As a Mexican dude who grew up eating great homemade tortillas. I hate those fake mission tortillas. However, in this application for this purpose, that's a great idea. I think we should have a new segment called "Cooking with Prepared Airman" It'll be like Emerald Lagasse but when you say bang, you should shoot something.

I am not trolling you. I like different views. The best Bush Women I know carry just some corn nuts, corn meal , rice and beef jerky. I like you prefer some trail mix on my left side….but I have money. Unlike you I do carry a beef jerky on my left jacket/tunic cargo pocket. If time is available I love lentils with dried vegetables and my beef jerky semi dry it out and put in in a bag and it’s like your pemmican. We don’t really like to stop moving and are different than you.

I go hiking on Appalachian Trail every spring, always carry 1 pound of Walnut halves, shelf stable, no cook, calorie dense @ 3000/lb, 65% fat + 14% protein + 14% carbs - 7% soluble fiber, a person (or squirrel) could survive on Walnuts, I snack of those all day and don't get hungry, prefer getting energy from fat, not sugar (carbs). My favorite cold breakfast is 1.5 cups of cereal in a freezer bag + 1/4 cup NIDO (powdered milk), add water, shake, instant milk & cereal. My favorite hot meal made in freezer bag is 2/3 cup Dehydrated Refried Beans + 1/3 cup minute rice + Taco Seasoning + 1 cup boiling water, eat out of the freezer bag. Imitation Biscuits & Gravy = 1 packet Ramen broken into small pieces (don't use seasoning packet) + 1/2 package Pioneer Country Gravy + Bacon pieces + 1 cup boiling water. Grits & Bacon = 2 packets instant grits + Bacon pieces + 1 cup boiling water. Usually meat & cheese for supper, an 8oz block of sharp cheddar (or Parmesan) keeps a few days, meat is usually precooked bacon, salami, pepperoni, dried sausage, jerky. Also, peanut butter (like that Skippy u have) gets into bloodstream immediately and provides instant energy due to the fat & sugar, when I am hiking up a mountain, tired and cannot take another step, about 5-6 tablespoon's worth of Skippy gives me instant energy to make it up the mountain.

great recommendations! Homemade beef jerky (venison/elk jerky) is immesurably better for long term storage than store bought stuff (it will go moldy). I make my own regularly and have eaten it a full year after drying it. Would i recommend this to most people, probably not, but im a heathen :D Pemican is also a great homemade item that is amazing patrol food.

This ^. There's nothing better than pemmican for this situation. Prior to WWII pemmican was standard issue for militaries throughout the world. There isn't a more nutrient dense food on earth and the shelf life is indefinite. There was even a war fought in the 1800's called the pemmican war.

I used trail bread to keep me going in 8,000 miles cumulative of 50 and 100 mile endurance rides [long distance horse racing] and anumber of multiple day rides of up to 265 miles in 5 days. I also used both on hundreds of miles of multiple day horse packing trips in the High Sierra along with nuts cheese and summer sausage

Some of the foods you have there are difficult to get here in the UK. For 3 - 4 day wild camp, I take dried ramen, smashed pasta ( saves space ) and jerky packets. Breakfast is either dried musli with powdered milk, dried porridge or for first morning bacon and potato breads ( potato scones in Scotland ) they fry up nicely in bacon grease. We can also get small 75g packets of Cheese like Cheddar or Edam.

Mountain house used to make cold meals that were absolutely amazingly. Cold chicken salad with grapes and cranberries was the best. Just add water, stir, and let sit for 30 min. You'd have to stir a couple times but it would shake when moving anyways. I keep single packets of peanut, hazelnut, and almond butter in all my kits. Also do the tuna and chicken packs. A go to food for eating on the move is freezedried or dehydrated fruit. Light, easy, fast, mental pick-me-up.

You can get honey packets for free at fried chicken joints if you don't use it on your biscuits. If you ask nicely, and don't get greedy, you can get extras. Honey keeps forever, so you can build up a stash. Had a co-worker who was diabetic. I kept a couple of packets in my tool bag in case they needed a fix. Extra plus, if I had to take them to a hospital I could say they got a one tablespoon dose.

Depending on "commercial" foods is a real disadvantage. When the SHTF you're going to be SOOL (Shit out of luck, in case you don't know) unless you have tons of the stuff stockpiled. I prefer to make my own and not rely on anyone or anything. We've been living completely off grid and self-sufficient for 35 years now, yes, we have cable internet but that's only to stay current. We generate all our own power, have deep wells for water and spring fed lake that runs the Hydroelectric system and raise and grow ALL our own food. If I'm going out scouting or patrolling around, I carry beef jerky, summer sausage, Sardines, (homemade), dried fruits, Homemade tortillas, I don't do store bought, ever. And I'm not carrying around or leaving a bunch of plastics wrapper trash everywhere. I could be watching you for hours and you'd never know it and you won't find a trace of my presence.

This is something that I do for me but I run a slim admin pouch on the inside left side of my rig up next to my body as a place to put a slim MRE entree like the jalapeno beef patty or the Santa Fe beans and rice. Low effort meals that heat up via body heat throughout the day. Running a risk of having a bag rupture with a fall but it works for me. I also found in the cold weather to line that pouch with a single layer of mylar to decrease thermal loss and to heat them up faster. One layer or even 2 layers of mylar is significantly less noisy than you think especially tucked in a pouch.

Something I do, especially in east coast Canada winters is ( currently sitting @-25’c) is carry peanut butter, honey and jam packets in pockets or pouches closer to my body. My body heat warms the items up and when I stop to eat, I have something warm to eat. I also use the sandwich rounds of naan bread as they can take the abuse of being jostled around. In the 80’s and early 90’s, trail mix and jerky was my go-to. In Okinawa, my gunny was married to a local. Whenever we were going out on training, she made a huge batch of chicken and rice, put in baggies and he’d hand them out. He said as a Nam vet “reconner”, it was his version of LRRP meals that they occasionally got. All we’d do is put a bag in our cargo pocket, and body heat would “warm” it up. Lighter than “C’s” for sure. Better than early MRE’s too.

For a week or less it’s completely safe to keep at room temp (in pack or on body) and they’re extremely nutrient dense. The only concern would be the Na+ content, but if you’re hydrating that’s a non issue. Totally agree with the Goober brand PB&J that does NOT require refrigeration. Used it many times in the field and on deployments. Never forget the dried fruits and nuts with granola as a mini snack. They’re mostly carbs but fruits and nuts are nutrient dense and have good fats. Granola is a good source of sugars and carbs. Also, tuna is gross. Never tuna.

I looked up the split and that stuff is expensive. You'd be better off buying a cheap jar of peanut butter and jelly and use it. IMHO

MARS bars in cold environments are great lol, cut a chunk of the bar off when stopped for the night and melt it into your canteen cup of hot water for a flavorful hot chocolate boost

You should try mixing tuna salad with the pasta Roni Alfredo pouch eating it cold it's so delicious and add a drink mix and fruit snack and granola bar! That's a full MRE

Good food options IMO; you showed some good products that a lot of "everyday" people tend to walk past: because of cost, & whom at home needs a single use PB&J packet? ...However on the trail, these options are fantastic

Old school. Take one jar of peanut butter and one jar of chocolate protein powder. Dip your spoon in the peanut butter, then in the protein powder. It'll keep you on those cold patrols.

I use flapjacks a lot in the Winter. Lots of sugar and fat content. Not at all healthy food but a big calorie load and easy to carry cut into cubes.

Great tips PA. As a 20 year Marine, I didn't think of tortillas until a Comapny Commnader turned me on to them. Fit in a cargo pocket perfectly and can't get crushed. I also loved fig newtons, which I called Combat Cookies. They weigh a bit, but they avoid crushing and crumbling, and have lots of calories and fiber. Thanks for the video.

What do you mean pogey bait? It’s what we Grunts called food we brought other than C-Rations or MRE. On patrol we have a time to eat. We set up security while others eat then rotate security so they can eat. We usually had hot A’s in the morning and evening with field rations for lunch. If we didn’t have hot A’s we ate the field rations of C’s or later MRE’s any pogey bait was a plus. If I were going to do any type of zombie apocalypse patrolling. I will get surplus MRE’s with some pogey bait for snacks.

I build my own MRE's I have taught this to a group, with great success, each having more than 2000 calories for a day, and nothing needs to be heated to eat, all good calories.

My dad was a scout sniper on Saipan and Tinian. He ssid they only carried chocolate bars for energy when they spent long periods, days and weeks, doing reconnaissance behind Japanese lines.

You want energy? A good chocolate brownie, one with real chocolate and nuts, maybe a bit of added coffee. I used to do door to door selling and after HOURS on my feet I'd sit down at home with a cuppa tea and one of the brownies that I hadn't sold. No pick me up like it.
