Awesome way to use up comfrey! Absolutely a win win plant to have in the garden. If you save some roots & small to medium size leaves (before flowering), chop them up into small pieces & dry it, you can make your own salve/ ointment for many ailments, including arthritis, gout, skin problems like eczema, etc. I make the salve for arthritis. Many people love it around. So easy to grow the plant & make the salve. Plus use it for the chop & drop method in the garden. Extra bonus. If you let it flower the bees, hover flies & other beneficial insects will go totally mad about it! They'll be very grateful ♥ Nature is simply the best ♥ Thank you Dan for another great video!
Just came across your channel. Binge watching. Can't stop even though I have to get up early for work. Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge and experience!
I had help planting 8 fruit trees early March in zone 6a. Didn’t know about comfrey so now I do. Ordered some to plant near the trees around the first of May. Hope it works!
good video! I was just out doing the same thing in my garden this afternoon. I can never get enough nitrogen builders and dynamic accumulators growing as well as good compost. I've been amazed at how many folks are still not aware of these plants. Glad you're doing a good job of getting the word out and thanks for the info on the Ceanothus--that's a new one for me to check into.
No, I just find it brakes down a lot faster when frozen. My worms are in a cool spot anyway... I put the odd bit of kangaroo and guinea pig manure in, as well as cardboard. But comfrey is their main food.
What month did you harvest and drop that comfrey? Also, when this growing season is/was over - did you further prune your tree down to a short height? If so, how short? Do you do that for apple, cherry, and pear as well? Thanks! Love your channel!
I bought a few plants the other day. do your Comfrey plants have hairs that poke a little if you handle without gloves? in the video your Comfrey does not look hairy.
I live in a park and my 3 yr peach tree is in a very large black tub tree pot. Can I plant comfrey direct in the tub with the tree? Also after summer/fall can I top tree to shorten and how much, the tree is about 7ft tall ? Can I use comfrey fertilizer on all flower beds?????
Interesting video! I was doubting if chop and drop works with wood chip mulched garden since from what I know you shouldn’t mix the chips with the soil but just put it on top. So I thought I might mix up everything too much if you just drop on top instead of putting everything under the chips which would be a lot of work every time
Your welcome Tony! The Comfrey plant has a deep taproot that "mines" nutrients from deep in the soil where other plants roots cannot reach. So rather than taking nutrient from one area and placing then in another area, it takes from a place that would otherwise be untapped. Thanks for watching...Cheers!
04:40 I don't think it's the nitrogen, I think it are the bacteria feeding on the green material which are cleaning up after the fungi that are feeding on the woodchips, increasing the fungi's metabolism.
woah you cut that bareroot plant at half its size. Can you link the video to that? Im curious as to how that works? Also is the ceanothus plant invasive?
Jadam fertilizer put the comfrey in a bucket put a scoop of forest compost (it is under the leaves) empty with rain waterand let it for 7- 14 days Comfrey tea for free dilute 1 tea for 10 water
