Thanks for showing it how you did it with tools the average guy might have in their garage. I get tired of seeing all these projects videos that supposedly you can do on the cheap but they have $50k worth of equipment
The table works great! Thanks. Here's how I got away with using six 2x4s: Cut list (added last entry to complete the list): - plywood rip to 2'9" x 5' - 4 2x4 @ 34" - 2 2x4 @ 2'9" - 2 2x4 @ 57" - 2 2x4 @ 27" - 2 2x4 @ 54" - 2 2x4 @ 30" to support the top from the inside. Cutting Procedure: I got away with six 2x4s, cutting the 34" segments from the same piece, then using the middle segment to cut another inch off and make the 27" cut. Repeat with another 2x4 to end up with 4 2x4 @34" and 2 2x4 @ 27". Cut the 2'9" and 57" from same board, discard middle, then repeat to end up with 2 2x4 @ 57" and 2 2x4 @ 2'9". Cut your 54" and 30" from the same 2x4, discard the middle, then repeat to get 2 2x4 @ 54" and 2 2x4 @ 30". Install the 30" segments 20 inches from either side. Hope others find this helpful! Great video!
This is one of the best videos out there for a TRULY simple DIY workbench with all straight cuts. If anyone wants a slightly more shallow workbench (33" was a bit much for my garage space), I ended up adapting to 28" depth and getting rid of the front support beam so I could store tool carts underneath. - ($30) 15/32-in x 2-ft x 4-ft Pine Sanded Plywood - cut to 28" x 60" - ($20) two 2"x4"x12', one 2"x4"x16', cut to the following: --> base: 57", 57", 28", 28" --> legs: 34", 34", 34", 34" --> long support beam: 54" --> short support beams: 25", 25" --> inner supports: 22", 22" - ($12) Power Pro #8 x 2-1/2-in Epoxy One Exterior Wood Screws (no pilot holes necessary, comes with star bit). I was fortunate the nice lumber associate at Lowe's did all 13 cuts for me for free right there in the store. All I had to do was a bit of sanding and was ready to rock. Next up, I'll throw some 3" locking casters from Harbor Freight for $5 each, and the total project will have cost me $82 (plus tax). You really cannot find a sturdy workbench of this size for less than $250.
*TopFineWoodworking. Com* is an amazing book about wood working. I took several classes and completed a one year diploma in carpentry at a local tech college; this is better than any book I worked out of during those courses. It includes useful photos and goes over almost everything.
Sometimes the SIMPLEST is the easiest solution. This is exactly what I wanted - A regular guy with zero extraordinary tools... and a Dad with interruptions 😉
Thank you - I am a truck driver not a Carpenter so I followed your video step-by-step and I now have a workbench! Drilled pilot holes and used 3 inch deck screws, overkill I know, but is very sturdy! Added a vise and second shelf underneath for storage. Total cost was around $100-$110 with screws at Lowe’s - not including the vise.
This was a great first woodworking table to build, I spent a lot of time looking for a simple table to get started woodworking with, and ended up choosing this one. I realized after I started measuring and cutting the 2X4s that you only actually need 7, not the 8 listed in the description. hell, i even used the leftover plywood to make a bottom shelf and used some of the 2X4 from the original 7 to make supports for the shelf, and STILL had the extra 2X4 leftover. I want to also thank those in the comments that pointed out that 2 of the shorter pieces needed were not listed in the cut list, and that you need 2 30" pieces, that saved a lot of possible frustration. All in all, a good plan for a simple worktable/out feed table!
Excellent project, excellent video. I'm a 73-year-old first time DIYer, and this bench is exactly what I needed, being on a modest fixed income. I came for the great information and know-how; The music is fine. Thanks for helping out us poor old guys. ;)
I bought this for my friend for his birthday as we just moved into a new house and he finally has room for a workshop. The bench was very easy to set up ru-vid.comUgkxyFZUPFEey-PuqsPMxqaykBhgA1LWxFHh They center support is a little difficult to snap in and out of place at first but at least then we know the bench is secure. It was a pleasant surprise when we saw it came with clamps. I apparently missed that in the description. My friend loves the versatility of the bench. Great starter bench for his workshop and easily transportable all over our property. I wish the bench was a little taller but the other features of the bench more than make up for that.
Loved this video. Most others are cheap 2x4s as well, but they have 500 wood clamps and are building the workbench on top of a pre-existing workbench. This one feels doable.
I just made this over the weekend, my first wood working project. Thanks a lot for this video and the cuts posted with it. I spent a total of $35 for the lumber, and with the extra 2x4x8 and plywood I'll probably add a shelf to the leg supports. This was quick, easy and stable - I got it done in a day of just going out every couple hours when time allowed.
Love it LOVE IT! Great video and so simple for the DIY-er. I am 67 yr old Nanny buying an old house that needs a lot of TLC. Thanks for the video. I will be watching your videos. Cute little boy! Keep him busy!
This is exactly what I was looking for. I’m a beginner woodworker, so I want my first bench to be no-nonsense and something I feel I can actually accomplish :)
Lost how many times your lucky to still have your sight in this build. Your little one was a much smaller number. Safety folks. Eyesite is precious. As is your ability to be able to hear your youngins when they come to tell you things.
This is the fastest and easiest way to do it. Most people don't realize how strong this simple design is when it's all put together. In 2004, That's basically how I used to build my benches/counters. I usually add some plywood on the stringers to make a shelf or 2 based on the dimensions of the height, and purpose.
Ive watched a dozen bench builds recently to get ideas and this is the first one ive watched from a genuine normal guy who builds in his garage and not using 10k worth of tools and the result is just as good thank you
I built this today after watching your video about ten times. Came out great for my first build. All I have is the circular saw and drill and your video made it simple compared to other vids that have high grade equipment. I already want to build something else. Great vid thanks
Thanks Matt. I made my workbench on the weekend after watching your video. For a first timer i was very impressed with myself BUT credit your simple instructions to help me make my first woodwoking DIY project successful. Take care and best wishes to you your family. Cheers Bro!
I don't know how to do any of this stuff but now that my husband passed and I've moved I need to learn. I think even I can handle this with tools I know and understand. Thanks for the video!
Thank you for this video. This is the only one I've seen that I can build because I'm a complete beginner. I have a drill, some bits, and I can borrow a circular saw and that's it. But I need a workbench in order to progress and build more complicated things. This is the only DIY workbench video I've found that a true beginner could make.
This hit the mark. Spruced up the garage a bit with some old used lumber and plywood I had laying around. Didn't take long and sturdy enough for what I need, great vid!
I just built a similar table yesterday myself. On the bottom, I put this side braces inside the legs, then added one long brace between them down the middle, finally slide and screwed in a 1/4" piece of plywood. Made a nice storage shelf for some lightweight stuff. I could have gone with thicker plywood, but I didn't want to add a bunch of extra weight.
For my basic skill level, being a newbie, this doesn't seem intimidating. This is not say that you didn't work hard on this. Thank you and I appreciate you posting. I'm making it for my shed!!
Thanks Matt! I am a creator as well and needed to build 2 simple workbenches for my glass panel projects and this was simple and cheap to make with the tools I had. Although this video is from 2017 it is still adding value.
This is exactly what I would do. Use my tablesaw as a table for my circular!!! I've been looking for a simple table to build and this is perfect. I'm going to make this and put caster on it. Great job!! Thanks so much!
I was on my way to the hardware store to make one, someone was throwing one out in mint condition! Gave it 4 coats of varnish, some drawers- it's was well built..
Thank you for sharing, simple, fast, and practical, however, the best part is when you get help by the little future carpenter. All the best, and please keep safe.
I’ve newly taken up woodwork as an interest. I’ll probably have to watch this a thousand times before I can do it.... but I got this! I just don’t have a garage and don’t know where I’d store it unless I cover it on the deck. Thank you for sharing!
Thanks @Matt Mecham I got some tools for my birthday and my first project was a bench to work on. I used your video as a guide. It didn't come out quite like yours but it was fun trying. Now I at least have a surface to try to get better.
LMAO!!! This is first time I've seen this video, and this is EXACTLY how I built my 2 workbenches. Even down to the countersink issue =D I'll tell you what, anyone watching Matts video, this is the way to go!! You will get a workbench that is super sturdy, very stable and even more so if you use 3/4" for the top. Great vid Matt!
I had an old 4’ x 7’ wood ramp and a pile of scrap lumber. I’m building a new 12’x18’ deck and wanted a temporary workbench on the “job site.” Used your simple table leg design to cut and assemble a 4’x 6’ bench in less than an hour. Thanks for sharing.
Great video, I made one just exactly as you instructed. Although you may add to the part list 2 4x2 30”, the last 2 piece you added. My plywood cost was 38$ total of 66$ for the job.
Great short & easy project video. Checking the cut list, it appears you left out the table top support pieces. - 4 2x4 @ 34" - Legs - 2 2x4 @ 2'9"- Top frame End Pieces (33 in) - 2 2x4 @ 57"- Front & Rear upper Frame - 2 2x4 @ 27" Lower frame end support - 2 2x4 @ 54" Lower frame front & rear support
Halfway through building this! Thanks for the simple plans. (I'll have probably spent $70 for 2 of these, but I already have screws), I also modified the dimensions slightly.
After getting this stuff few days ago, I could hardly put it down afterwards [Link Here== *TopFineWoodworking. Com* ]. There are lots of colorful pictures, with detailed descriptions of every step in the project. You will never miss your way using this plan. It was more than I expected.?
Thanks. I just got some 2x4x8 (2 pc) and 1"x2"x12'(4pc) and a whole 1/2"(4'x8") ply wood. I am going to try to build this out feed table for my table saw! Wish me luck.
I admire that you let you son help you.. Nice work by the way .. I'm trying to build one like this for my wife for her small plants to put on top and for the other stuff like fertilizers and spray bottles to go on the bottom.. so yeah .. thank you :)
I'm really cheap so I wanted to see if this could be built with less material. If you cut carefully and don't make any mistakes, you can do this with just six 8 ft 2x4's, instead of 8. This is including the two 30" pieces fo the top supports that Matt forgot to list in the description. You can also use one 5x5 plywood instead of a whole 4x8. Here's how to cut if anyone is interested. I'll be making this later this week so hopefully I did the calculations right! 2 boards, cut two 34 inch pieces and one 27 inch piece 2 boards, cut one 30 inch piece and one 57 inch piece 2 boards, cut one 33 inch piece and one 54 inch piece 5’x5’ plywood. Rip to two pieces, one 33” and one 27”. 33” for the top, 27” for the shelf. Comes out exact, no leftover plywood.
@@ms55938 I totally messed up and thought 4x4 sheets were 5x5 lol. I didn't want to buy a whole sheet so I just used 4x4 and made a slightly smaller bench.
This will be my next project. I plan on making at least 2 of these. Thank you for making a short but thorough video with good picture quality. Nice job!
I'm new to building and such but when I saw the circular saw lined up next to the square I shook my head.... Then when I saw the 2x4 clamped down and cut with the saw I put my head down 🫡 awesome Video! Thank u. Gotta figure out how far my blade is from the sides now
Thanks for this I’ve been looking for a simple beginner workbench build. I’ll probably add some supports on the bottom frame and screw another Piece of plywood cause I could use some extra storage space underneath and I’ll probably add some casters too. But great build and good idea making it level with the table saw I’ll probably do the same
Just made mine today. Great video! I spent $35 but it’s because I already had the particle board for the top. I’m considering layering the top with some leftover vinyl plank flooring pieces from years ago - I doubt we’ll ever use those for anything anyway.
Thank you for the video! Super easy to replicate. Only issue was the measurements for the 2 middle supports weren't listed (that I could find). 30 inches.
Wow, thank God I found a video on how to make a simple work bench that didn't need every tool under the sun to make. It's ironic that most lf these videos showing how to make a workbench for beginers need a fully kitted out studio to do so.
Thanks for sharing this. I just made one out of pressure treated wood for outdoor use. It cost me 100 bucks because I used prime grade and deckmate torx head screws. They have a drill type tip so no drilling necessary. Went together quickly and it is solid. I used more screws, from two directions. It's an easy and solid design. Thanks again!
Matt Mecham I took one quick pic in my basement... Then I realized I didn't know if I could get it out through my Bilco Door. 😮 Also, I realized that I made it to your exact specs, which was for your table saw, correct? Not necessarily the best height for me. Turns out I screwed a couple of 2X4 pieces on the ends of the legs...against the dirt...and it's perfect. Do you have an email? Can't seem to be able to attach a pic to this reply. I was able to get it outside.
