Still wearing a hoodie in Red Deer...brrr. The heat can show up anytime now. Pretty sure I saw a tomato plant pick up it's leaves and walk back into my greenhouse LoL.
My tomatoes have been requesting to speak to the manager for weeks now! They are Not impressed. P.S. I am huddled under a blanket in front of a heater on the 26 of June!
Hi Ashley. Thanks for this video. Yes. Please show the solar powered drip system with links for the parts you used. I badly need a solar powered system instruction video to simplify watering for my growing situation. 😊❤.
I love how simple your set up is! ❤Yes please do a video on the solar powered one. Any information about irrigation is helpful. Like you, all that gallons-per-minute/regulator nonsense intimidates me too. 😟
Also, if you’re thrifty, you can actually skip the end cap at the end of the run and just fold the hose over to kink it. Then tape or tie with string/ twist tie etc to make the kink stay. This also works for a standard pressurized system. 👍
@@GardeningInCanada I’ve never tried drip tape myself, only the round hose style. But ya, the “regulators” they sell for these drip setups are really just a fitting with a small hole to slow the water speed and thus the pressure since the water can’t rush into the hose as fast. I feel like there’s some caveats on how to use them for them to work as intended. But of course no information is provided. They might be more effective on a drip zone with many emitters so there’s enough water exiting the system to reduce the pressure. Like if the water can enter faster than it can leave, then pressure will build up and the emitters will be the ones holding the pressure (the bottle neck would be emitters) but if there’s lots of emitters, there’s plenty of ways for the water to exit and then the regulator would be holding the pressure before the drip system (the bottle neck would be the regulator and the water would have plenty of opportunities to escape from the emitters) Sorry that’s long 😂
I remembered this in a reply to a comment, but think it's helpful enough to post it here for the people. "They make this rainwater eaves-trough downspout diverter that's easy to slip inside a downspout. It attaches to a garden hose several feet above ground, inside the downspout. Run the garden hose to a large container in the garden. If you have to raise the hose over the edge (height) of the storage container, keep the open end below the end that's up in the downspout, and natural flow will fill the garden container. One can also siphon water from the rain barrels at the house to the garden, if there is a small height difference. Perhaps raise the rain barrels.
I have two IBC totes on the top of my hill and was just not getting more than a drop at a time, so I bought a cheap pump on Amazon for $70 and now the pressure is better than my house hose😂
drip Irrigation is such a game changer, I went with a much smaller gravity fed system for my small raised garden beds from Lee Valley "Big Drippa" - essentially it is a big bag you hang on the fence but it works great for what I need. Ever since using these in my tomato beds I never get blossom end rot. Nailing your watering game is a game changer.
I was thinking of setting up a gravity fed water system a few years ago with 5 gal buckets, never did it. Instead, I picked up a retractable hose reel, absolutely love it. Stay Well!!!
Hey Ashley, so wonderful to hear that I’m not the only person who is still (at the end of June) wearing a “Bunnyhug” oh ya, I said “Bunnyhug” I will always be a Saskatchewan girl at heart ❤..love your channel and the information you provide! Keep up the great work, D.
I used to install sprinkler systems for private and commercial clients. I even have an existing system at the house my wife and I bought...but we don't use it. We have revamped the layout of our yard and, of course, created a garden. I can renovate the existing sprinklers to water the garden and new lawn areas, but I prefer to water the garden manually, as it gets me physically in the garden to see if there are any changes or problems. It's a labor of love I suppose, but my garden is not that big and we are out in the backyard, under our tent everyday enjoying it every day. Now I did buy some 50 gallon plastic barrels, in order to create a rainwater catch system, which will water our gardens and beds. Maybe I'll install the same gravity-fed system. Thanks for sharing this Ashley.
Ashley, If the Lee Valley kit is anything like the Schmidt kit from Dollarama, there is a regulator, of sorts, under the screen. It is a plastic disc about the size of a quarter with a 1/8"ish hole in the middle to reduce flow...
Just my general input, any time something seems big and complicated, you can just split it up into smaller parts to understand and actually do, in smaller time frames. I kinda want a system that detects moisture levels all over and waters based on that. sounds fun. But if I didn't need to manually water there are definitely times I wouldn't even look at garden for a week lol.
Thanks for sharing; you’re a genius! I wonder if a person could use old garden hose pieces (I have lots of them). Next, my hubby will have to put spigots in 3 of our self-made rain barrels!
Love it. Since 2016 I've been growing tomatoes on my flat roof. Last year I expanded to my neighbour's attached flat roof (with their consent of course). We have 20 x 5 gallon Alaska grow buckets that are watered by a subterranean, gravity fed system.
How funny, I last weekend visited CT to get parts to revamp my homemade gravity fed waterier. When I say home made it is a milk jug with a 3/8'' hose that is pinched on the end to produce the drip feed amount I want, or think I want. The Mater plant like the idea last year (35lbs of fruit harvested from one plant) so this year trying to build a better valve or drip adjuster for it. Hopefully! The pinching idea was hit or miss depending on the water level. Anyways thanks for posting this it is a great idea that anyone can do and feel good about.
@@elisabetk2595 No, but the jug is behind the porch post and I know from which direction the wind comes from and the post protects it. I try not to keep it empty to help in keeping it stable too. The only issue so far was I guess because the jug let sunlight through elegy will form and change the drip flow if said elegy gets into the drip line.
Love it Ashley. … We are going to put in one as well. Thanks for the video. … I think for tomato’s, not using the emitters was a smart thing. Tomatoes should get a deep watering once or twice a week, instead of a steady or regular watering daily (from what I have read) .
I made a system from amazon parts and it is a game changer. I used a 25psi reducer and shut off valves and I do 22 raised beds with 3 emitters in each bed. I can do 4 beds at once and I love it.
My raised beds are only 67" x 34". It depended on the lumber that was available. Check out " living traditions homestead " handsfree watering. Gamechanger for me. Very easy system.
wow, gotta love that. We have a bunch of 85 gallon water barrels..no way I can get those up off ground....Now Im wondering about placing 5 gallon buckets next to a garden space...raise them up...outfit them so I can attach a drip hose and setup like yours..maybe try and use water barrel water to keep buckets filled up.Hmmm...wonder what that would look like
Does this remain on constantly, unattended? Or do you need to be there in person to run it for the appropriate time? I'm an avid user of drip tape w/regulator on a timer (8 psi I think). But when I go away for even a weekend I turn off the city water valve. Drip tape and flax straw mulch saved my life for the last few years. While neighbors all around me were losing half the water to the wind and the other half to the pathways, I was quietly watering under the mulch. Warman here.
I wish my rain barrels were closer to my garden so I could set up something like this, but alas, they are more than twenty feet away. So, I'm carrying and hoofing water to my garden if necessary. Right now, Kingston, ON, has been getting a lot of rain, so it's not an issue. The weather here has been hot and wet!! I have zucchini taking over my Herb garden. The seeds were in the compost that I used. And for temperature, it gets hot and humid here!
you can go a further distance, use a larger pipe for the section between the house and the rain barrel, like 1" would be ideal. also raising the rain barrel up a little higher can help.
They make this rainwater eaves-trough downspout diverter that's easy to slip inside a downspout. It attaches to a garden hose several feet above ground, inside the downspout. sump pump? Say the water is pumped out via a hose end? Say the hose manages to reach your desired location? Just a thought. I bet a big box store would have something. After all, what do you do if your basement floods? Wait for the waters to recede? I'd look hard at what people use to remove excess water from homes. Then, it's all about adapting it for your needs. I bet we could even find some way to power it via solar panels. Please note, you're pump would need to be powerful enough to force water into the hose and run through to the end that is kinked over. therefore, think small diameter hosing. I wouldn't look at anything greater than 3/4inch. I'd probably use the irrigation 1/2 inch tubing. I have drip irrigation + a fertilizer input. I couldn't bother to manually do that fertilization. I used a venturi injector. Oh bliss. All I have to do is make a 5 gallon solution, run the system and walk away.
Hi Ashley, just looked at weather network and it’s going to go down to 9 celsius overnight Thu-Fri in Ottawa. What impact might this have on the garden? Yes please! to a video on the solar watering system.
My favorite garden advisor!!! I have blossoms on my bell pepper and tomato plants. Should I bolster the N, Ca, Mg P, K with coffee grounds, calcium acetate, epsom salts, and bone meal?? The Ca and Mg, I can do through foliar sprays. Bone meal as a foliar dust? A couple bell peppers are about 2.5 inches long! Along with consistent watering, what else should I be doing? This is the most success I've had with peppers ever!
@@GardeningInCanada Thank you ma'am, you're the best! I love to fiddle with things but since you said not to add stuff, now I'll have to pull weeds, ugh. :). LOL. Keep up the great work!
What is the blue screw thing on the half inch tubing, then is the filter? I have landscape clips and the black water container. Then i need a drill to make holes to add quarter inch short tubing to each plant?
Hey Ashley, would love a video on whether we should be using rain water from a house to irrigate veggies. Heard it was dangerous due to runoff chemicals from shingles and potential bird disease? Any help would be great. Bought rain barrels and not sure if I should use them. Thanks
Still works ok when the barrel is close to empty?? I read that you really need 5 feet minimum height, so nice to see that this works, although I wonder if it works well because the bed is so close by.
Can I use Borax in planters to discourage ants? Thank you for this video! I bought two big plastic thingys in metal cages to use to store water in the garden. I have yet to put it together, but I bought a drip irrigation kit off Temu, no regulator, I think. Hi from Cold and Wet Manitoba
I never understood why people didnt try studf like this. Even just hooking up a garden hose to some PVC pipes with holes so the water can drip. If youre crafty enough to make it into a grid or something that overlaps your entire raised bed. Buy one of those cheap faucet timers... Boom! Semi Automated watering system
How do you make sure the plants at the end of the hose gets watered as much as the ones at the start? This has been my problem so I gave up. Wet at the front, dry at the back. 👀
The height of your holding tank and the water level alone will influence the speed of water flow. Play with that and you have yourself a primitive flow regulator.
Just be sure to use hose clamps with them if you're using them on anything other than a gravity system, or you'll have a mess. Learned that the hard way 😂
You say almost free, but what about the water reservoir? Particularly I need a cheap gravity solution that I can leave unattended at the community garden. We aren't allowed to water unattended from the tap.
Fig experts, I’m starting to see a discoloration of new leaves in my potted plants. I’ve been fertilizing every 3 weeks or so with a mix of organic and synthetic fertilizer. And I have been watering regularly. Can anyone tell me what the cause could be?
Maybe someone can help me.. I have an artesian well and it’s free flowing. So my thoughts was get a fitting and put a water hose on it and lay it over in my garden. Well that don’t work!! The water will go almost to the end of a 50 foot hose, but it will not come out the other end so my question ,what can I do to get more water flowing or to get the water that is flowing to come out of a garden hose?
The pressure drop through the hose is higher than the water pressure at it's inlet. You can try a larger diameter hose but the flow rate will be minimal at best.
You need a solar pump with enough lift to fill a barrel several feet above grade and then run the hose from your barrel. I wish I could remember the guy that did that on his yt channel but its been years ago.
I just can’t do it because watering my garden is the most enjoyable part and it keep you on the ball self watering makes you lazy just me I guess. Growing soil less is a totally different story
