Great pattern and this could also be used for placemats as well. I would suggest anyone using a plaid or strip fabric for the backing to make sure that you place the top & bind true to the lines/plaid, so your back doesn’t look wonky. One could also use a decorative stitch and/or utility stitch for the quilting.

I purchased the 50 weight and the 28 weight threads for piecing and quilting (as you suggested). I am getting ready to make this table runner, and I just wondered if I should also use these AURIFILL threads and corresponding weights in the bobbin. I really like the AURIFILL thread because I see less puckering in my work, but it is a little expensive and just wondered about the bobbin thread. Thanks. And thank you for all of your hard work in organizing such well-thought-out tutorials, Kimberly. Pat aBerne

Quilt as You Go was my first attempt at quilting and I LOVED it. It's my absolute favorite method of quilting because it's so much easier for me to manage on my home machine, especially for the bigger quilts. Recently I've been combining traditional block piecing and the Quilt as You Go method together and I love the results I'm getting. There can never be too many FQS Quilting videos, especially for Quilt as You Go...more more more Quilt as You Go! :-)

For those asking why she didnt sew the back on. If she had cut the strips to the exact length she wouldn't need to cut excess strips. She also could have left the backing and fold the edges over to auto bind it. At least it's what i would have done.

This is great for newbies and I also love to watch for any tips. Just a comment tho: I like to spray baste as it saves time and you don't have to fuss with pins. I tried that 505 only once - Nasty stuff (smelly, hard to reposition, sticks to your hands, ugh!). June Taylor makes a good one with no smell and don't need much. It is however expensive so I only buy 1/2 price on sale. Found a less expensive one on Amazon.ca called SprayNBond - no smell and works almost as well. Kim at Chatterboxquilts.com has a recipe to make starch that is great and she says can use it for basting as well. (I make 3 batches at a time which fills 2 1/2 x 32 oz bottles and spray the back of material and let dry, then iron) but still have to try to use it for basting on a table runner first)!

I think this isn’t really QAYG. I’ve made quite a few of placemats and some table runners with QAYG before but the point of QAYG is you don’t need to quilt like you did here. It’s a one step process. You put the backing fabric and quilt as you attach a piece of fabric in the initial process. By the time you are done you have backing attached, a quilt insert sandwiched then the top is pieced together. Most QAYG FO doesn’t also have stitch showing in the front. And it’s a nice smooth top without much of stitches showing. I do like to use spay glue (405) on the back a night before to let that dry then I can just quilt all in one process next day. Once I launder them they’re nice and plushy.

Maybe I don't understand -- if you are going to quilt the entire thing once the backing is added, what was the point of quilting the top to the batting as you pieced it the first place? What does this method accomplish that traditional "piece than sandwich and quilt" method doesn't? Either way, I have to put the whole thing through my machine. I thought the main advantage of quilt as you go was to either save time, or avoid having to wrestle a full quilt through your machine. The method presented here requires putting the whole thing through the machine TWICE. I don't get it. Also, as picky as it may seem, diction is important -- Kimberly continually says "sHtraigt" and sHtrip". There is no "h" in strip or straight.
