This is the EASIEST way to Sand Hardwood Floors! Using an Orbital sander to refinish Hardwood Floors- EASY DIY Floor Sanding
We're refinishing all of the floors in the new house- Can we finish Sanding all of the Hardwood Floors in 2 Days? We used an Orbital Hardwood Floor Sander- Home Renovations Episode 1
🏠 Subscribe to support future videos 🏠
It's week one in the house and we're starting off with a bang! We have 2 weeks before we need to move out of the apartment, so we decided it would be the perfect time to refinish the hardwood floors!
We're always up for a project and figuring out how to do things ourselves, but we were also intimidated by stories of people really screwing up their floors and having to spend a ton of money to fix it. Luckily our floor was very even and only had a few deep blemishes to work out, so we decided to go with the orbital hardwood floor sander to help limit our risk.
We took advantage of the weekend rate from the rental company and only paid about $55 for the sander, but that meant we only had 2 days to complete allllll all of the floor sanding and keep the project on track.
We had some very long nights and a little broken glass, but we did it!
Things to note if you're planning to do this project:
- Be sure to price out your sandpaper. It was the most expensive part of the project.
- Buy more sandpaper then you need and plan to return extra
- Change the sandpaper often especially the heavy grits. It makes the job go so much faster and you will actually get the finish you are working towards!
- I would also plan on 1 sanding pad per room. Changing the sanding pad really helped the sander run smooth and it was harder for me to use as that wore down.
- Go for this type of sander if you can! It was so much less intimidating and gave us a lot of control over the project!
GOOD LUCK!

If people just knew drum sanders are not even close to as scarry as professionals make it seem. Just watch a good video on how to stop on every pass which is the hardest part.

This is great, thank you. It is VERY hard to find tradespeople these days, and I don't think the drum sander is something to trifle with since you can seriously damage your floors. I was thinking of using a random orbital sander, but I'll try one of these!

@hardwoodstudio5833

Yeah, you could take a week and you wouldn't get the finish off with that sander. Those types or sanders and buffers are finish sander. They are what you use to smooth out the actual sanders scratches. Don't stain it. Because all that will do is point all half the floor still has finish on it. If you want it too look even half way good, just put polyurethane oil based. Because that That seals to most finishes. I could have had the whole floor done for you in a weekend by myself and I'm not even the best floor guy so you should have called someone in your area.

Awesome work. Question - did that sander get into the edges of the room or did you have to use a palm sander or edge sander ?
@LauraOnTheMove
@LauraOnTheMove 6 месяцев назад
We had to use a palm sander. We just used a basic on from the hardware store and sand paper with the same grits as the large sander

did you guys completely took out the bevelled edge when you sanded ? I have similar floor, thinking to get rid of bevelled edge and make it smooth like one board, is this possible ?

No, it still has texture. Im not sure how you could do that…
@jamesmariani

If you were to do it again, would you use a Drum Sander, or stay with the Square Buff?
@LauraOnTheMove
@LauraOnTheMove 7 месяцев назад
I think I would stay with the square machine for this job. Our floor was just worn and the finish was thin and old. I think if I was working on a floor that had a solid finish or if it was painted then I would use the drum sander, but the square one just feels less risky to make an uneven floor!
@mrtrik71
@mrtrik71 Год назад
I am going to use the same sander but the sanding pads are two sided no adhesive is that weird normal or what? Lol I’m lost.
@LauraOnTheMove
@LauraOnTheMove Год назад
They probably are not two sided. We had some that were rough on one side to go against the pad then the sandpaper side had the actual grit. The back had the number printed on it and you don’t want to use that side agains the floor. Good luck!!

It is great to see your video, I live in western Kentucky, my contractor has someone came giving us an estimate for our( 2 bedroom, living room, dining room ) for $4650, I think we are going to try to do our self after watching your video, would you please give me the name of sander hopefully I can find at my local hardware store. Thanks in advance!
@LauraOnTheMove
@LauraOnTheMove 7 месяцев назад
Great that you're going to try it yourslef! I am not sure on the name of the sander. Our local rental just had the square sander and we went with their option. They also sold the sandpaper and pads when we rented. Have fun!
@danh4527

I hate drum ssnders. It's hard to rent one that is configured right and it is very very easy to destroy your floor. I use a diamond blade paint/finish removal attachment on a metal grinder and carefully float it across the floor. It quickly removes finish and the circular swirls can be removed with the large orbital sander method in this video. To flatten the floor I put down a flashlight in a dark room to look for high spots to level and step on the sander if I need more removal.
@LauraOnTheMove

The flashlight is a cool idea! Thanks!!

Why did you decide to tell them less of square footage when renting? You mention not wanting them to know how much you were planning to get done. Just curious as to why, did they attempt to charge you per sq ft of use? Most are done on a daily/hourly rate, plus materials. But even if you were to buy 7 pads and only need 4, as long as they are not used or damaged, they'd likely allow them to be returned
@LauraOnTheMove
@LauraOnTheMove 7 месяцев назад
I forgot I even mentioned it! I just didn't want them to tell me that was too much to get done in one weekend. They only had 2 pads in the shop, so unfortunately we would have needed to find more either way. Based on the conversation I had with them I didn't think it would wear out as fast.

@LauraOnTheMove oohhh! Gotcha, that makes sense! I'm not sure where yall live, but wondered if they did things differently there as far as how they rent equipment. So, you guys just sanded and didn't strip first, correct? I'm wondering if I'd be able to get away with that in my living room.
@LauraOnTheMove
@LauraOnTheMove 10 месяцев назад
We did, but I used a very heavy grit to sand off the old finish. The old finish was very worn. There were a few spots that showed bare wood and the remainder was very thin. If we were taking off a fresh refinish it would have been very hard to just sand it off.

I''m so glad to hear that it's working for you. In my years of experience, urethane needs a very clean surface to bond to. All that dark stuff in the softer part of the grain is dirt, and various other contaminants. Poly does not like that. Anyway, I'm happy for you two. Andy @@LauraOnTheMove
