Here's a simple, cheap and effective way to protect your investment! Have patience and don't be afraid to mess up it up! .06 was the thickness for the kyde, feel free to reach out with any question yall might have!!
No one is following up video with the durability of the kydex. What does it look like after 6 months of use that scratched it up in the first place. I wonder why? Samething with the pvc self sticking tape, never a follow up. Kinda hard to pick the right one when you don't get to see it in action.
It’s more so how often you fish or use your yaks. I’ve made 2 since I posted that video and I fish once a week. So they last but like I said it depends on your use.
Might be a late response for you....I did this same thing to my two canoes with PVC....4 years ago...still there...not worn through...water proof tape has yet to give out...no sealant on the edges...that's about 8-10 river trips per year on each and severe grinding over Tennessee limestone in shallow rivers...I didn't know what kydex was 4 years ago...eventually when I redo these I will use kydex as it looks easier to work with...but... as thick as I can get it.
Great DIY video! Very thorough instructions! You convinced me that this is the way to go! It is a better way than trying to do the same with a sliced PVC conduit pipe! Much appreciation!
Did you have an issue with it folding over itself as you went around the keel? How did the silicone sealant work out? Did you need it? What works better in the long run, the 3M tape or the Goop to adhere it to the yak? Great video. Thank you.
Only issue you’ll have is if you rush it. Gotta work with it to get it right. The sealant last longer than the keel guard, being a guide I use my yaks waaay more than the average person. But I’ll keep doing it and saving money
Thanks for watching!!! No not really, it was just preference. I'll be using the goop next go around though, seen a lot of people using it so I'll give it a shot.
@3rddegreefising273 did you every try with the Goop? How’d you like the Goop? Can you get the tape or the Good off when your need to replace the guard? Also, can you damage the kayak by heating up that guard? I am considering using on a Old Town Sportsman 106.
Great vid....I needed to watch a another vid of doing this before I start my winter keel project....Perfect instructions... and yeah its best to run some waterproof silicone sealant along the edges ..this will help prevent water from getting under the kydex plates
Still holding up good? I'm mainly curious about the 3M mounting tape. I've heard polyethylene plastic is tough to find something that will stick and for that reason 3M couldn't recommend a product to me.
@@3rddegreefishing273 I posted a link in the comments above. Is that the tape you used? Since you had good luck with it I'd definitely like to use the same thing you did. I threw my kydex in a oven today at 325 and it molded to the keel like a champ, ready to adhere it to the kayaks keel! Thanks in advance.
@@TN-fk4sj nice I like that oven idea! I didn’t see the link to the tape. Feel free to dm via IG or FB same handle, so I can make sure it’s the right tape!
How is a material that one can cut with a knife and shrink with a heat gun, going to protect ones kayak sufficiently and/or for any extended period of time?
It can get thin if you stretch it too much. Also I use mine as landing protection not to drag it up anywhere. I’ve since then gone to a thicker kydex .08 and have had no issue’s.
Hell yea!! I appreciate that bud!!!! It’s really not hard at all, just takes time and patience. Keep me updated on how you do and reach out if you have any questions!
Good Job, bought 2 berley pro keel guards for my Hobie compass, poor fit, threw in bin has at least 6mm gap, total crap, If you bought some Orange kydex that would have just blended right in looks awesome in black too
Yea I put the berley pro on my pa14 for this weekend’s tournament just because we were launching at a boat ramp and you’re right. I’ll be making a .08 kydex keel guard this weekend
I want to say that sheet was .060 in thick. It lasted a full season but I'll probably make another video with another sheet that's .080 in thick. I don't see it being too much of a problem but will probably have to work with it a little more to get the fitment right.
Of course bud thanks for watching!!! I’m in San Antonio too! If you have any questions don’t hesitate to ask!! You can reach me faster on my my FB and IG, same name of both sites!
It performed very well for the amount and cost. It did wear thin and I replaced it again. But I'm a guide and fish at least once a week sometimes 3-5 times a week. So for the amount and effort I'll keep replacing it every 6 months or so. Beats the other more expensive options.
@@3rddegreefishing273 fyi, finished the keel guard install. I have the titan 10.5 and used play doh to make a more then transferred it over to the kydex
@@andrewbland625 thanks for watching bud, yes .06 but I'm going to go thicker on my next attempt just to see if it makes a huge difference. It's lasted me since I made the video. But I fish at least once a week and it finally wore through. Not bad for a $5 product and some elbow grease
@@andrewbland625 I'm sure .093 won't be too much a difference. I was looking at a few around that thickness too. Probably just have to work it a little more to get the desired fit but should be totally doable.
