We’re getting the supplies today for the build. We have alpine goats that are about 4’ at their heads and ~200 lbs. looking at your goats, they seem a smaller breed. We think we need to make it a bit bigger. We hope to fit four goats per shelter. Thoughts?

Thanks Andrew Mast for the excellent video! I made this shelter for our Boer goats and it lasted nearly a year while we only had adult goats in the herd (1 buck and 4 does). The adults learned quickly that they couldn’t climb on it and stopped trying. Once they had babies though it didn’t last too long. Our baby goats were so energetic and just wanted to jump on everything and they ripped the tarp and collapsed the PVC frame within a month or two just from jumping on the side of it. However, the timber frame is still good and now our babies are older, I am about to rig up a new PVC frame and tarp for it as I think once the babies are over the jumping phase, this structure works very well and is super mobile and easy to move around. Less than a hundred bucks for a new tarp and the pvc pipes and connectors and quick work to put it together so I don’t mind replacing that part of the structure once a year after the babies grow up. We have a permanent shelter I can move the goats to in heavy rain while this was out of action but if you are doing rotational grazing and don’t have any young “jumpy” babies in your herd, I recommend giving this structure a go.
@AndrewMast

Sorry about the problems you’re having with your shelter. I haven’t had any problems with my young goats jumping on this shelter. I had one made with a cattle panel as the frame and they could put their hooves in the little grooves the panel made. Only problem I’ve had with this shelter is we had some major wind storms recently and it got blown across a fence and the pvc broke on it. Without any wind damage I have to replace the tarps on mine every 2-3 years. Thanks for watching!

Not sure how windy it is where you are at but for me as soon as I saw the size pipe used in this video I chuckled and immediately knew that I would either need to double or triple the size pipe....then I immediately remembered how long tarps last here. At what point I realized that this video wasn't for me... think I'm gonna to go with pallets and steel roofing.

This is a very nice shelter! How is the durability vs goats? Any horn snagging issues? I wonder how a mineral feeder would do mounted to the side.
@AndrewMast
@AndrewMast 2 года назад
The tarp seems to last for about 2 years then between the sun and the goats it starts to get torn up a little. I did have a mineral feeder rigged up in one but the goats ended up tearing it down.
@growler543

Well done video and Nice temporary shelter, however pvc and zip ties will degrade quickly in the sun….the cattle panel version might be more durable.
@miketrev28
@miketrev28 3 года назад
Thank you for the clear explanation. I heard that PVC deteriorates in sun and it is best to use plastic electrical conduit instead. Is that true? Are connectors for conduit available? Thanks again
@AndrewMast
@AndrewMast 3 года назад
Yes, PVC does deteriorate in the sun. I think with a tarp covering the PVC it helps it last longer. I’ve had one for over a year with no problems so far. You could use electrical conduit with PVC connectors if you are worried about it deteriorating. Thanks for watching!

Great video. Are you saying that when you have the pvc together that both ends need to be 10’ and the three in the middle need to be cut down to 91”? Sorry I just want to understand. A supply list would be good. TIA.
@AndrewMast
@AndrewMast 4 года назад
Sorry my poor video editing skills made that confusing. All five support pvc posts are the same length, 10ft. The middle section with the five smaller pieces in a line adds up to roughly 91 inches. If you made it a little longer or shorter it wouldn’t hurt it.

Hey Andrew! We're really excited to find your plan and have bought materials; just wondering how long you've had this new design and how it's holding up? Noticed a comment below about the PVC breaking. Are your shelters still enduring? What's your climate like?
@AndrewMast
@AndrewMast Год назад
If you can keep them from blowing over in high winds they will last quite a while. I’ve had one for over 3 years and it finally broke after I had it out in an open field during a wind storm. If you keep it in a wooded area or somewhere sheltered from the wind you will have much better luck with it. I’ve since moved on to a different design that I pull with an ATV. It’s much larger and heavier than the ones in this video so the wind hasn’t affected it yet. Once I work out the kinks I will make another video showing the new design. Thanks for watching!

Even that didn’t hold. The pvc just broke after about 10 seconds of being in place. Don’t think I’m doing anything with pvc again.

Have you had any issues with the goats jumping on or nibbling on the shelter? I think my goats would destroy one of these...
@AndrewMast
@AndrewMast 3 года назад
The did try to jump on them at first but since they are flexible they can’t stand on them. After a few times of jumping on them and sliding down the quit trying. My goats haven’t tried nibbling on them. I’ve had this style for 3 years now. The very first one I built I used cattle panels as the structure and the goats could jump up on those because the panels have individual squares where their feet can sit in. That and the fact that pvc is lighter is why I switched to this style. Thanks for watching!
