Pretty sure someone once said something along the lines of, sharing is caring. Though, I haven't listened to that with all of my ghost plant props that are covering almost every available flat surface in my yard right now.
If you have any of those aerial roots near the bottom of your cutting, leave them on and put them in the soil when you pot the cutting. They will turn into underground roots and give your cutting a big head start on growing roots.
My dragon fruit plant is so tiny! They’re incredibly sturdy. I had a piece I was propagating and my son knocked it over and I could not find it on the ground! I found it a week later and stuck it back and dirt and has new growth! I’m so impressed
Kevin… Thanks for this DF series. I grow them also, have had blooms that didn’t turn into fruit. I will try some of your tips this spring and summer. The flowers are so beautiful and mildly fragrant. The little spines, OMG… Like lethal weapons !!! Take care and Thanks Again. Debbie in N. Central Texas !
Since I’ve never had my questions answered here even after subscribing etc…. You need to pollinate with a non sterile version. I had the same thing happen to me . That variety bloomed but didn’t become fruit ….needed non sterile pollen. There’s other videos about self pollination
Since the pandemic I decided to start a garden and spend hours watching RU-vid videos. I have several favorites but I must say Kevin you are my #1 go to for information. I have read your book and you make everything so clear that even a novice can comprehend everything. I am 73 and have a little trouble hearing some of the shows, but voice is marvelous and clear as a bell. Thank you so much for all you do.
Omg, this is so helpful. I was given some last year and I had no clue how to take care of them. I’m so excited now. Do you have a video on what to fertilize them with? Thanks again.
Bought your book I love it! So i propagated (or tried to) a snake plant hahaha......so now I have what appears to be a squash plant growing I'm blown away at what's going on hahaha.
I bought a yellow and a purple dragon fruit, and I'm so excited to them ripened right off the vine. I think they're bland in the store but I've heard they are so much tastier when you grow them. But, like, isn't everything? Haha
When I first moved into my spot there was a 20'+ tall dragon fruit growing over and through a fruitless olive tree, an avocado tree, and an avocado stump. Took me several weeks to clear the entire jungle. I'm probably going to experiment using tall avocado stumps as a base trellis for these, and see if I can recreate an avocado dragon fruit symbiance. 🤣
Kevin: congrats on the house. So pumped for you. When propagating, how do you know which plants need drying out before replanting versus those that can just be thrust back into the soil right after pruning? Also, is rooting hormone only appropriate for wet propagation?
General rule of thumb I use is for cacti/succulents / LARGE cuts, let callous. soft-tissue cuttings, like basil etc, immediately into water. rooting hormone works in most situations, but is never 100% necessary
@@marysuarez3934 they need lots of water all through fruiting and growing. Mine had dropped a couple like that due to ants or other pests and its best to take a paintbrush and hand polinate for the best bet. Keep it in the freezer after, the paintbrush
Thank you for the video! I have 4 cuttings and just gave my friend 1. Lots of small stems came out to the side. Should I try to tie them to the post now or wait a little longer. The growths are about 6 inches to a foot long. BTW, I saw my local Home Depot in Hayward selling this size for $14.99 each pot but they don’t look good and healthy thou.
Thank you!! We have drogon fruit trees growing up near the roof already but havent given us any fruit at all. Maybe its time to do this propagation. Thanks
Hi I have my cuttings outside. They are about 7-8 inches and they need to root still.. I have them outside in a 20-25 gallon pot.. I live in California and its very hot rn passing 100 F°. They are in the shadow not directly to sun. Should I put them inside the house?
I have some cuttings I want to plant but I watch you and you say plant about 2 inches deep but the "Dragon Fruit God" you did a video with a few months ago says to only plant it 1/2 inch deep. Is there a reason for the differences in instructions that I am not seeing in the video? Thank you.
Hey, Kevin, just browsing you tube and got to your channel, I’m from South Texas and got interested now with dragon fruits. I believe it can survive with our hot weather here, what do you think? I gonna watch all your videos and learn how to propagate them. Thanks for the videos.
Hi can you pls help my dragon fruits the flowers have come off but a day after it started getting black spots. Is this normal and will the fruit be ruin once it is ready to harvest? Could it be heat wave?
Idk how you successfully propagate plants. I tried it for a kaffir lime leaves & it didn't grow any root ☹ trimmed the stem cuz it's so hardy right put in a small cup of water & near sunlight and no roots...
Hi Kevin My mom watched your channel she love dragon fruit I was wondering if you give her some of the plant so she can try grow them. We will paid for shipping? Thank you
Where do I get a cutting from to experiment of my own. I would like to get a self pollinating variety. Can you suggest some good varieties to chose for Texas, zone 8-9. Your videos are informative and educative. Thanks.
The first one you planted in this video you left the connecting stem attached. And in another video you cut it off, saying it was better to do it that way. Confusing.
Do you ever use liquid fertilizers in the garden or only soil amendments? I always see you watering straight from the hose and get jealous because I live in an apartment without a faucet in the backyard and it takes me 15-16 trips to the bathtub in the morning to fill up my watering can. I do take this chance however to fertilize my water at least once a week with Fox Farms or VF-11 before feeding specific plants such as cucumbers, tomatoes, peppers and peas. I'd like to see a video where you talk specifically about the fertilizers you use and for what.
hey man after the initial watering do you wait a good month or so before starting to water regularly? Or do you start watering regularly pretty much as soon as youve planted?
Dragonfruit isnt actually a succulent although it looks like it. It's actually a tropical fruit which is heat/drought tolerant, but it actually loves water. That being said don't down your new cuttings :)
It’s a succulent. In fact, it’s a cactus. But it isn’t a desert cactus. Its native habitat is tropical rain forests of Central America and South America.
Give them to me to take back to the future. Dragon fruit have gone extinct. I sure hope you’re not really tearing down the “shed”, or I’ll never get back to my time. Gotta go, I’ve said too much 🤫 ⏰ 🚀 🏠
Thanks for the great dragon fruit videos, Kevin! Just saw you had a book today and bought it on Amazon and I'm looking forward to reading it this week! I noticed on an earlier video you cut the stem off about an inch up, as you said it wouldn't root well, but in the first one you planted on this video, you just planted it with the stem. Did you learn new information between the videos? What's the best way to plant it that you know of? Chop the stem up about an inch and let it heal over for 3 or so days before planting, or plant it with the little stem intact? Thanks again!
Nice! We've been able to propagate well but not once getting them to flower. I think the pruning is going to make the difference as I've been to scared to trim back anything. Thank you for the tip!
Here’s a tip! Cuttings with aerial roots will convert them into ground roots, skip the whole rooting process and you can already have a semi established root system
So glad I saw this. I just planted five today and got a couple wrong. Now I’ve turned them around. Appreciate you taking the guesswork out if it! Cheers from Australia 🇦🇺
After cutting through flesh it’s good to coat in cinnamon, natural antiseptic, it’s also key time to angle cut to main stem to expose 1/2” for better rooting
Nice! Why didn't you do a flesh to stem cut on middle cuttings of the branches? I think it leads to less rot. As long as you don't overwater, they should root fine. Also rooting hormone works too in my experience. Good luck moving the mother plant :)
I JUST got a dragon fruit plant yesterday and watched your entire series on it. I thought my you tube subscription list was messing up, showing me an old video of yours! Thanks for the update!
