For anyone who is just joining from this video, he once made a suggestion to go to a stone shop (one that sells stone tops for counters and such) and ask for a waste piece from a sink insert. After getting over the social anxiety of asking for something for free, I went and the people at my local shop were very nice and gave me a very nice quarts slab (about 10inx15inx3in). It fits perfectly on our crafting table at home and has made a world of difference for tooling.

@carolbaker2773
@carolbaker2773 4 года назад
Copper sheets are not too expensive. It would be interesting if the belt dies that he uses to make his scales would be able to cut copper. If so then maybe you can finish your project still using the metal copper scales!

Now what would be cool is some keeled scales for a bit more texture and break up the nice smooth look of the rest of the armor. Maybe even a bit of a darker color underneath each scale. It does look super cool though and it really makes me want to get into leather crafting!
@bjornsworkshop9288
@bjornsworkshop9288 4 года назад
Heck yeah you can make the scales as simple or involved as you like! You could even go as far as fully tooling each individual scale with vinework or flowers or other textural elements! It would take AAAAAAGES, but the end result would be truly incredible

How thick leather should I use for scales? 9-10 pound?
@Treetimedragons
@Treetimedragons 2 года назад
Does scale size have a effect on defense of the armour? Say smaller scales providing more tension for a comfy fit? Or larger scales having more ability to take hits? Totally new to the whole experience and trying to design scale vambraces while I dive down the rabbit hole lol.

@@Rkurnelm yeah, rivets can be a hair tricky, but snaps are the bane of my existence, I cant for the LIFE of me get one to set right
@Rkurnelm
@Rkurnelm 4 года назад
@@ewill3435 I know where I'm screwing up on rivets, I'm trying to use rivets that are too tall, or more accurately WAS trying to, I've recently changed that up and they've been doing A LOT better. As for snaps. I can feel you there, getting the center post to roll over properly can be annoying. My holster for example, I have to redo the snap on it because while the button snap is fine, the connector snap has broken loose because the center post didn't roll enough. Think it was due to my setter being the wrong size on the nipple. Also found that using a piece of granite as my pounding surface helps on all my hardware settings. Went to a local countertop place where I live and picked up a scrap of Granite 24" x 12" x 1" for between 15 and 20 bucks. Did that about a year ago, haven't looked back since.
@ewill3435
@ewill3435 4 года назад
@@Rkurnelm to be honest, I haven't tried making anything that uses a snap since I set up on my workbench (I used to do my leather work on my dorm room desk), but I've got a a hip pouch idea that I want to try out that'll need a snap, so here's hoping the workbench pulls through for me

@jarekmace1536

I would consider buying a pair of the punches and welding the trailing edges together, cutting most of the handles off, and making a piece to fit this into a press. It would make creating tons of these very quick.
@bjornsworkshop9288
@bjornsworkshop9288 4 года назад
Weaver makes custom dies for clicker presses and could easily make something like what you are talking about. They could probably even make one clicker die that would punch multiple scales. Definitely a good call if you foresee yourself making a huge number of scales

@@bjornsworkshop9288 sorry for the late follow-up. Numerous scales? I plan to make a version of this to cover my rear, in addition to the front. I used to fight heavy stick in the SCA, and I hated getting hit on the tailbone.

I cut mine out with sheers so I don't have a perfectly smooth edge on each scale. Should I use an edge beveler to round them out ?
@bjornsworkshop9288
@bjornsworkshop9288 4 года назад
The level of finish you put on each scale is 100% up to you. If you want to edge bevel and burnish each scale you absolutely can, and it will look incredible! It will also take a bazillion hours to get done with the project. If you've got the time for it and are willing to put it towards the scales, you'll end up with something truly stunning! You can also tool each individual scale for texture. Imagine how impressive a vest of scales each tooled with a small flower or symbol would be! Legendary level equipment!

hey man this is probably but i thought id ask just in case. im wanting to make the fantasy suit youve been making (with templates of course as im really new) and was wondering roughly how far a full hide would go towards it? (im a little below average height, medium build) i realise this is a really broad question just wondered if you may be able to give me some direction.
@bjornsworkshop9288
@bjornsworkshop9288 4 года назад
It's a really hard question to answer just because there are so many variables, but a full hide (most veg tan are sold as sides, so two sides = 1 full hide) should get you most of the way there if you are willing to play some jenga with the pieces and are careful how you place things. That said, it may take significantly more or a bit less depending on how you scale things and if you are or are not willing to use less prime bits of leather like the bellies and neck of the hide.

The foxit reader has mangled some of the curves of my breastplate pattern. Don't know why, think it was a scaling issue or something. Some curves were fine, some got flattened out, and where this happened the lines no longer matched up at all. Used a different pdf reader and it didn't happen. Thought I'd put it out there.

Do you scale your armor for Napoleon or Henry VIII? I mean, small or x-large? How do you scale to fit a different kind of body?
@bjornsworkshop9288
@bjornsworkshop9288 4 года назад
Generally the best way to ensure a proper fit is to print as is, then modify from there via either scaling or extending a given panel in a particular direction. Because everyone is a different size/shape, it's not always as simple as "scale up 50%" or "scale down 20%". Cardboard/card stock/paper mockups to make modifications are pretty much essential to ensure proper fitment.
