Plans of 8x12 Gable Shed: (COMING SOON)
I will walk you through the complete project of building a ramp for your storage shed. This specific shed (8'x 12') is 10"off the ground but this same process can be followed for sheds that are higher, lower, larger, or even smaller. I will also show you the easy way to cut the correct angle in the joists to ensure you don't have to do any math and also get the end result you are looking for with a solid ramp.

no need to do those long angle cuts on ends, simply burry the boards, which will create side to side stability, and the ends won't rot and break off so quickly since it's no longer a thin, feather edge. Also, lay down some weed barrier and rocks under the whole ramp and extending it on each side, along with some edging for ease of mowing.

If the shed is under 6" off the ground, an easier and cheaper way would be to use gravel and pavers. Put down and grade the gravel, then put down paver sand on top and compact. Lay your pavers over it. Get your gravel, sand and pavers from a local stone shop to save considerable money over big box stores. I spent about $35 in materials. I had an old railway tie to stop the gravel from moving under the shed, but you could use 2x6s screwed together. To stop it from coming out the sides you can put retaining wall blocks, or arrange some half hex pavers in a mow strip and backfill behind them with the gravel. Use landscape cloth under the stone if you go that route.

Take a look at how skateboard ramps are built. There is no need for all those cuts, and at the end a piece of metal sheet makes the entry smoother.

Use a 2x6 for the ledger. Drag a line 1.5” down from the top to guide placement of the ramp 2x4s. This allows pairs of screws to support the whole ramp, instead of a single row of screws. Inset a 2x6 at the heel of the ramp 2x4s. Spreads the settling load of the ramp over far more surface area on the gravel.

Thanks I need to replace my ramp, which is 30 years old. When I originally did the ramp, I took a router and cut a groove in the shed plywood floor at the door. Screwed a Piece of Angle Steel, in the groove, so I wouldn’t start splintering and separating the plywood floor, from the wheels and tractor tires hitting it.

Thanks for the tip. I'm going to attempt to try this on my own the only thing is that my shed was build on a concrete floor. This means that I do not have a wood floor. I would like to build this but would also like to include some type of lip purhaps metal that can rest on the concrete and attach it to the ramp it self. I dont think I want the ramp to be permanently attached to the shed concrete floor so It needs to be removable each time I need to use it for my riding mower or motorcycles.
@EverydayShed
@EverydayShed 3 месяца назад
Wonder if you could use a large piece of angle iron as you lip. Drill a few holes and attach it to the top edge of the ramp to hang on the concrete floor.

Fantastic plans. Thank you! I’ll be using this to replace a ramp that’s entirely rotted out in front of my shed. Do you have any suggestions for areas that are really wet, or will the gravel/sealer combo be sufficient? We get shallow puddles at the back of our yard during hard or sustained rain

Really nice video. Thanks! I have a slightly different scenario as my yard slops down under my ( quite old) shed (to the left as I stand looking at the door). I had the shed raised and leveled with blocks underneath when I moved here as it was sitting in dirt in places, but this then means the space from the bottom of the door to the ground is about 4 inches more on the left side of the door. Do I just mark & cut each of the support boards separately? I was wondering if, instead of attaching a ledger board, if it would work to build a framework whose top runs level and it’s sloped on the bottom to create the level top when put in place on my yard? And then build 2 x 4” wings coming forward at the base to stabilize it? Or ???
@EverydayShed

I will put out a video on making ramp for sloped grounds, that should help you. Stay tuned. thanks for watching.

How did you determine how long the ramp should be? My shed doorway sits about 19 inches off of the ground. Just want to make sure I have enough clearance for a driving mower to get in and out of the shed without bottoming out.

Is there a reason that you did not backfill the the front edge with the soil that you removed?
@EverydayShed

I would prefer to keep the soil off the pressure treated wood but if you would like to backfill you could without taking much of a hit in how long the ramp would last.

How much weight would this hold? I need to build one that can hold up to 1,000lbs. I was thinking 2x6 dug into the ground for the 4-5 run boards going from the shed into the ground. Then backfilling in with dirt giving them stability on each side, but also adding strength so when more weight is put on it, it had the ground helping hold it up. My concern after watching this, would that accelerate rot? Would I need to reinforce the ledger board or would the earth itself held hold it all up since I’m back filling and using 2x6 for the runs and 2x4s on top? It’s 48’ wide but has an 18’ rise at the shed. I was going to have it go 60 inches long so it’s not as steep with an 18’ rise at the opening. Thoughts ?
@mckensey17
@mckensey17 День назад
Correction. More like 2x8 maybe 2x10 with around 200-400lbs of fill dirt to build up and brace everything
@EverydayShed
@EverydayShed 6 часов назад
I would say, better to overbuild in this case... few more bucks you get a 2x10 and for sure it can hold.

@@EverydayShed I have been running numbers and building the physical schematic ( I am really OCD like that, and since this is still relatively new to me, I like seeing everything so I can see where I am missing something and catch it, before messing up on the more expensive boards ) today and and instead of making it come out 5 feet from the shed, I am going to make sure that on the C squared side, that will total 54 inches ( + 2 inches from the ledger board ) which will give me 56 inches on the C squared side. This will make it so when I lay 2x4 I can buy 7 of the 2x4x10 and make 14 48inch boards for the actual walking part of the ramp. That way it will come out near perfect and I won’t have to cut one of them in 1/2. I will measure out from the base of the shed approx 53.03 inches with and 18 inch height to the door. I may change the width of the ramp though. The door itself is 48 inches wide…. I was thinking if I added maybe 2-6 inches on either side of the door, it would look a bit more beautiful and give a little more… space. As it stands I will need approx 15 cubic feet of soil to build up and fill it in. If I bought from H.D. I would need 20 bags but I found out I can get a cubic yard for $30 at a local garden shop. If I do widen it, I could always get 2x4x12s and for the 2x10x12s I would only need 1 extra one to account for the longer ledger board.. I am still concerned about not staining everything but from what everyone says, the wood that is in contact with the ground, is all pressure treated. Should i use pressure treated 2x4s as well For the walking part of the ramp? Or just for the ledger board and joists ? Appreciate that advice.
