Easy DIY Embroidery Thread Holder for Sewing Room Organization Ideas and cotton storage

A very easy DIY project, needing only a few very basic tools to make a Embroidery Thread Rack for the wall, I think this is a better way to go than using a sewing thread box, as it is easier to see the embroidery thread colors with just a quick glance and the thread colors on the wall almost look like art.
Sewing room ideas should be practical, making the best use of storage, as there are a never-ending list of things to store.
The link to my other Embroidery Thread video I refer to at the 13-second mark is right below here, and also at the end of the video

The best diy thread rack I've seen. Not just easy to make but does the job well and looks good. Well done Gavin.

You’ve made this ol’ gran’s day, Gavin! A short trip to Bunnings and I’ll FINALLY be able to get my embroidery threads sorted (and out of the shoeboxes) 😊 Thank you!

Mr Clark thank you for sharing another great DIY. Did you build the sewing tables in the sewing room? Just wondered

This is great! Thank you for taking the time to make this video. I just started making this this morning. I've never tried anything like it before so it's taking me a while, but I'm surprised how much I'm enjoying making it! Some of my hook holes are a bit wonky but I don't care! Thanks for giving me the confidence to have a try!
@GavinClarkdiy
@GavinClarkdiy 7 лет назад
That's great, sounds like you are having fun. If you drilled the holes a bit big, stick bit of wood in it before you screw your hook in. Like a toothpick and break it off level with the top of the hole, then screw the hook in, it should be a bit tighter then. thanks for your comment.
@bettyodell1056

What was the distance between the screw holes you drilled and size of the main board you used?
@GavinClarkdiy
@GavinClarkdiy 8 месяцев назад
The holes were about 45mm apart on this one, ( sit two of your reels together and see how far yours should be) I have made others 60mm apart, because of the size of the reels to be stored. I am sorry I do not have the size of the board on the one in the video, but 950 high and 650 wide, are the size I have made a few. ( lay out a few reels and see how big you want yours) I hope this helps a bit. I wish you the best for your project.

Gavin, you inspired me and I’ve futzed away with the little woodwork knowledge I have....it’s almost complete....I will post a pic when the board is completed and the whole thing is mounted on the wall (with my new stud finder) and filled with my cottons..thank you.

Thank you so very much for this video! You gave me the perfect idea for my sewing room and it will save me about $60! You did a great job of explaining what to do and how to do it, so I'm confident that I can create my own.

What a great idea. I love how you produced this much simpler thread holder compared to the other one which was great also. And there is enough room above or below to put the number of embroidery thread on the board ensuring that after use the thread gets put back where it belongs. Only one thing keeps me from making one and that is unfortunately all my wall space is already utilized. (and my routing experience is non existent but I could add molding to the edges instead). Is there a way that it could stand up and be put onto wheels so that it could be pushed under a desk when not in use (and not fall over naturally)? If you added thread to both sides by alternating the holders on each side of the board - would the size you recommend for the wood still work? (I have a lot of thread about 200 reels! and that doesn't include my sewing threads or overlocker threads) And with thread on both sides and even enclosed like a very skinny cupboard perhaps using perspex or even plastic stretched on a frame utilized as a door that opens and shuts so you could see the threads. That way it would be dust free, away from sunlight and nothing falls off when moving it. That would be my dream thread holder.

Hi Debbie, Thank you for your comment. First, yes good idea we should have the number of the embroidery thread on each hook THANKS. 200 reels of thread, have you got anything on the back of the door to the room? Just a thought, screw a board to the back of the door. Yes if you used 18mm or ¾ inch thick wood you could screw the hooks in from both sides. If you were to put wheels on a board to slide it under a desk the base would have to be 200mm or 8inches minimum wide, and really should be wider to be stable (I am sure if you did this you would not be happy with it and would soon be looking for a better idea.) I do like your idea of a Perspex cover to keep the dust off them. Do you have doors on some cupboards in this room? Is there enough room to screw the hooks and put the reels on the inside of the doors without hitting whatever you have in the cupboards? Or even screw the hooks into the outside of the cupboard doors.

A very good, clear video, Thankyou, It's just what I'm wanting for my studio too. My only adverse comment is that it is set up too high on the wall. I feel that it would be easier for your wife to use if it could be lower & where she can use it whilst sitting at the machine IE: to the right of the power point, under the lights, sitting nearly on the bench, or lower down on the left of the power point. I also think that another useful hack is to put a magnetic strip up on the wall near the machines, to store her scissors, clippers pliers, etc so that they are in easy reach. It is such a pain looking through drawers for the different tools necessary. Cheers

Thank you I am glad you liked it. I talked to my wife about your suggestions, she said she likes the board where it is as she now has her machine on that end of the bench and we have all her scissors etc hanging on hooks close to her right where she wants them. Your comment was spot-on, thank you for your suggestions.

The might have pre made hooks for a pegboard that would do the job, take a cotton reel to your hardware store and have a chat, it might be nice and simple.

Hi, thanks for this. Very easy to do. Quick question. How did you measure out for each spool?
@GavinClarkdiy
@GavinClarkdiy 7 лет назад
I think the best way is to get a few hooks and cement plugs or what ever you have decided to use to hold the reels. Use an old bit of wood and have a play, make sure you can slide the reels on and off with the other reels above below and to the sides. If you are cramped for space keep things quite close together, making sure it all works well, but if you have a bit more room I have found things look better with a little bit of room around them. This will give you all the measurements you need. It's just a matter of marking out the grid onto your board then. Hope this helps.

Gavin Clark hi again. I'm from QLD. My hubby was just saying that with the taller cotton reels you could maybe cut a little bit off the red things so they could fit. What do you think?
