Easy Dollhouse Curtains or Drapes Tutorial - Super Simple Miniatures 

I am restoring a dolls house for the Reverend of my church to gift to a beautiful lady and her daughter and I really don't want to stuff it up. As an Aussie bloke that's into cars and rock n roll, dolls house making isn't exactly my specialty but I was amazed how much fun I had watching your video. (just don't tell my mates that!) These turned out great. I have a rubber mat that is corrugated called Pretty Pleat that I use for my drapery in the doll house and with starch and iron to keep their shape. They have 3 different size pleats so I can do small or large ones and I love it too. Things I inherited from my Grandma that I do use. Have a wonderful day

These curtains are gorgeous. And the part that goes over the top of them is called a pelmet.

Great tutorial. Now I know how to make the curtains I need for the dollhouse I'm working on. A few tips for fabric (I learned this from dressing dolls): Use 100% cotton, silk, or rayon. Natural fibers are easier to work with and drape better. A Clover iron is great to have and you can use it to iron the glued seams dry. Butterfly pins are great to use for pinning the fabric and very rarely leave noticeable holes. Get the black enamel ones (so no rust) in size 3 or smaller. Lastly, a Monojet clue syringe comes in handy for gluing as you can get thin lines with it. Just stick a stainless steel pin in the end to keep air from getting into it (stainless steel won't rust from the glue).

I used to take thin fabrics and draw the shape in chalk and then take "liquid stitch" or "fray check" and apply it to the edges of my curtain pieces. I would trim the fabric as close to the edge as possible. I would test the adhesives on one of the swatches to see which worked best with the fabrics. If none of the liquid options worked then I would get out the needle and thread ( a fine clear nylon thread).and hem it by hand using the smallest stitch possible. I would soak it overnight in a starch solution and then shape it with fine folds using drinking straws, dowels, bamboo skewers and even one time toothpicks (covered in plastic wrap or alum foil. Once I had my pieces shaped the way I wanted I would attach them to Craft sticks with velcro or double stick tape. If you have a regular window and want it to look tall you can apply the valance as high as the ceiling. Usually I would use a really thin pieces of muslin to work out what style and shape I wanted to use on certain projects. I have also resorted to putting some patterned fabrics on my scanner and then resizing the print to the scale of my project. If you can't find the right one in the store then you can search for free miniature patterns online. Set your printer to the best quality you can. You can buy sheets of prepared mounted fabric in stores or find instructions online for DIY. I have resorted to doing it when I had just enough fabric for that one small project and had to go back and print enough material to finish the project or to rework it. I have also printed patterns on paper and put them in some of my 1:144 scale house models.

I believe it's commonly known as a pelmet in the UK as my dad used to say to me "You can't go out with THAT skirt on...it thinks it's a pelmet!' I did like my mini skirts when I was young enough lol! This would be the whole thing, the C shaped bit along with the Valance bit lol! Your tutorials are great because they aren't fixated on exact measurements and you can up and down size them to meet your own needs.

Wow...I wish I'd seen this before I struggled with the curtains I made for a Victorian dollhouse. I like the way they turned out, but your technique would have been SO much easier. I always think dollhouse curtains never look realistic because there's no weight behind them but using the glue and pins really gave them a more natural look. I will definitely be giving this technique a go. Thanks for the idea.

I am at the stage of making drapes for my dollhouse. I made a pair of rod pocket sheers, but really don't like them. Your video is great. It's a much more professional look and I am a sewer so I did sew the actual drape but of course i had to use glue for the rest. I also made the quilt and pillows for the bed so the drapes are a great final touch. Thanks you so much for a wonderful tutorial.

So late in this comment but a tip is to go to a frame shop and ask if they have any trash scrap matboard you can have for free. Tell them what you are doing with it so they don't think you are trying to get free mat (which you kind of are but for a different purpose). I am a framer and my dollhouse has a ton of scrap mat. You could get cardboard also.

I love this tutorial and I will be using your technique. But my issue is how to apply it to the bay window that I have in the dollhouse. My dollhouse has 19 windows. I'm open to any suggestions that you have to offer.

I have never liked the curtains most amateur miniturests put in their doll houses because they always look way too big. Well this is certainly the answer for that. Would this method work with lace? Thank you for showing us all these wonderful projects
