PSA: Graphics card troubleshooting is a complicated process. These 3 fixes for 3 common hardware problems are what has worked for me MANY times. There are many other possible problems related to drivers, firmware, and software, which this video doesn't address. This is mostly about the common user fixable hardware issues that can be done relatively easily at home. If you're unsure of why your card is having issue, have it serviced by a professional.
Today we're going to be talking about broken graphics cards and how to fix them. There are lots of ways a graphics card can break.
PROBLEM 1
The fans break, or get way too loud. Like they start sounding like the clanky rusty old air conditioner in my mom's bedroom window, but it's coming from your computer.
PROBLEM 2
The card seems to work fine, but it crashes whenever it is under load, like while you're playing a game.
PROBLEM 3
Artifacts. The video card appears to be working, but it's outputting a signal that's all garbled and ugly
If these are happening to you, DON'T THROW OUT THAT GPU! You can FIX IT believe it or not. And I"ll show you how to deal with each of these problems. Right. Now.
Right after a Diet Rootbeer break.

Brother, I want to thank you. For months, my 3070 fans would go insane, and I would get a black screen under heavy load. The only way I could fix it was by turning the settings of the games down. Today, I checked my thermal paste because I came across your video, and it was dry and crusted. I replaced it with Arctic MX-6 ULTIMATE Performance paste, and the problem is gone! once again, many, many thanks for this!

These blackscreen fan overdrive crashes are what I've been experiencing, but what's weird is that it isn't necessarily under heavy load but often caused by specific segments in specific games. Often when I open certain menus. The temps are always fine too from what I've seen. Could that still be a problem with thermal paste? I've tried everything on the software side by this point; repairing windows, clean-wiping GPU drivers and reinstalling them. updating bios, repairing windows files, cleaning the pc, checking for loose cables (which I didn't notice any) etc. , no dice. I've been at this for months and just completely clueless at this point.
@TechDweeb

Yes it could still be a problem with the thermal paste. It's such a cheap and quick thing to try and it so often fixes these sort of issues, even if it doesn't SEEM like that would be the problem. Also I'd highly recommend trying the GPU in a different PC if you can, and see if the issue happens there - if it does, then you'll know it's a hardware issue with the GPU. If not, then you'll know it could be specific to your hardware (and it could be any number of things, like a PSU problem for instance). It's hard to give you a once-size-fits-all approach but if it were me I'd definitely be repasting it as a first step.

@@999madrush I've felt too burned out on trying to fix it since, so sadly not yet. For me it always seems to have to do with loading. I noticed when I went into the hub area in Code Vein for the first time the PC did the thing, and I feel like it has to do with the game loading such a detailed area for the first time. Another weird thing for me is the crafting menu in Deeprock Galactic and the Materia screen in FF7, specifically the transition animation. It's always those kinds of things, some games just run without flaw. One thing I also noticed though is that my gpu driver tends to start having problems a couple of weeks after I've last updated, it's almost like the driver itself deteriorates over time. Maybe it's a software issue after all. I'm no expert but I think I can rule out a PSU issue at least somewhat. My old PC had a weak PSU that would shut the entire PC off during demanding spikes in game graphics, usually particle effects because they're very unoptimized. In my current case it's just the screen turning black and the fans going overdrive, doesn't really seem like the PSU is failing if the computer is making fans go into overdrive.

Had a glitching GTX660 OEM with artifacts, so it was semi-working. Worked a 100 % of the time with basic Microsoft driver, worked around 25 % of the time with proper drivers. Baked it at 375 Fahrenheit (190 Celsius) for 10 minutes, works so far. I don't see a performance difference at this state, but it did start up with no crashing, and instead of going to artifacts after installing the drivers, it just installed the drivers, even played something, and it's alive. I think doing this to a completely dead card would be a waste of time, but if you got one that's artifacting, it might be worth a shot. I'll update this if something happens.

My brother gpu is a Amd Radeon HD 7770, and when ever we put it on a motherboard the fan goes max power spinning and gets very hot when booting up, and the monitor wouldn't recognize it connect. So does this qualifies for your 3 ways to fix?
@TechDweeb

Probably not, but possibly. The oven method is a last ditch effort. When you've exhausted all other possibilities, there's a chance it might fix what is wrong. I honestly don't think it would work in your situation, since you're not getting any video at all, it sounds like there is something genuinely broken like a capacitor that this probably wouldn't fix, but I would try it anyways if it was my card and I had no other troubleshooting options

Hey, I’ve tried your fixes as I have a problem with my 1080. What happens is the screen goes black and the GPU starts making a loud weird coil whine noise at the exact same time, I have to turn the PSU off and back in order to get an image back. But this happens within a minute of starting my computer, or sometimes even seconds. Any tips as to what it could be?
@TechDweeb
@TechDweeb 2 года назад
It sounds like a thermal crashing issue, although you say you've tried the fixes so I assume you've repasted it. Are you able to get far enough to enable some hardware monitoring to see the temperatures? One thing I would be curious about is if you could try it in another PC as there may be a PSU or issue with another component.

@@TechDweeb tried it with 2 different PSUs in different computers. Same thing. Also the fans starts spinning at 100% as soon as it happens, and seems like they’re connected to the coil whine somehow as if I put my finger on to stop I them the coil whine sounds less aggressive. As for the thermal issue the GPU seems to remain at around 40 Celsius as I’ve tested with a proper thermometer, that is on both the memory and processor

I have this same problem however it’s when I’m playing games. It runs fine when doing normal processes but sometimes the screen will go black and start making a building loud noise and I have to switch the PSU off. Idk if it’s cause my hardware is a little older than the graphics card and therefore it’s bottlenecked or if it’s because I didn’t thermal paste my card I just took it out the box when I bought it. No idea.

Yesterday I was playing a game and suddenly the screen went black and after about 20 seconds a disconnection sound (maybe it's from the GPU) disconnected. I restarted the PC to see if the problem was solved, but since then the screen is still black (no signal) and the fans are at 100% without stopping. There was also a constant beep. I restarted it again and the beep disappeared, it only makes a beep but I still have the same problem. The gpu temperature was 75 to 80c, I changed the thermal paste on the cpu and did a clean on the graphics card days ago because I was having problems with the temperature. It seems that when you removed the graphics card, the fans are working normally. There are no connection problems with the keyboard and mouse, just that the fans work at 100% when the GPU is connected. I also changed the motherboard battery but the problem persists. Is the problem due to the GPU? Or should I also check the ram and the power supply?.
@TechDweeb
@TechDweeb 2 года назад
That hints that something is fried on the GPU. I'd suggest you try it in a different PC if you can. If it still doesn't work in the other PC, then it's probably dead, and if you can't get it professionally repaird then baking it in the oven would be a last ditch effort to bring it back to life.
@interstellarlapisthecccp4946
My computer keeps black screening and putting the fans on blast; last time I checked which fans were spinning and it was indeed the GPU fans. The problem is my GPU is not overheating. As soon as I turned my computer back a few seconds later it was giving me readings of around 32 C and has stayed around there since I've been monitoring it. This problem happened twice when I was gaming, but also three or four times when I wasn't really doing anything but browsing the internet. I didn't have that many tabs open, maybe like 7 at most and I was watching youtube one time and another I just left the computer alone with a few tabs open while it was downloading files. Are you sure this is a GPU problem and not a PSU issue? I'm checking my GPU temps again and finding it hard to believe it's overheating since it's currently sitting at 29 C.
@TechDweeb
@TechDweeb Год назад
That sounds like the GPU is crashing, even though it isn't overheating. It could be a number of things. The main first step would be to try it in another system, if it still crashes there then you'll know it's your hardware (and some of the repasting or baking tips in this vid might solve it). However, if it's not happening in the other system then you'll know that it's an issue with your software, in which case a good step would be to remove all your old drivers (using the tool DDU - make sure you're in safe mode) and then download and install them fresh. That works most of the time for software specific problems. Good luck!

I have a 2080 GeForce Rtx and lately it has been crashing mid game or even a little after start up of call of duty. It just loses signal to my hdmi then I hear some fans getting noisy right when that happens. Temps never get above 75 ☹️
@TechDweeb
@TechDweeb 2 года назад
I would still check the thermal paste. There are two temperature sensors, an overall sensor and a hotspot junction sensor, the temperature that's usually shown in monitoring software like MSI afterburner is the overall temperature but that junction temperature is what causes the card to forcibly crash as a failsafe. I've heard of people undervolting their cards to prevent crashes but for most people replacing the paste does the trick. Good luck!

I checked out my new PCs motherboard and it says it is compatible. The gpu worked in my last pc. (Issue with the old one was the cpu was to weak for modern games). That does sound like an overheating problem. Does it only happen with RU-vid? I'd suggest you try runing a GPU benchmark like Unreal Valley. If it does the same thing while running that, then I'd suspect a heat issue, and the thermal paste tip from my vid would probably help out. If you have the ability to test the card on a different PC to figure out if it's a problem in the GPU or in your system, that would help you narrow down the problem.

Oh I suppose one more thing you could try would be seeing if you can pull the vbios off the card. There is a piece of software called NV flash for NVIDIA cards, but I know there is an equivalent one for AMD cards. There's a chance the vbios on the card is corrupted. It's possible that it will be detected by the vBIOS flashing utility. If that's the case, then you might be able to find the BIOS for your card online and Flash it. Then you still have a thermal problem somewhere. If you download a hardware monitor you might be able to isolate it. If the temp goes above 90 on the GPU or the hotspot, you know it's an issue with the cooling on the GPU itself, but if the memory on the vram goes too high then you'll know it's a problem with them, and in that case getting some separate thermal pads and heatsinks for the memory modules on the card might help (if your stock cooler allows it of course).

You really need to try it on a different computer, to determine if it's a problem with the card or your PC. That's the most important troubleshooting step. If it was an older card I'd suggest the thermal paste, but since it's newer I doubt that'd be what's wrong. If it does the same behavior on another computer, then you'll know it's the card. If it's new then you should be under warranty, if you can isolate the problem to the card hardware then getting a warranty replacement should be simple. Good luck!
@TechDweeb
@TechDweeb 2 года назад
Now that I think about it, it still might be a thermal paste issue. I've heard of people in the past with the same problem, even though it's a brand new card, the thermal paste was insufficient. What I'd suggest if you can't try it in another computer is monitor the temperatures with a tool like MSI afterburner. If the temperatures rocket up to 90+ degrees before the crash, then you'll know it's a thermal issue, and the most likely culprit is the thermal paste & cooler mounting.

Ehh, I have a problem when I'm playing games my GPU would go black screen somewhere mid game and the fan speed will go full speed during the black screen, I know one thing that's for sure, is that my GPU is not overheating as I've also checked the thermal/repasted
@TechDweeb

It's still likely a thermal issue, even though you've checked the thermals there still is likely an issue somewhere that's not being reported by the sensors. I had this happen on a GTX 770, the temperatures looked fine from the sensors, but it was still crashing under load. Repasting fixed it. If you've already repasted the only other suggestion I have would be to get some thermal pads for the memory modules to help them cool from the heatsink. Other than that, you might be out of luck :/

First step is to try it in another system to help you determine if it's an issue with the card itself or some issue with your other hardware or settings, and if the issue happens on the 2nd PC then you know it's an issue with the card itself. A screen of a random colour sounds like an artifiacts issue to me, so baking it in the oven is probably what I'd do if it were me.

@TechDweeb
@TechDweeb 2 года назад
So you've tried different video cards and they all give the same symptom? If that's the case, it could be many things. My first thought is drivers, definitely try removing all your drivers using DDU (display driver uninstaller) to start fresh and then reinstall the drivers. It could also be something related to your monitor or cable, believe it or not you can get artifacts on the monitor/cable end. I can't see how a PSU would cause artifacts with different video cards, that doesn't seem likely. I suppose it could be motherboard related, if there's something borked with your PCIe slot, but that doesn't seem likely, and it wouldn't manifest in video artifacts most likely. Trying your setup with different components and trying your components in different systems is the only way to narrow down the problem, but I hope that cleaning the drivers and trying a different monitor & cable will get you on the right track. Good luck!

Can you try the card in another computer? If it causes the same problem in another system, then you can be sure it's a problem with the card. If not, then there's a problem on your PC. If the problem only happens on your PC then it is likely a driver issue. One thing you can try is to remove the graphics driver. There is a program called DDU (Display Driver Uninstaller), you'll need to run that in safe mode and completely remove the old driver, and then re-download the updated driver.
