on? I've people around me pressuring me on that!
@alissabrownibclc
@alissabrownibclc 2 года назад
@@rauzana5177 Yes they can do - nipple shields are useful in some situations but babies who are reliant on them for longer periods do find it difficult to transition away from them, certainly not impossible though. If it's a case of baby not being able to breastfeed at all, or breastfeeding with a shield, then it's still a good option. If your baby is struggling to latch and feed, even with using this sandwich technique then I'd suggest you get your baby checked for a tongue tie also. Babies with good tongue function can usually still latch and feed well even with flat nipples :)

This is so helpful. My baby girl is 3 days old and was doing nipple feeding which made it so painful. I tried your tips and it definitely is less painful but still not opening her mouth to encompass the entire aereola. Is this maybe because her mouth is still small (she was born at 2.88 kg in an emergency c section at 39 weeks) Or is there something I am still doing wrong?
@alissabrownibclc
@alissabrownibclc 13 дней назад
@@linaabojaradehart there are a number of factors which can cause tension in the neck and jaw muscles which stop baby being able to open their mouth wide. Even small babies should be able to open a wide mouth. Check out this video for some more info/tips: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-t_iYSaXwrKM.htmlsi=F4oqIagTdRUUWuMd

My baby is just over 4 weeks old and I've been in so much pain during breastfeeding. Also I am not able to produce much milk because I keep having to take a day off here and there to allow my nipples to heal so on those days, I hand express and bottle feed her. I was happy before becoming a mom but now im experiencing depression from breastfeeding. I never epuld have thiught it would be do hard. My nipples are extremely flat and dont poke out at all so its hard getting the nipples far back into her mouth and a nipple shield is incredibly painful. She sucks on it but no milk comes out. It just pulls on my raw nipple.
@alissabrownibclc
@alissabrownibclc 8 месяцев назад
Sounds like you've had such an overwhelming journey so far! I'd definitely recommend some 1:1 support and I'm happy to arrange this for you - just email alissa@motherandmilk.co.uk It's totally fine to take some time off to let your nipples heal but you definitely need to be pumping at least as frequently as your baby is feeding on those days otherwise your milk supply will quickly reduce. If your baby is only 4 weeks old there's definitely time to turn it all around though!

@carolinaalvarez3783 It's tough, right? As moms we just want to provide for our baby and when we struggle with it, it hits hard. I tried for months to breastfeed. Most of the pain finally went away, but I just wasn't able to produce enough milk to properly feed my baby. She was underweight because of it and I got so depressed because I dreaded feeding her store bought formula. That formula is SO bad for babies. That's why so many babies on store bought formula get sick. They have rattly breathing, runny noses, digestive issues, rashes, etc. My husband found an alternative that hits close to human breast milk. If you are still struggling with it to the point where your baby isn't eating much, I can send you the link to the milk alternative website. It costs more than regular formula, but it's much healthier than the stuff with corn syrup and other bad ingredients. It's a mixture of goats milk, goat milk lactose, collagen powder, and some other ingredients. My baby LOVES it and she has zero digestive issues, no rashes and she is very strong and healthy.

This video is awesome! So helpful - we are now working to get a deep latch but I noticed my LO is still chomping down in that motion even though the latch is deeper than before. Do you have any tips? An IBCLC said he doesn’t have any oral restrictions
@alissabrownibclc
@alissabrownibclc Месяц назад
If he’s clamping down it may be muscular rather than tongue restriction related. Does he struggle to open his mouth wide? Or only open wide for a second or two when latching? Does he prefer to always have head on one particular side when resting/sleeping? History or very long or very quick labour? Shoulder dystocia at birth?

Yes you can use the opposite hand, but you'll be using your index and middle finger in a scissor shape from the top of your breast :) It can still feel tender if you've had damage from a bad latch that is still healing but the sharp pinching pain with each suck should go away.
