Learn how to engrave glass on a diode laser engraver in 3 minutes. Diode lasers can engrave glass because glass doesn't absorb the laser beam, so we need another way to go at it.
No extra tools are required - no air brush, no air compressor, just point.
* Gouache or tempera paint is a water-based paint that is safe for kids - different countries give it different names*

I found it much easier to just use flat black spray paint. Clean the glass, spray the paint evenly, and away you go.

Sounds like a good idea. I figured it would be hard to remove the paint since the spray paints I know are not water-washable. What paint do you use? Would you need two layers in that case as well? From my experience, a thin layer of paint doesn't have enough meat for the laser to burn, so it doesn't engrave the glass as well. That's why I'm using two layers

@nixmakes the paint I use is barbecue/grill paint, one well done layer worked great. Wipe down with acetone after and it cleans right up!

@@CrisAnderson27 Nice, my workshop is inside the house (we live in the city), so I didn't want to use spray or chemicals, but my laser enclosure is practically a fume hood, so maybe I'll try it in there. Thanks for the comments :) Glad to learn something new!

@@CrisAnderson27that paint is typically flat black and high temperature right? I have some flat black, semi-gloss black, and semi gloss grey. All are rated for 1200 degrees (I'm assuming 1200F). I imagine flat black is best since it would absorb the most energy

@@nixmakes I use just the cheapest flat black spay from walmart. takes a few coats to get it thick enough to engrave but does a great job quickly. and easy to scrape off with a razor.

Hey how did you add the camera to the d1?

Hi, I'm using Lightburn to control my laser. The camera is actually connected to my laptop, not the D1, and Lightburn controls both. Lightburn let's you calibrate and use any USB camera (and other connections too). Wide-angle cameras are best because they can capture all of the workspace at once (I bought one from AliExpress for $17 and it works great). Lightburn has a great toturial on how to pick the right camera, and how to connect, align and calibrate it. I hope my answer helps, but if not, feel free to contact me via my website. Nir

We call it Guache paint here. It's basically a kids-safe, water based paint that washes easily. Hope it helps!

It’s called spray paint… why the hell would you do all this? 😂
@nixmakes
@nixmakes 2 месяца назад
For several reasons. Mostly because you can't spray paint inside the house. By the way, this takes like 10 seconds per glass and is easier to clean compared to spray paint. The only difference is that you have to plan ahead :) Spray paint is also a great option. Thanks for stopping by :)
