I just finished a set of these and they turned out great. they will be by the fire pit in the back yard on gravel so I put some high density plastic skids, flush trimmed to the bottom runners. I used some timber lock lags counter sunk and predrilled to secure the back piece to the seat base just to over kill that connection. I also epoxied the seams where the arms met the chair to keep water out of those joints. easy build, longest part was urethane coats.

Nice tip with the playing card. I usually just use a layer or two of blue tape on the side of the saw as a thin shim, in hopes it will introduce a gap between the wood and the teeth, but I can see the card does that, plus gives the teeth something to rub on, besides my finish surface. Cool tip!

What a great chair! My husband built a standard sized glass top table for our patio. I told him we need to buy dining chairs, but, to save on money, we bought lawn chairs. Needless to say, they are too short - even for adults! This chair is perfect and as handy as he is, I believe he can make them - perhaps 1 or 2 chairs a year? ; )

Best part of this channel: It makes me think like I could actually do woodworking. Worst part of this channel: It makes me think I could actually do woodworking! I've got a library room I use that's running out of space with off-the-shelf bookcases, and I cannot reasonably fit any more in there. So now I keep spending time and energy trying to think and plot out how to custom build ones to fit my space... and then remember I'm not Brad, so I really should leave it to the professionals lol

She is looking for me to build the planter and somehow work a chair on both sides of it...... Great video. Your back cushion does not sit flat onto your seat cushion due to the angle of your back rest. I wonder if setting a slight angle on the seat support rails to match the back rest would give a more relaxed seating position.

Hi Brad i love yr channel and your light hearted approach. Personally i prefer my arm chairs to have the base inclined/lower towards the back ( instead of horizontal ) as it keeps me in a more comfortable seated position pushing the body toward the back. Would your plan work with the base and back built at ninety degrees instead and then incline the assembly by fifteen degrees by lowering the back and securing it to the sides as you did. Paul from Australia
@Fixthisbuildthat
@Fixthisbuildthat 2 года назад
Hey, Paul. That design should work since the front legs are slanted. So you'll still have a place to connect the sides of the based to the front leg

If you're plugging the holes what's the benefit to dowels over screws?
@Fixthisbuildthat
@Fixthisbuildthat 2 года назад
Good question. It's the orientation of the wood. Screws into end grain aren't very strong. But using dowels you have a long grain to long grain glue connection which is extremely strong
@will4383

Yeah, kinda thought the whole point of using dowels was that you could do so without leaving a visible hole.

Does the strength of plugs even matter when you've already got dowels or screws holding the joint together? I have experienced the same tearout when making sidegrain plugs but all that really matters (if you're trying to hide the holes) is the surface. But interesting finding nonetheless, thanks for demonstrating!
@Fixthisbuildthat
@Fixthisbuildthat 2 года назад
yeah, you're definitely right. It was more for demonstration regarding strength. The tearout was the main issue I didn't do it b/c it would have left gaps to be filled

@@Fixthisbuildthat why not use longer dowels, instead of dowels and plugs?
@karl_alan
@karl_alan 2 года назад
Thank you for asking, Ben. I had a similar question, thinking the whole reason for plug-cutters was making long grain plugs to have a seamless match, or at least have something that will expand and contract at the same rate, so it stays flush over time. Never really seen anyone use them to make dowels with endgrain up before, since it's on the surface instead of in the joint, so strength doesn't really matter.
@bs838
@bs838 2 года назад
@@karl_alan yeah and the other thing is that when I cut plugs it’s usually in hardwood which doesn’t tear out nearly as much as soft cedar
