Floating shelves are pretty popular and common, but most look the same and are too bulky. I'll show you how to build these really easy, strong, thin and different floating shelves that look awesome.

A tip I learned in the sign business, use a dust pan against the wall when drilling holes and it'll catch the majority of the dust instead of spilling it everywhere!

I suppose I could have done that lol I usually have my shop vac there but I didn't want the noise while filming

Great DIY project! Love the single shelves but question on the sizing.....do you think these can be made with a 2X10 and just drill for more dowels? I can go directly into the studs but def need a little larger shelf size.

Thanks! I don't see why not, I'd just try a longer dowel as well if you can do that far in

omg these are gorgeous! Today I made my first thing ever... a shelf! but it's a bit wobbly lol! I did french cleat style so I put one piece on the wall cut at a 45 degree angle and attached the other bit of that to the shelf -the shelf just sits on it and it's supposed to be really strong but mine is wobbly - but I think I made the wall part too small and narrow - I am going to make it thicker and stronger. But I've just added this video to my "2022 make" playlist! I love these! Those wall anchors look interesting!

Thanks! Yeah the French cleats can be a touch finicky if the wall isn't flat, if the cut isn't perfect, or if the cleat is too small. When they work they are awesome tho! That's awesome, I'm glad you like them tho. I personally love these anchors, they are super strong and really easy to use. Thanks for watching!

Nice! The only "improvement" that I could suggest would be to fit your dowels, clamp the 2 pieces together and sand the edges. That way you get an almost invisible join (not that yours is obvious)!

How would you compare/rate those (for lack of the right term) zip anchors with the metal backing to the bolt actors with the spring open metal backings? Better for weight? Better/easier to use?
@JessedoesDIY
@JessedoesDIY 2 года назад
They are rated for 20 lbs more per anchor by the box. But personally, the spring ones I still feel like they could pull through the hole. These ones that I used are so easy to use, and are super strong. They won't give way until the drywall fails, and they have very good surface area so it'll be a large piece that needs to fail. The ones I used, I used for a reason, of all the anchors I've tried these are the best I've used

They turned out great, dowels are such an underrated joinery method. Cheers from Australia.

@@JessedoesDIY Funnily I have a domino and I just bought a dowel jig. I’m looking forward to using it on some future projects 👍🏻 Just subscribed too 🇦🇺

A domino would be nice to use too for sure, but there is just something about dowels lol. I plan on getting a domino in the future. Also nice with dowels is it's something most anybody can get their hands on fairly easily. That's awesome, glad to have you on the crew!

Thanks for the video! How long were the dowels and what is the width of the cut section of wood?
@JessedoesDIY
@JessedoesDIY Год назад
Anytime! The flat shelves were 2x8 and the box was 1x6. The dowels for the flat shelves were 1/2" diameter and about 4 1/4" long. The box was 3/8" diameter and 1.5" long dowels. Hope that helps
@brandenjones3977

@@JessedoesDIY Thanks for the prompt response. How much of the 2x8 did you rip off that ended up attaching to the wall?
@JessedoesDIY
@JessedoesDIY Год назад
Anytime. My shelves were 23" wide but that was just to be slightly wider than the toilet they are over lol
@brandenjones3977

@@JessedoesDIY I’m sorry, how deep was the section you cut off that attaches to the wall? 1”? 1.5”?
@JessedoesDIY

Oh lol That was 1 1/4"

Hello What type of wood did you use for this?
@JessedoesDIY
@JessedoesDIY 2 года назад
I used craftsman pine 1x6 for the box, and a 2x8 for the shelves
@KasumiRieko

How strong would the dowels be for weight?
@JessedoesDIY
@JessedoesDIY 2 года назад
Plenty for this. They are 1/2" thick which is lots and short enough where they won't flex. I'm fairly certain the drywall will give out first before the dowel
@KasumiRieko

@@JessedoesDIY think we could also drill more 1/2inch holes on the shelf side to take away more wood and make lighter?
@JessedoesDIY
@JessedoesDIY 2 года назад
You could yup, but they aren't really heavy
