How to Make your own Wine from Store Bought Grape Juice at Home using Bread Yeast! Yes, you can make wine at home with bread yeast. Can you use other yeasts? Sure, but they won't work the same in this exact recipe! It's science.
No, this is not "inmate wine" or "prison wine" or Pruno or anything close to that. This is just a basic red wine that anyone can brew at home. Before you start thinking this is any less "real wine" than others... what is wine made from? Grape juice, skins, yeast, water and sometimes added sugar. Take the skins out, it's white wine. Sure, ours will be red because the juice makers add dye (even though it's not in the ingredients!), but in the end, it's the same process as the big time wineries. Concord Grape isn't the most commonly used varietal for wine, but there are some that use it, and this wine tastes a lot like those brands, Manischewitz comes to mind. The flavors are fruity, sweet and light. A friend described it as "Grape juice with alcohol", and she loves it.
We made a page all about what GEAR you need for Brewing, have a look: www.city-stead...
Using Aldi grape juice and bread yeast with some plain white sugar, watch Brian show you how to make the wine his friends call, "the best wine I've ever had". No kidding.
It comes out sweet, not dry, and it's ready to drink in just a couple of weeks! You gotta try this one.

I was inspired by this video, so I bought some airlocks and a cheap jug of apple juice. I had some redstar bread yeast from a couple years back when I was gonna attempt this but never did. However I got excited hearing people supportive of this way of making wine instead of all the wine snobs saying it's "junk" if not done their way. I was shocked how fast the yeast started to make the air lock bubble which was about 10-15 mins after I pitched it. I however did use some wine nutrients a day after it started to bubble which turned my air lock in to a geyser. Then proceeded to burn through sugar in 4 days including the first. It's still the 4th day and I'm drinking it and I'm shocked just how strong it is. Thanks for the inspiration.

When I brewed from Grape Juice I made my own airlocks. My setup was fermenting in 2-liter pop bottles from store brand pop, which also made sports water bottles with tops with compatible threads. Anyway, the locks were those sports tops with plastic tubing glued in placed onto the pop bottles and the other end went into the water bottles. Simple but it worked.

@pjad20
@pjad20 4 года назад
I might be a little late (where I am, the lockdown is still going and I'm still brewing) but you can use the plastic bottle that the juice comes in to brew in. Or any plastic bottle/jar that is food safe. Food safe ones don't allow oxygen to get in and hence are safe to brew. Yes, glass is ideal but good safe plastic bottles work really well. (Best ones are bigger soda/coka cola bottles or water gallons). Plus you don't have to sterilize when you brew in the juice bottles because inside it already is a sterile environmental.

@@CitySteadingBrews one thing i have not figure out is how you know the potential of alcohol content
@CitySteadingBrews
@CitySteadingBrews 6 лет назад
We have a video coming out about that actually. But, you add up all your sugars and there's formulas to help. White sugar is about .046 gravity per pound per gallon of must. Honey is about .035 gravity per pound per gallon of must. You add whatever you've put in together, add for the fruit or whatever juice you used, and you get an approximate starting gravity. Using a hydrometer, you can verify that. Then, you figure out where you want or think the fermentation will stop. Subtract that gravity from your starting gravity and multiply the result by 131.25. BAM... ABV%.

I really like your videos! I just started fermenting with a ginger bug. It might only be slightly, but your OG is slightly less because you added a small quantity of juice after your initial reading. But who cares if it's good and you like it. Cheers!
@CitySteadingBrews
@CitySteadingBrews 5 лет назад
But! the reading was lower than actual due to temperature differences, so... I'd say in the end, the slight dilution and the lowered reading even out. But yep, you're right.

I just tried this for the first time. Two quick questions: 1- can I adjust the final sweetness by cutting back on the initial sugar, and by how much? 2- Do recommend degassing, or will the Co2 “work” itself out?
@CitySteadingBrews
@CitySteadingBrews 5 лет назад
That's four questions but..... :) Yes you can adjust the final sweetness with less sugar. So you want enough sugar to hit yeast tolerance but not go past your preferred sweetness level. I like 1.030 for this wine, but say you wanted more like a 1.010, you just remove about half a pound of sugar from the recipe. You don't have to degas if you don't want to, but it takes a month or two to work itself out.

Keep yeast in the fridge. As for shelf life... normally there's a use by date on the package. I've gone a few months and they were fine, and had others that were dead in a month.

Hi CS brews! Does this recipe work with honey instead of sugar for a cheap and easy pyment? Would it be as drinkable young as this is or would a mead require more ageing? You guys got me into homebrewing over a year ago and I love everything you do. Thanks!

Have you ever tried making the same recipe but with different sugars to see what the taste diffrence is? example Basic white sugar or Domino Golden Sugar vs Sugar In The Raw, powdered sugar, brown sugar light and dark
@CitySteadingBrews
@CitySteadingBrews 2 года назад
Basic white and powdered are the same thing, some powdered has corn starch so I'd avoid that. Brown sugar has molasses added, and would take longer to age to taste good, and sugar in the raw is more like white once fermented really, but it's between white and brown sugar.

I made this recipe with exact same juice and new yeast last Monday (8 days ago ) and I'm barely getting any bubbles in my airlock since day one. Room temp is around 65 °f . I didn't have a hydrometer to test sg. Is this normal ? When should I rack off lees ?
@DemonMage
@DemonMage 6 лет назад
Q: why is a two pack of airlocks $5, while a four pack is $17 and a six pack $22? That is some crazy scaling on pricing. Usually it goes down when you buy more... right? I could buy four 2 packs and save $2. Very odd.

Having sorbate means it might not ferment. You can try, but it's no guarantee. As for OG reading... either is fine so long as it's right as you're making it, don't wait a day then take a reading.

Tonight I decided to combine this recipe with wine tannin, and yeast nutrient. I did it in a 6.5 gallon bucket and ended up adding WAAAYYYYY too much sugar.
